To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

The Tory membership is 90% over 50 and white and they are likely to vote Truss, which thankfully will hand the next GE to Labour on a plate, hooray.

Don't be ridiculous Blossomtoes, if you are unable to distinguish between personal views and civic responsibility there is no hope for you

Oh the irony.

I agree.

If, by some miracle, it does go to multimillionaire Mr Sunak then he will have a hard job persuading the electorate that higher taxes, wage cuts and soaring inflation (whilst he’s protected from those harsh realities) is the way forward.

Labour must be rubbing their hands at the prospect of facing Truss and Sunak across the House.

DonnaHadDee · 22/07/2022 08:41

I've become very cynical about politics over the years. I live in NI, and people (in my largely Unionist community) are really hoping for a Truss win. In fact a Truss win, and narrow Conservative majority in the next election is the ideal ticket for most influence. She's anti-EU, does not have a good relationship with Irish government, etc.

On a personal level I'd prefer Sunak's, mostly for not on rushing in to tax cuts and increasing debt.

Also, for reference I was very anti-Brexit for work related reasons, it's totally destroyed my DHs business.

bevelino · 22/07/2022 10:09

Sunak’s cynical plan to cut taxes just prior to the next election to help the Tory’s win has spectacularly backfired.

And, no way on earth will I vote for Liz Truss. FFS, I am a fairly loyal Tory. If JRM or Nadine are mooted as Cabinet members, then I would totally withdraw any engagement.

I would assume that Truss has already promised them both cabinet roles since they suddenly came out in favour of her as an awful double act, saying shes "more Brexity than we are". They wouldn't offer that endorsement for nothing.

Anyway it won't be long before Nadine is off to the Lords if the rumours are true. Years of being up Boris's backside loyal will shortly result in our esteemed I'm a Celeb contestant becoming a Peer of the realm. Heaven help us all.

It's interesting isn't it. If the largely white old men in the SE who make up the Tory membership only think of themselves we will get Truss. If they think strategically about winning the next GE they'll see the opinion polls say most of the general electorate prefer Sunak and go for him.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 10:39

They’re all Johnson apologists. These people stick together.

Hoppinggreen · 22/07/2022 10:43

The Daily Mail is very firmly behind Truss, which may be racism (although they dont much like women either) or because they know she will be in their pocket.
Sunak is an idiot (Will from inbetweeners) but one thing about his vast wealth means that he wont be asking for a treehouse or wallpaper in return for influence in The Commons.

No, he'll just be giving influence to whoever his Father in Law tells him too instead.

Having to choose Sunak or Truss for leader of the country is like have to choose Josef Mengele or Harold Shipman as your GP. Either way you're fucked, it's just about how painful it will be.

Softplayhooray · 22/07/2022 11:34

Liz Truss is David Brent in a skirt. Far more chance of her routinely embarrassing herself and losing the next election for the Tories if she is chosen, so I hope it's her! What a shambles.

the80sweregreat · 22/07/2022 14:44

Bit unfair to David Brent , at least he was funny !

Kidsaretryingtodestroyme · 22/07/2022 15:06

For those who believe Truss is a friend to women.

Truss is a walking recession. She wants to make unfunded tax cuts which will likely triple or quadruple interest rates. People will lose their homes, many companies will go under and tens of thousands of people if not more will lose their jobs. She is completely inept, ideological and has zero grasp of economics. She also thinks that way to growth is to slash employment rights etc.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/liz-trusss-tax-cuts-equal-higher-interest-rates-admits-her-economic-guru-pgv57p5jz

We are headed for a nasty recession either way. And I am not a fan of Sunak and disagree completely with his political views also. But he at least has a tiny bit of common sense and some understanding of economics so will at least try to mitigate what's coming to some extent, rather than deliberately make it worse. Not because he cares about people, but because he cares about his reputation.

Truss is now the ERG's puppet. That Rees-Mogg was her most ardent backer tells you everything you need to know. She also looks disturbingly like Lady Penelope, I am always looking for the strings on camera.

She would be an unmitigated disaster as PM. Sadly though, I suspect the Conservative Party membership will put her in office.

The poor will be blamed for being poor. Those with large mortgages will be blamed for taking them out even though the Government actively encouraged them to do so through various schemes. It will all be someone else's fault, as usual.

I read that Times article yesterday morning, so hoping for a Sunak victory. Not a party member, therefore no vote. However, if we have the same Labour candidate at the next GE, I shall lend him my vote.

I prefer Sunak too but it seems Truss is ahead in polling, which is surprising imo

If sunak gets it, will his DC have to go to a state school? I bet that was never in their plans!!

Why would they? It’s not part of the job description.

Blossomtoes
Isn't it like saying that he thinks state schools aren't good enough?

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 18:30

I doubt many politicians send their kids to state schools, let alone one worth £730 million.

“At least she/they know what a woman is” seems like scant consolation if they use that knowledge against women.

Err, that's exactly what he's done. Did you miss it? He's increased the NIC thresholds so millions of lower paid people pay less (if any) NIC. He's also shaken the magic money forest to give handouts of hundreds of pounds to lots of people who don't actually need it (electricity/rates handouts), rather than directed support to the worst affected. Those two things alone will add billions to our national debt! And worse still, a lot of the beneficiaries didn't actually need the money!

MarshaBradyo · 22/07/2022 17:51

Not really. There are over 3 million self employed/freelancers/casual workers who were screwed by Sunak when he illogically and unfairly excluded them from the covid support schemes. A lot of those would have been natural Tory voters who are now very unlikely to vote for Sunak as they won't forget the way he abandoned them!

SheeplessAndCounting · 22/07/2022 20:23

I prefer Sunak too but it seems Truss is ahead in polling, which is surprising imo

Not really. The Conservative Party membership are 0.3% of the population, made up of the most right-wing people in the country (given most moderate members cancelled their membership in 2016 when moderate "one nation" Tory MPs were expelled from the party.

In addition, most of them are well off and a large proportion own their homes outright and are retired, so this clusterfuck will have marginal impact on them. They would probably be happy for interest rates to reach 7% so they get more interest on their savings even if it means other people lose their homes/ jobs/ starve/ freeze.
