I messaged a guy a while ago on a dating app. I said 'Hi. how are you? :)'. He responded 'good u'. I unmatched him. Some people thought I was harsh for unlatching him, but I found his reply low effort and rude.

AIBU to think that reply was rude?

M&S your favourite shop?

slowquickstep · 19/07/2022 20:48

I think the guy was lucky

carefullycourageous · 19/07/2022 20:48

Oh wow. He could have been the nicest, most reliable and kind person in the world and you ditched him for sending a brief reply to your brief opener.

I think you are a bit of a wally.

Try being a bit more openminded next time.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 19/07/2022 20:48

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. You asked how he was, he answered good you, so asked how you were.

sammylady37 · 19/07/2022 20:48

“Hi, how are you?” was the response most likely to get someone blocked in my OLD days. It’s low effort and looks like a generic message sent to multiple people to test the waters, rather than someone having read the profile and decided that we’d have something in common. You reap what you sow.

RSitf · 19/07/2022 20:49

Op it was matched as others say..but on a serious note..what do you use as an opening line on these sites? I’m genuinely interested?!

mycatisannoying · 19/07/2022 20:49

I wouldn't reply to your question, as it's so low effort (sorry).
Plus, if I replied 'Not great actually. I'm on the blob and the kids are getting on my tits', would he actually care? Grin

I don't use dating apps anymore because I found the quality of men on there to be absolutely dire. There were a lot of nice guys on there, but most of them were just awful and rude. When I used dating apps, I used many different opening lines usually based off something I saw in their profile as I got used to OLD.

I would assume your opener was copy/paste and ignore it, so he did better than I would have. YABU.

knittingaddict · 19/07/2022 20:59

"Hi, how are you" = lowest common denominator in online dating.

My relative deletes all possibles with a similar opening line. To be fair she doesn't get many like that.

BellePeppa · 19/07/2022 21:00

God almighty I’m glad I don’t have to deal with this shit.

I would actually say 'hi' is the lowest common denominator and believe me I got many first messages just saying 'hi' and nothing else.

How long ago did this happen? How are you still bothered by it?!

Butterfly44 · 19/07/2022 21:02

It's not RUDE - how is rude? He responded to you when he could have ignored you - that would have been rude.
You seem hard work. Lucky escape and he's hopeful talking to someone less precious.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/07/2022 21:02

Oh it's you again.

You are being fucking ridiculous.

whomoon · 19/07/2022 21:05

When I was on OLD I would respond exactly the same to a generic ‘hi how are you’, just as pp have said, because it’s a lazy question so I’d give a lazy answer.
It would become quite entertaining when they matched my tone and responded back the same way, and I’d try and drag a conversation out with the bear minimum of syllables and words.

first messages should reflect your personality, otherwise what’s the point?

Heytheredeliah · 19/07/2022 21:05

butterflied · 19/07/2022 21:03

Because saying 'good u' in response is just rude in my opinion. I would have happily asking him many questions if he had responded more politely.

Rude? That's ridiculous. My DH would write that way in texts, he's dyslexic.

He's also an amazing person and husband.

You shouldn't be so judgemental!

Eloise38 · 19/07/2022 21:06

I don't know why other posters are giving you such a hard time. I'd also be put off by someone who shows no manners and can't be bothered to type properly!

The guy had written a bit about himself with relatively good grammar, so he clearly knew how to write.
