They're like bird sized insects to me that make me want to gag. Is that just me or does anyone else hate them and see them this way ?

I don't mind dragon flies but cannot stand daddy long legs or spiders or beetles. Also like Ladybirds, don't see nearly as many as when I was a kid.

Sometimes in May (not sure if this is an annual event or not) hundreds of massive dragonflies fly south over my mum's house, it's amazing. Usually some hang around for a while under the house. This one is almost as big as my hand.

I like them at a distance. A big distance. Butterflies are fine, I can happily pick up a butterfly and put it outside. Can't really judge them for disgusting bodies, mines pretty ugly too!

CounsellorTroi · 27/07/2022 22:26

I love them. Here is a picture I took in Croatia recently.

Swimming in a river with dragonflies darting around is a true joy.

I once did some supply at a Special Needs School and someone came rushing in to tell us that some dragonflies were hatching so we went out and spent the rest of the time until lunch watching them dry out. It was magical. And I was paid to be there, best day's work ever!

I’d actually die

Passthecake30 · 27/07/2022 22:46

One flew into the kitchen while I was working yesterday, it was massive. Boy did I scream until I had managed to get it out…

Yorkshirebred · 27/07/2022 22:54

Nope and you have obviously never seen a hummingbird hawk moth - spectacular!

crispinglovershighkick · 27/07/2022 23:17

pedro I quite like them but it can be startling to have one fly at you

malificent7 · 27/07/2022 23:34

They are beautiful.

They’re so very scary! In my defence, I don’t like anything that flies or crawls about🤢

Regularsizedrudy · 28/07/2022 04:50

I used to like them I think because it was so rare to see one. Then I went to a dragon fly garden and there was 100s of them and loads of them were having sex (I think that’s what they were doing anyway!) it was repulsive!

ChagSameachDoreen · 28/07/2022 06:24

They're vile.

Banana7 · 28/07/2022 06:49

I think they're beautiful. Like fairies dancing above shimmering lakes...

User952539 · 28/07/2022 07:05

We have a particularly territorial one at the moment. As soon as the newbies have dried off their wings and lifted into the air for the first time he/she divebombs them. If the dog stands at the edge of the pond he/she torments him by darting towards him and then moving back out into the middle of the pond so that Ddog can’t get him. Ddog is a bit stupid (and way too pretty to get wet) plus our pond is quite large so this can go on for some time.. The dragonfly is definitely the brainier of the two.

Viviennemary · 28/07/2022 07:11

I hate insects they give me the creeps. Certainly dont think dragon flies are the horriblest ones. But not sure I have ever even seen one live

TroysMammy · 28/07/2022 07:20

I dislike moths. Why does a creature attracted to light only come out at night?

TroysMammy · 28/07/2022 07:21

@Regularsizedrudy 😂

Rewis · 28/07/2022 07:23

I'm a bit creeper out by dragonflys and butterflies

MeanderingGently · 28/07/2022 07:26

Such beautiful creatures, why on earth would anyone think they were 'disgusting'? Ditto moths....

Human beings have become so far removed from the natural world that now we think nature's beauties are disgusting. No wonder we are ruining our planet with litter, pollution, buildings, climate change.....and seemingly don't care enough about it.

Very, very sad.....

CulturePigeon · 28/07/2022 07:38

I think they are beautiful and fascinating. They remind me of tiny helicopters.

They make me think of prehistoric times - I think they've changed little for millions of years, except, as a PP said, they were once much bigger. I enjoy the slight frisson I get when one appears because they're special - you don't encounter them every day.

StripesSpots · 28/07/2022 16:12

Do you find cockroaches ‘beautiful’? Just wondering how far your love for all of God’s creatures extends…. 😜

MeanderingGently · 28/07/2022 16:44

Well, to be honest, I'm never sure why everyone gets upset over cockroaches, I don't find them repulsive, although obviously I don't want them in the kitchen. Same with mice really, they're rather sweet little creatures but I'd rather they weren't chewing through my cereal packets in the cupboard.

However, I will concede that spiders aren't my favourite, I do find it harder to think of them as "sweet". So I suppose some people see dragonflies in the same way.

But I still wonder if it's because human beings have become so disconnected with nature that we have such aversions/phobias about the natural world?

Evening, Ladies! Don't mind me...

The blue ones are damselflies

Dragonflies have got four wings, I think.

This moth is hilarious.

I thought he was very cute Grin
