I choose not to smoke so why should I suffer!

Have had new neighbours for the last 6 months. She smokes not in the house but at her back door which is right next to ours. If my back door is open then of course the smoke blows into my house and also into ds bedroom if his window is open. Surely I should be able to open my door or window for fresh air. It's now starting to drive me mad, Do's anyone have any advice? Maybe I'm being too much of a coward and should speak to her about it.

Yep, Chequers, I guess I'm for real.

NappiesGalore · 17/01/2008 20:25

buy her a tent and tell her to pitch it in her garden and smoke in there. or a shed if youre feeling flush, like.

i am joking btw. not often easy to tell [hm]

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:25

Funnily enough, our neighbours dont smoke outside their back door any more

You know, that smell of freshly-smoked-cigarette-smoke-on-clothes can actually make a completely smoke-free, well ventilated room absolutely STINK of dirty ashtray?

It really is vile.

NappiesGalore · 17/01/2008 20:27

or just shout 'oi stinky, move a bit further away from my back door will you love? youre putting me off my vodka 'ere'

BrassicMonkey · 17/01/2008 20:29

I don't think yabu not to want her smoke coming in your house. I do think it's unreasonable to ask her not to smoke where she wants to on her property though. I'd just put up with it personally.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:32

If she keeps doing it, make sure you light a barbecue every time she hangs her washing out.

Although - would she actually notice the smell on her clothes?

harleyd · 17/01/2008 20:34

i light bbq's when my neighbour has her washing out
tis my garden i shall do what i like in it

NappiesGalore · 17/01/2008 20:37

no VVV, she wouldnt. i used to smoke like a trooper, had NO idea how much i reeked. no clue at all. so i dont get all indignant that smokers just dont get how much their 'aroma' offends the non smoking nostril. and boy, does it reek! .

JeremyVile · 17/01/2008 20:46

Speak to her by all means but I dont really see what she can do, moving a few steps in the other direction wont stop you smelling the smoke. Maybe her garden is big enough for her to go down the other end?

WRT the smokers not noticing the smell - thats not always the case, I smoke but I cant stand the smell.

bero · 17/01/2008 20:47

Am with VVV and Nappies. Smokers just don't get it, IME (and I was one, many moons ago).

I would mention it nicely and politely to her if I were you. (Over here nice and polite usually doesn't get you very far - hence there being a series of court judgements by which the offended party is allocated a certain number of hours in rhe day in which to air their house without fear).

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:54

I don't like the smell of bananas.

Ban them immediately.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:54

Harley - i'd like to say I'm by that, but I'm really not

JV - you are a true glutton for punishment.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:56

Desi - you freak!

Burn the bananas!

JeremyVile · 17/01/2008 21:02

Not really QV, that horrible smell of second hand smoke or smoky clothes is not what you smell when having a cigarette. And I go to quite ridiculous lengths to make sure that I dont smell of stale smoke.

Now, if every other bugger would just give up for the new year that would be grand.

'Cept you Desi, you carry on (bet you smoke Gauloises)

Chequers - what are you on about? Why are you getting so antsy?

bero · 17/01/2008 21:12

I used to smoke gauloises - but the red type

JeremyVile · 17/01/2008 21:14

uh-huh just as i suspected Bero...

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 21:16

Yes, JV. I smoke Gauloises naked in galoshes whilst wearing smoky mascara. My new year's resolution was to take up yoga again. This I have successfully accomplished ... although in some of the poses it's a fecking long way to reach the ashtray

Have you given up, darling? Well done to you if you have. That's an extra ten years in a old peoples home

Lol at Desi's yoga getting in the way of having a fag!

Given up? Oh no no no no...... I shall only give up if and when I decide to have another baby.

Baby or cigs, baby or cigs, baby or cigs.....
