To ask...Truss or Sunak?

It's no surprise that these two are on the final ticket.

I assume Truss will win, which means there'll probably be another leadership election in about a year. She's already announced that she'll 'hit the ground on day one.' The word 'running' would have really helped there.

I think she would be a gift for Labour - Rishi is a far better candidate, despite being an entirely imperfect one.

Whaddyall think?

Tony Blair in 1997 won with Labour with a majority of 413 seat

His majority was 179. No political party will ever reach those dizzy heights again. My dream is a Labour/Lib Dem coalition. The LDs are doing well in the south. If only Clegg had gone the other way in 2010, how different it would have been …

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 21/07/2022 11:08

If the Tories want to win the next election, we will get sunak.

If they want to lose, we will get truss.

We will find out soon which way they are betting.

Penrythejanitor · 21/07/2022 11:23

How come Sunak is ' Rishi' on here to many, but Truss is Truss? . Bit Weird.

Anyway, Sunak isn't a complete idiot - he's a nasty tax doging, out of touch , Johnson enabler , but Truss IS a complete idiot and a liar - she has been routinely caught out and dismantled on her pathetic post brexit trade deals by the infinitely more capable Emily Thornberry and Yvette Cooper..and the other day she quite literally couldn't find her way out of a small brightly lit room with one exit.

I think the final two have been manipulated to get the right wing press patsy - Sunak - as PM , but it looks like the Tory party members are more insane that previously assumed, and they will vote for Liz Truss as Prime Minister.

Two years and counting until the country has the opportunity to restore some sort of sanity.

RockandRollsuicide · 21/07/2022 11:31

I can't warm to either, sunak seems rather fake and yes a little smarmy to me.

We are facing a desperate crisis and to be honest I think both should do a month living each week in different income families to really see where and how people are budgeting and cutting back.

If they came here they would see I expect a middle to low income, no hairdresser for absolutely years, definitely no acrutments like nails... fripperies, new clothes, shoes worn till they fall off, nearly every house hold furniture items sourced for free, every penny each month pinned down and accounted for....no....we have several hundred pounds a month for us...to spend on ourselves..

There is some slack in our budget for new energy bills, reducing or taking away our entire Xmas fund/bday fund/ and so on.

Then they need to see a family who can't afford to put money by for anything and then someone on disability benefits etc.

On here, Liz = the Queen.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 21/07/2022 11:53

Ooooh, two thirds for SUNAK. Interesting! 😮

Dotjones · 21/07/2022 12:08

I hope Truss, because I know less about her than Sunak. I mean, everything I know about either of them is negative, but knowing more about Sunak means there are more negatives on his side.

I hate the idea that someone as wealthy as Sunak could be PM. I was against Corbyn partly because he was so wealthy, same with Starmer. Why is it that we only get the super rich as leaders? Johnson is closer to "normal" levels of net worth than Starmer, Corbyn and Sunak. Truss is poor in comparison but is still worth around a million. I'd like to see someone who actually has experience of living a normal life in charge.

perenniallymessy · 21/07/2022 12:19

Part of me wants Truss to win as that is hopefully handing the next GE to Labour on a silver platter.

BUT, I'm also terrified of how much (irrepairable) damage she will do to the country until that happens, so on balance I would prefer Sunak. He at least seems intelligent and reasonably competent. Plus I suspect he might appoint a more moderate cabinet, whilst Truss will fill it full of the likes of Rees Mogg and Dorries.

Sorry, is Starmer super rich? Genuine question. I didn’t think he was but happy to stand corrected if you have the info on that.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/07/2022 12:26

I don't think Starmer is super rich @Dotjones. Is he not from a lower middle class family?

Actually don’t worry I’ve just Googled it myself. So yeah he’s got a few million.

Devpatelslaughingeyes · 20/07/2022 19:02

We’re fucked either way. It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion.

Yep. Never thought I'd yearn for the days of John Major...

ajandjjmum · 21/07/2022 12:34

Allywill · 20/07/2022 20:36

It’s a bit like this years mens singles final. I want both of them to lose.

You weren't the only one! Grin

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2022 12:35

That makes three of us.

lightand · 21/07/2022 12:40

Truss

But as a Remainer who now thinks Brexit, not exactly even backing herself, is she?

RockinHorseShit · 21/07/2022 12:42

Neither, but between the 2, Sunak, but only because he sensibly rang & asked Martin Lewis for advice about recent financial policy, that gives me very minimal hope he's better than BoJo etc. But we really need an election

Tigofigo · 21/07/2022 12:43

Liz Truss is awful.

As for Sunak: His policies, lack of empathy, history as a hedge fund manager, political back stabbing and dubious tax avoidance aside, how anyone could watch this video and then vote for him is beyond me. He's just such a... I can't even think of the word. Dweeb? It's straight out of The Thick Of It.

HolidayPleeease · 21/07/2022 12:51

Hate both their domestic policies, but think that at least Sunak would be better on the international stage. For example, I think he'd be a better diplomat and better at working with the EU and the US / and on the NI border issue - less combative than Truss. She is very "Boris" in her style - very insular-minded Britain is best etc, whereas Sunak seems more cosmopolitan and I don't think he'd piss as many people off on the world stage.

ajandjjmum · 21/07/2022 12:51

Have no respect for Sunak who totally disregarded several million of us (entrepreneurs/small business owners) during the pandemic, and gave us no help whatsoever. Our business has closed as a result. At the same time he allowed those who have no scruples (and I know some of them) to take out loans that will never be repaid, or to receive support whilst they still had plenty of work.

I don't know much about Liz Truss, but as she says herself, she is not a good presenter, which is an issue. I did love her response when Rishi tried to catch her out for changing her stance during the debate. She showed that she could be feisty and answered (I thought) very well.

HolidayPleeease · 21/07/2022 12:54

Also re Starmer, are we now discounting people because they've earned their own money doing a worthwhile career? Starmer isn't from a wealthy background (nor is Sunak in fact - middle class and parents paid for private school but not bags of family wealth like Boris). Starmer earned a fair bit as a human rights lawyer on some landmark cases. Fair enough isn't it?

This. People lost their businesses, some lost their homes and sadly some could see no other way but to take their lives. The man has blood on his hands. I don't know how many of the 3 million excluded previously voted Tory but come the next GE they will be lining up to vote for anyone but.

It's bloody depressing that out of a population of 67 million this is best on offer.

I agree with most of this but how many middle class parents without wealth can afford £45k a year in school fees? Clearly Sunak’s upbringing was far more privileged than the norm.

fizzywat · 21/07/2022 13:01

The calibre of the remaining two candidates for leader of the Cons and PM of our country is just abysmal. Out of a population of 60 odd million people, this is the choice?

Anyway, I wonder if Continuity Liz (if she wins) will appoint Johnson to any great Ministerial Office, and if so which one? He could still be a very dangerous man in the wings, and will probably run things for the new puppet anyway.

Mousemat25 · 21/07/2022 13:02

Sunak didn’t support all during lockdown just some. Liz only got into the last two when the dark arts of the ERG and daily mail got behind her, so she’ll have to repay them by being corrupt. They are both truly diabolical candidates. Shame Boris kicked anyone who would be half way electable out in his remainer purge - those intelligent enough not to back his ‘oven ready’ deal. Oh for someone only slightly flawed such as Amber Rudd now!!!

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2022 13:04

There would be absolute outcry if she did, having said she wouldn’t in front of a TV audience of millions. He’s going to sit on the back benches flinging shit until the next election.
