To wonder why people get long talon nails?

I'm fascinated by the super long, talon-like false nails. Especially the square shaped and the really pointy ones. I thought it would be a short lived statement trend but it's lasted for years now.

Curious about what people like about them? Why do you think they've been so enduring?

How do they wash their ears in the shower?

I don’t have long nails but I don’t think I’ve ever washed my ears in the shower?! What do you need short nails to do it for?

Mothapples · 20/07/2022 07:39

@ ellieboolou Same.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 20/07/2022 08:00

They make me heave. They’re so repulsive.

I used to watch a YouTube channel but then she got these long fake nails and used to CLACK them together as she was talking. I haven’t watched her since. It made my skin crawl.

toomuchlaundry · 20/07/2022 08:09

How do you do things like gardening, wear gloves with nails like that?

MollyRover · 20/07/2022 08:10

Long nails are repulsive. I have a friend who gets her acrylics done monthly and every single time she needs everyone to admire them. It makes me want to vomit, they're a dirt trap and nothing else. I also like getting a manicure but anything longer than just over the fingertips is not hygienic.

These are mine and I love them. I can easily wipe my bum, wash dishes, work ect. Better than some without nails 🙂
Each to their own, I like them, and I don't judge others on what they like 👍

😨

Always a little jealous of length like yours, I keep mine about here but I love your set

I am intruiged as to what other posters count as too long though? What's the acceptable length if getting acrylics?

The thumb nail looks like it’s barely attached. Can they ever fall off?

TheGetaway · 20/07/2022 08:38

Personally, I hate them.

I don’t have my nails done because I want to follow fashion or look like Cardi B (nothing wrong with her though), it’s because I personally like how they look

Choices aren't made in a vacuum, these nails weren't around 50 years ago and aren't worn in other parts of the world, so it's not just that you like how they look, your preference is culturally influenced, as it is for all of us. Extra long and colourful nails get attention because they stand out. If I want to stand out in any way, it's personally not for something quite so revolting and facile as brightly coloured plastic stuck on the end of my fingers.

Also, I use my hands a lot in my daily life and work, they would definitely prevent me from doing what I need to do each day.

”I, I, I, I...”

You do realise that nobody gives a shiny fuck about what you do with your hands at home and at work, don’t you?

I mean, you certainly use your hands a lot to type a load of rubbish, but oh well, chacun à son goût.

Don't you scrub inside your ears? Where wax would form? I do that daily while still waiting shower gloves (the scrubby type). Or do you mean that you clean your ears when not in the shower?

It seems like something people with a lack of imagination and style do to get attention/approval from peers, so they can show off how well-groomed they are as though it means something. Sorry! It's just a matter of taste for me, and they're not to mine.

You're slagging off women in this and other posts on this thread @Mothapples.🙄

Kanaloa · 20/07/2022 09:01

There’s not really that much to wonder about - people get them because they like them. You personally don’t like them, but if you’re relatively intelligent it’s not really a confusing concept that others do like them. I couldn’t imagine myself ever ever getting into horse riding but some people pump shocking amounts of money into their horses and things. I don’t sit around thinking ‘why would anyone have a horse?’ I know why. Because they like horses.

Wishyfishy · 20/07/2022 09:04

I have never, ever actually known anyone with nails like this. I’ve seen them on social media of course but never on someone I know.

Kanaloa · 20/07/2022 09:04

milkyaqua · 20/07/2022 00:15

Modern version of foot-binding.

Fucking hell 😂 I’ve seen some exaggerations on mumsnet in my time but paying to have your nails put on being compared to having your feet deliberately broken and deformed as an infant is the best one yet.

WhatIsThisPlease · 20/07/2022 09:07

I think they're horrible. Especially when you can see underneath them and they look really grubby 🤮

I also think they look really really common (sorry, just my opinion).

I had false nails done for my wedding and I hated how unclean they felt - so much so that I soaked them off while on my honeymoon.

Pibble · 20/07/2022 09:25

Are we supposed to scrub our ears in the shower?? This is news to me....

As for long nails, the clacking sound puts mt teeth on edge, I cant stand it! Ditto nail filing...I cant bear seeing someone file their nails, much less do my own 😣

SunflowerGardens · 20/07/2022 09:29

They're just very hun aren't they. Which is fine, some people are huns and they spend a lot of money on things like this and would be disgusted by my scruffy short fingernails.

Ummm no i definitely don’t, that sounds like a recipe for an ear infection!

Badgirlriri · 20/07/2022 09:30

Oh this again. Oldies female bashing the younger ones. Just like with make up, fillers, hair extensions etc . If you don’t like it nobody is forcing you to do it. If you haven’t got anything nice to say, why say anything?

gogohmm · 20/07/2022 09:35

@Shoxfordian

Well said. Off to get mine put on today. I keep them fairly short but I like that they don't crumble like my natural nails. I have gel overlay which is thinner than acrylic and most people think they are my natural nails

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 09:37

@gogohmm
Thanks 😊

Enjoy your new set, I need to get mine done soon

BanjoVio · 20/07/2022 09:38

I have a friend who uses her long, pointy acrylics to scratch wax out of her ears while she’s talking to people and then drops it wherever she’s sitting (on the floor, on the dinner table, in the car…) Makes me shudder 😖

Shoxfordian · 20/07/2022 09:46

Ok so your friend is gross @BanjoVio

#notallacrylics 🤣
