They're like bird sized insects to me that make me want to gag. Is that just me or does anyone else hate them and see them this way ?

Love them - like tiny bejewelled planes! But my cat used to be petrified of them and hide under the table if she saw them.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 26/07/2022 21:24

They are beautiful and live for a few weeks. Often they die of starvation. Have a ❤️.

Tougherpolicies · 26/07/2022 21:24

I think they look magical, like fairies should ride on them!

Oh me too!! Love the clatter of their wings

Zilla1 · 26/07/2022 21:27

Regarding spiders, it turned out not to be a true spider but there was a fossil arachnid originally thought to be a spider with a body length of 1 foot and an individual leg length of 18" so an overall size spread of 4 foot.

megletthesecond · 26/07/2022 21:27

They're wonderful. They always look busy.

Theluggage15 · 26/07/2022 21:29

They’re stunning with their shimmering wings.

No but butterflies have the same affect on me 🤢

This
Me too.
I have had a phobia of moths and butterflies for as long as I can remember. But I actually don't mind dragon flies or damsel flies.

Akite · 26/07/2022 21:32

We have a very large pond and multitudes of dragonflies visit every day, it's wonderful! They are fascinating creatures, did you know they metamorphose just like caterpillars/butterflies? Dragonfly nymphs are pretty gross looking. But they leave the shel of the nymph behind when they become dragonflies and we end up with empty casings on leaves around the pond.
they are also one of the best hunters in the natural world. Can't remember the exact statistic but something like 90% of their hunts are successful which is streets ahead of most other hunters.
I'm endlessly fascinated by the natural world, I love it.

DelilahBucket · 26/07/2022 21:33

Bird sized?! The only bird remotely comparable in size to a dragonfly is a baby one!
They are fantastic creatures and I could watch them for hours. Don't understand how anyone could dislike them, I mean seriously, what are they going to do to you? If you are going to hate on insects at least dislike the evil ones that have the potential to severely injure you like the Giant Asian Hornet. Fortunately it isn't a likeable climate for them in the UK.

Happymum12345 · 26/07/2022 21:37

I love them!

tootiredtoocare · 26/07/2022 21:38

Depends how big they are! I was utterly terrified by one that came into a pub we were sitting in in Wales, it was about 6 inches long. However, we live in the north near a pond and the biggest we get are around 2 inches. Beautiful blue/green or red/purple.

DigitalGoat · 26/07/2022 21:42

I feel like the word 'disgusting' is massively overused

tallwivglasses · 26/07/2022 21:43

I saw a couple having a mid-flight shag a while back. It made my day.

GlumyGloomer · 26/07/2022 21:54

I would definitely be freaked out if one flew at me, but I virtually never encounter dragonflies. I'm here for the crane fly hate, I utterly loathe them. One slithered down my face about 20 years ago and I still feel grossed out thinking about it

PaperMonster · 26/07/2022 22:01

They are absolutely beautiful.

WonderingWanda · 26/07/2022 22:03

They are beautiful and not at all gross!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 26/07/2022 22:03

Never seen one in Scotland. Have only ever seen them at my dad’s in Wales

Smartiepants79 · 26/07/2022 22:05

They’re astonishingly beautiful and their flight abilities are unmatched.
They are an extraordinary feat of engineering and evolution.

mrsjackrussell · 26/07/2022 22:07

I think they are beautiful but can understand if you have a phobia.
I took this photo of a really cute moth on my window last year. Nature is fascinating.

Pedallleur · 26/07/2022 22:08

Just lovely and even better they have no interest in biting or feeding off you.

CockSpadget · 26/07/2022 22:09

I love them, as I do most insects and creepy crawlers. Earwigs, Millipedes and centipedes however put the fear of god into me. Awful awful creatures.

Staters · 26/07/2022 22:54

My 4yr old DD screamed when getting out of the car today. I ran over and said what’s wrong and she pointed and said I giant dragonfly mummy, it’s not a pretty one like you showed me on the videos.
We’d been showing her videos of them at the wknd saying we’d go see if we could find some at the nearby country park. We didn’t see any, but then she found this poor thing. Not sure what’s wrong with it, it’s wings twitch and so did it’s tail but is still there hours later on our driveway.
No water close by, there is a wooded area at the back of our house and it has been raining a lot over the last few days so maybe a small pond has formed 🤷🏼‍♀️
