To think Clubcard prices causes a negative view of Tesco?

I went in to do a shop, realised I left my clubcard at home but thought I'd be able to find it on my grocery app, or mobile banking.

No, couldn't access it anywhere so instead of doing my top up shop there, probably around £60 I walked out and went to Aldi.

It left me with a negative view of Tesco and certainly less likely to just pop in after a day out at the beach etc when I don't bring my handbag, loads of regular items were 25-30% more expensive without my Clubcard.

Those at Tescos must think it encourages loyalty, it doesn't for me, anyone else?

I will literally not buy things I need if I’ve forgotten my Clubcard. It’s really annoying and yes I agree I have formed a negative view of Tesco because of it.

Mennex · 27/07/2022 18:46

You don't need the Tesco app on your phone to use your clubcard. I don't have the tesco app on my phone. Or any supermarket or store loyalty app. I have them all (and my bank cards) in Google Pay.

So I have 3 apps for shopping on my phone, Google Pay and trolley.co.uk and Amazon.

Nintendotime · 27/07/2022 18:46

It's obviously working as a business model because Asda has introduced a loyalty scheme for the very same purpose. And other shops are doing the same thing.

If you don't like it, you can take your business elsewhere.

I used to love Tesco. I don't know what has happened in the last decade but every tesco close to me (no exaggeration there are about four) just seems really run down and smells of sweage. The club card prices aren't that good compared to Asda and they never seem to have much choice of products. The big one isn't 24 hour anymore and after 7pm you can't get around for the cages and staff restocking.

HappyAsASandboy · 27/07/2022 18:49

I don't think it encourages loyalty. It makes it very obvious that I am selling my data for a price.

Pixie2015 · 27/07/2022 18:52

This is main reason I choose not to shop at Tesco - even though I have a club card on my key ring just incase - it’s to catch out teens and people who pop in on off chance - it is the bottom of my supermarket list!

LoopyLoo1991 · 27/07/2022 18:55

App is incredibly slow or just plain work in some areas due to signal issues. BF's sister did a big shop with him at Xmas (he's particularly disabled & is unable to drive a vehicle) as nice gesture & to get him a practical item. Neither of their apps worked, many other peoples weren't either. Meltdown rage by many at (condescending) customer service desk.

Both mine & his will sometimes not work at local express - often at late night with only security there to man self service checkouts. No proper staff to help.
Warn out card readers at many self service checkouts & manned tills mean multiple swipes with tesco card. This leads to poor cashiers having to type in long card number.

Tesco staff vs their management are a very 'them & us' culture & their is a toxic environment in many, many stores (had personal experience of this with a previous workplace, as they were contracted to some Tesco sights).
Barring the odd card needing multiple swipes, never had any of these probs at Sainsbury. And staff there aren't sullen grumps either.

But why is that a bad thing? Everyone knows that, what is the problem? Not being funny, I genuinely dont know why this is an issue

Redburnett · 27/07/2022 18:56

I agree with OP. Especially when you need a Clubcard to benefit from a saving that is actually paid for my the brand.
So often we do not want 3 for the price of two or whatever, we just want one at a sensible price., and go elsewhere. Being retired we have plenty of time to shop around. My DH is now refusing to go to Tesco at all after the latest incident.

You Don't Need The App To Use Your Clubcard When Paying To Get The Discounts. There Are Many Ways Of Doing It That Do Not Involve The Tesco App.

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 27/07/2022 18:58

In all other industries it’s illegal to make people pay to have privacy on thier personal data.

But you can use the app!

phishy · 27/07/2022 18:59

OP, your should have posted saying 'AIBU to be a Luddite?'

Literally everyone who shops there has the app. Instead of educating yourself after a one-off mistake, you have taken umbrage.

And GASP - this will really blow your mind - I have Tesco Pay, so I don't need a separate Clubcard or Credit Card - it's a two for one app!

SouthOfFrance · 27/07/2022 18:59

If you forget your club card then just keep the receipt- you have 2 weeks to then go to customer services to put the points on your card and then get the money back.

bubblesbubbles11 · 27/07/2022 19:00

I don't shop at tesco. Is it true that with the clubcard your shop is going to be cheaper than other supermarkets?

They're. It making you spike pay, they're reducing the cost to people that do!

Mennex · 27/07/2022 19:00

Of course. But you don't have to. Which is what many of the people on this thread are complaining about, for some weird reason. They have literally made it possible for you to use every conceivable method of registering a string of numbers against your shopping. You could memorise the numbers and shout them at the checkout operator, failing all technological methods.

boatahoy · 27/07/2022 19:01

It does put me off using Tesco if I do t have my club card. They must make money from doing this or they wouldn't do it but it just doesn't sit right with me for some reason. Why not treat all your customers fairly?

Siepie · 27/07/2022 19:02

I have the keyfob. You also have the option of app or adding it to Apple wallet / Google pay.

there is loads of research that says negative reactions last longer and are more likely to be shared than positive ones

True, but if somebody shared their negative reaction to this, I'd just wonder why they thought Tesco were responsible for reminding them to bring their purse (or phone or keys) when they go shopping. I don't think it reflects badly on Tesco.

hesttreat · 27/07/2022 19:02

That should say

They're not making you pay!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 27/07/2022 19:02

I did similar the other day OP. The Tesco Club are app logged me out for some reason and I could t get back in because there’s no 4G access in our local Tesco! So left and went to Asda.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 27/07/2022 19:04

DH adores the club card prices! He has been known to sit at home with the paper till printout and add up the savings with glee. I’m happy, because I need him to get the stuff out of the trolley into the car and them the house, so if he is motivated…
we don’t buy many packaged groceries, but the club card offers on fruit and veg are excellent. When we lived in France, both Leclerc and Carrefour had the same system, so we are used to it. It tends to reflect seasonality and availability, which is good in itself.

Apparently Clubcard is also very good on razor blades as well, so he can’t be the only man who is interested.

Floralnomad · 27/07/2022 19:05

I always use scan and shop so have to have a clubcard or the app anyway but clubcard prices don’t bother me in the slightest

Pumperthepumper · 27/07/2022 19:05

You’re being so unreasonable, the clubcard is easily the most generous reward scheme. It’s easy to access, points build quickly and you never have to pay full price at Pizza Express. Just take a photo of your card!

Pumperthepumper · 27/07/2022 19:06

Although Tesco now ask for £7 for peak delivery, which is fucking outrageous IMO.
