EU border entry requirements because of Brexit - need to prove you have £85 per day to spend

cakeorwine · 25/07/2022 17:52

In theory of course.

EU Border staff such as in Spain, can ask to check that you have enough spending money, a return ticket / onward ticket as well as all the passport checks ensuring it's in date, valid during your time in the EU and that you haven't been in the EU too long.

I guess they aren't doing this in full - but they have the right to. It's what we should be doing at UK immigration. Just so we know that people coming here can stay and aren't trying to sneak in for work.

This is what being a 3rd country out of the EU means. Before hand, at ferry ports, we were waved through or a brief scan. Potentially these checks will be time consuming.

And if the EU or any country in the EU wishes to make a point, this is what they can do.

No, I'm not French.

notimagain · 27/07/2022 16:21

@Festoonlights

Many French people told us they wish France would find the balls to leave the EU - the fact they are more eurosceptic than us is always glossed over on MN. The very reason Macron et al are always trying to make brexit as painful as possible in their own small way has everything to do with trying to convince the French people not to follow suit!!!!

Yeah sure..(that's my initial very polite response).

My take on it, as somebody who actually lives in the country ,is there's slight tendency to be Eurosceptical at times, yep, but with massive variations, both in terms of the regions and demography...You have to look reasonably hard to find significant numbers as consistently eurosceptical as many seem to be in the UK.

As has been mentioned upthread Mr Macron has won two presidentials with a vaguely pre-EU policy, and even darling M Le Pen has in recent years had to row back on the idea of Frexit in order to appeal to the more centre ground voters.

No, I'm not French.

But you are a remainer, which you also hate.

I hate the French as well, also the Germans.
Nothing I have seen since then has changed my mind, I still have the French, the Germans and (....) remainers.

Don't hate yourself. It's not healthy. 💐

I am not sure why you think I am a remainer?

At the start of the referendum campaign I was ready to vote to leave the EU, but could not bring myself to vote the same way as the assorted bigots, racists and generally hate filled leaders of the Leave campaign.

In completely unrelated news, does anyone watch Rosie Holt on Twitter. It's quite amusing when people comment angrily under her videos when she usually acts as an MP

I have been to Spain three times this year and not once did anyone ask questions about this - the biggest pain was the covid certificates and kids PCRs etc and they didn’t even look at them and couldn’t care less!
Portugal was effortless last summer.
France ditto last autumn
No problems at all in Italy for the ski season
It seems if you really really look for problems unless you are actively making them up as the French did at the weekend there is no difference at all !!!

It says alot to me about Brexit, that the fall out has been so minimal people are now reduced to creating problems just to justify their mistaken claims that the world would end when we left the EU. It hasn’t. It won’t, and it was a good call as you will see in the next eighteen months.

Have you actually read the eurozone financial forecasts? Look at Italy in particular very closely and even the most die hard remoaner will wobble. 2008 with whistles springs to mind. It is worrying that so many seem so oblivious to
the real problems.

Just because they haven't done it yet, doesn't mean they won't in the future. And just becasue they didn't ask you doesn't mean they aren't asking others.

If your media and politicians keep doing things like blaming the French for Dover cock-ups, I think you'll find there will be a lot more checks done on British travellers. After all, the UK is already doing it to EU citizens....

BunsyGirl · 27/07/2022 18:09

@hatedbythedailymail22 well the Spanish don’t have the staff to question 18 million British tourists. In fact, they have the same staffing problems that are causing problems across Europe (the continent that is, including the U.K.). That’s why they are loosening restrictions on foreign workers.

I have just come back from mainland Spain Mallorca and France.

I didn't see any supermarket empty shelves, staff shortages in hospitality etc i could also get any amount of parts for our bicycles, cheaper and more availability than UK.
One thing is most import agencies are based in the Single Market, they supply that first and UK importers second now.

The part i needed for car (VW) is on back order in the UK, off the shelf in France.

One reason and this applies to me, is i can draw down on my pension long before i am 67, so when i lost my job after furlough, thats exactly what i did and so have '000s of others, i don't have to work now.

Speaking to my various friends in Europe, it doesn't appear to be a widespread thing other countries allow.

BunsyGirl · 27/07/2022 18:29

@Alexandra2001 that may be your experience but there are definitely issues with staffing. Google it and you will see that Spain has relaxed restrictions on foreign workers. I’m not making it up! And supermarket shelves have nothing to do with staff so I’m not sure the point you are trying to make (other than the usual Britain is crap etc etc). I work for an international company and the questions come up at every quarterly global meeting. Staffing and inflation are the most popular subjects across the group…

At least people can mostly get to the EU with less paperwork than goods can

I didn't, i said it easy to be whatever you want in a SM exchange, applies equally to me or anyone else, inc you.

BunsyGirl · 27/07/2022 20:16

@Alexandra2001 your were referring to another thread that I had commented on and implying that I was lying because I couldn’t possibly be a trainee solicitor working on PFI contracts nearly 20 years ago and working for an international company now. Completely below the belt and shows the kind of person that you are.

And no-one is saying they have any intent to question 18 million tourists. But they can and will question whichever of those tourists they want to, and it could be you.

One day there will be a thread on mumsnet from someone denied entry because they couldn't prove one or more of these conditions.

And who will care?
It's exactly the same now as going to the USA or India or anywhere else.
Meet their conditions of entry or be prepared to be sent home (even if it is unlikely)

BunsyGirl · 28/07/2022 06:56

@hatedbythedailymail22 Don’t worry, DH and I have got about £80k available credit on our credit cards between us. I am sure we will survive the interrogation 😊

arrogantorwhat37 · 28/07/2022 07:34

If I ruled the world, I would apply a £5000 per day minimum requirement to anyone who voted to leave the EU!

This is something EU countries can decide for themselves (because sovereignty) but yes, Leavers will probably whinge about it. It seems to be their default setting.

And yet it’s ALWAYS Remainers starting these endless Brexit posts.

Oh regret will get plenty if people wittering sbiut how unfair it is and how they are shocked and it's the EU "punishing" us. How many threads have there been about getting caught out with needing time to expiry?
