They're like bird sized insects to me that make me want to gag. Is that just me or does anyone else hate them and see them this way ?

I think they are beautiful but they do take me by surprise if they come close as they are so big and striking.

darisdet · 26/07/2022 23:12

They are beautiful and their life cycle is interesting. We see them in large numbers on one of our country walks in August every year.

darisdet · 26/07/2022 23:16

Favourite of mine are the death's head moth. We get those in the garden July/August. Also the cinnabar striped caterpillars and moths on our walks.

YourWinter · 26/07/2022 23:18

Dragonflies are glorious, stunningly beautiful creatures!

GarlicBread4Life · 26/07/2022 23:18

Insects are repulsive. I will coexist with them begrudgingly, but in no way do I think they are beautiful.

Saz12 · 26/07/2022 23:26

Apparently they’re the devils knitting needles, flittering in the air making shrouds.

Costacoffeeplease · 26/07/2022 23:30

Grown adults have this response to harmless creatures 🙄

We had one of these in our kitchen last week

Adult insects are often beautiful and only like it for a short time. Their larvae tends to be more alien and so different to the adult form. Look up ladybird and dragonfly larvae as an example.

personally I find insects fascinating and we most definitely need them. They became land creatures long before our evolutionary line did and are the reason flowers evolved.

Nooo. They're incredibly beautiful.

Agree. Slugs are disgusting. Not beautiful shimmering dragonflies.

Chillingly poetic!

Dragonflies are some of the most beautiful creatures on our plants. Watching them 'hawk' around a catch their pray is one of natures wonders and a pure joy to witness. Its a scene that hasnt changed for millions of years.

I love all insects and we should all be doing everything we can to encourage and protect them. We should also be teaching children there is nothing to fear from them(in the UK) and just because they are small doesnt mean they are not important.

We can not survive without them

I'm so pleased I get joy from insects. There isn't much joy in the world anymore so being able to smile when I see a bumble bee,a ladybird or a intricate spiders web is clearly lucky.

YANBU.

One landed on me yesterday, and I was rather put off by it's revoltingly-large eyes. On mammals large eyes are cute. On insects, not so much.

As an aside, I only found out yesterday that jellyfish are only floating jellies for one part of their life cycle. They spend a good deal of time anchored to the sea bed in a polyp stage. I'm 42 and had never heard of this. 😦

FastFood · 27/07/2022 05:13

Im terrified by dragonflies 😳

Qwertysfine2 · 27/07/2022 05:32

In my conservatory the other day I found the tiniest Dragonfly ever , about an inch long in all , it was amazing . The little ones are called Marmoselles or something, can't remember .
After the initial shock of seeing your first ever Dragonfly, you see that they are a thing of great beauty .

They're also absolutely disgusting. They're bodies are so gross.

They’re not disgusting Hmm

Fair enough you have a phobia but the way you talk about such beautiful creatures is nauseating.

Dragonflies also help keep us safe by eating harmful organisms such as mosquito larvae. So a dragonfly contributes to our eco system whilst you are are destroying it, OP.

GreenLushSun · 27/07/2022 07:25

Overall though, I think they're rather beautiful.

BluOcty · 27/07/2022 07:29

Gosh really? They are stunning creatures. A total pleasure to watch and enjoy them.

I'm not too fond of some insects like earwigs tbf but realise that humanity cannot survive without insects.

Dragonflies are mostly big (with the hawkers and emperors the biggest, the darters the smallest). They have much smaller cousins, called damselflies, which are dainty and fluttery rather than powerful and zoomy - though both dragons and damsels are hunters that prey on other insects. The biggest and most colourful of the damselflies are the demoiselles. These two are Beautiful Demoiselles - my favourite UK species of insect. I think they are just stunning. The male is the dark blue one - sadly I couldn't get a pic of the male doing the wing-flicking thing that the (green) female is doing.

Evening, Ladies! Don't mind me...

That's a damselfly.

I love dragonflies and agree that they're magical like hares and kingfishers. I hate crane flies because they come at you with their clattering legs.

TheLadyofShalott1 · 27/07/2022 07:37

HippeePrincess · 26/07/2022 20:41

I think they look magical, like fairies should ride on them!

Me too! I think myself incredibly lucky if I get to see any - but unfortunately I am yet to find one with a fairy riding on it's back...

TheLadyofShalott1 · 27/07/2022 07:41

LightDrizzle · 26/07/2022 20:54

They join hares and kingfishers in the magical creatures category for me!

Me too!

AlwaysLatte · 27/07/2022 07:51

They're beautiful (to me) but I can understand people being nervous of them as they are quite big!

andi62 · 27/07/2022 08:10

Nope, here's one in my porch, last year
