They're like bird sized insects to me that make me want to gag. Is that just me or does anyone else hate them and see them this way ?

They eat mosquitoes. That's enough for me to love them til the end of time

Found another pic!

I love them but am still a bit freaked out at their bodies up close. I came across one in the jungle in Costa Rica that was around 20cm across - had no idea they could get that big!

am now thinking about all the other giant insects I saw out there - I remember cuddling a rhinoceros beetle which was about the size of a rat..

My favourite dragonfly moment, I was the Mother of Dragonflies on this day

Wow, @User952539, that's lovely. Deeply envious!

This was beauty that got stuck in our kitchen last summer - a Golden-ringed Dragonfly I believe. The wings are so intricate!

You do realise that without insects life on earth would cease? How utterly bizarre to hate the things that keep everything in the biosphere functioning.

Yes I do realise that Hmm.

Do you realise that people have likes and dislikes and phobias even that might not be entirely rational? And that regardless of rationality or not, it has no impact at all on the function of the biosphere?

Imaginary · 27/07/2022 13:22

I think dragonflies are beautiful!

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 27/07/2022 13:30

They don't bother me , although I wish they'd learn to avoid being caught by my cat !

I have an irrational fear of Ladybirds though

Whodoiwanttobe · 27/07/2022 13:32

Nope! They’re lovely

User952539 · 27/07/2022 13:44

This one was newly emerged a few weeks ago. We watched him shed and then fly onto the window to dry his wings

I love dragonflies, beautiful. In a different way, I am in awe of these

Honestly op they are beautiful. I’m sat at the edge of my pond next to a clump of irises. There five who have crawled up the stems and are about to emerge. One has just emerged. It’s sitting on top of its old empty body drying out it’s wings. It’s double the length of its old body. It really is fascinating watching them

mogsrus · 27/07/2022 13:59

Beautiful creatures as everything is in the world in some form,

2bazookas · 27/07/2022 14:21

The other day we went to one of those charity "Open Gardens". Lovely garden. Smashing afternoon tea. Great fundraiser for their charity. What will I remember for the rest of my life?

The pond.

We and a crowd of visitors stood around the pond, mesmerised, watching ugly-bug monster dragonfly larvae slowly crawl out of the water, up the stems of reeds into the air and sun, and hatch out into glorious aviators. Unfold tiny crumpled wings to expand and dry them. Leaving their previous skeleton empty behind them. Utterly spell binding.

Yes, that's a female Golden-ringed ❤

They are stunning - so are butterflies. There is a butterfly farm near us - it's mostly screaming children, who are scared of the butterflies, so I don't think you are alone OP!

My most horrible insect experience was in a jungle hotel in Sri Lanka - masses of insects everywhere, crawling all over the windows (attracted to the light), giant, thread waisted wasps and huge millipedes/centipedes. Another time, we drove through a spider's web on safari in South Africa and the (massive) spider was on my son's head - I would have screamed my head off if it was on me - but he is terrified of caterpillars, which don't bother me at all.

You do realise that your body is covered with over a million tiny mites that live on your skin?

Can I just loop back to this and say, excuse the fuck me? You what? No. What? No. Pardon. I can't.

pedropony76 · 27/07/2022 21:38

Every insect is disgusting to me.

A HUGE orange butterfly flew past the buggy and I started screaming like an actual idiot. I literally left DS in the buggy and ran away😭 I just can’t cope with insects at all.

A couple months ago there was a BEETLE stuck on my buggy. I had to get my neighbour to take it off and I genuinely don’t know what I would have done if she wasn’t indoors

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/07/2022 21:39

No I love them!

lollipoprainbow · 27/07/2022 21:41

I find your post gross and disgusting to be honest. You might not like butterflies and dragonflies but to call them gross and disgusting is very childish.
