I choose not to smoke so why should I suffer!

Have had new neighbours for the last 6 months. She smokes not in the house but at her back door which is right next to ours. If my back door is open then of course the smoke blows into my house and also into ds bedroom if his window is open. Surely I should be able to open my door or window for fresh air. It's now starting to drive me mad, Do's anyone have any advice? Maybe I'm being too much of a coward and should speak to her about it.

niceglasses, exactly, we all have to rub along...

heronsfly · 17/01/2008 18:13

We are backdoor smokers, out in all weathers. If my neighbour mentioned this to me,I would feel really bad and move to end of garden, but on the other hand my dh would come over all its my houseish, and prob blow smoke even more in that direction

beansprout · 17/01/2008 18:14

I agree - lots of people don't drive but have to live with pollution from cars; don't have children but have to listen to the noise etc etc etc. All part of living in society!

I hate fag smoke as much as the next ex-smoker but she is not doing it deliberately. If you could have a word, it might help but smokers are often, IME, quite protective about their habit!

tyaca · 17/01/2008 18:24

good point beansprout.

i'm not sure you can moan til you have at least brought this up with her - as another poster said, she's not psychic. touchwood, she'll be ok and move downwind!

All you can do is bring it up nicely and try to find a compromise, and that is the key word- compromise! Try to suggest when the weather is alright and your windows are open she move further away and if it's peeing down stay in the shelter of the doorway, I'm guessing you don't often have the door/window open in the rain?

idlingabout · 17/01/2008 19:35

Agree with Chequers. We had this problem all through the summer with a neighbour whose mother visited regularly and smoked just outside their door. It would blow straight in to our kitchen and made eating meals extremely unpleasant. We had to stop eating a number of times as her second-hand smoke was making us feel sick. I know people should have rights on their own property but I would be interested to see if it is eventually decided that causing smoke to enter another person's home constitutes a nuisance. I don't want to be passively smoking - it is dangerous to my health, unlike other aspects of neighbour quarrels such as noise or over-hanging trees.

FarcicalAlienQueen · 17/01/2008 19:35

but Chequers - surely you could argue that in the summer if she moves away from the back door and smokes further down the garden, and the said "small child" is playing in the adjoining garden - the "small child" is still going to be exposed to smoke???

but surely the amount of smoke which could easily pass through to the next garden (given that there's no windows/doors to get through) is much more than could get in through a window????

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:09

Idling, there is no conclusive proof that sniffing a bit of second hand smoke is harmful to your health, despite what the purists would have you believe.

Some of you must be very fragile, is all I can say.

idlingabout · 17/01/2008 20:12

There is for me Desiderata - it sets of my allergies.

edam · 17/01/2008 20:13

spot on with the fragile comment, Desi.

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:14

OK Idling, that's fair enough.

DrNortherner · 17/01/2008 20:17

As an ocassional smoker I'd be pretty miffed off if my neighbour complained about this tbh. She is doing the decent thing and smoking outdoors. YOu can just shut your door surley?

Or, start coughing madly next time she lights up?

My neighbour ahs teh odd sneaky fag at her bcak door and I can't smell it.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:18

It may well not harm, but I'd rather not smell like a rancid ashtray through having my back door or windows open. If you choose to smell like you have bathed in fag ash that really is up to you. I dont see why others should have to suffer such a disgusting habit. And it IS disgusting. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about smoking. You are only kidding yourselves.

I'd get the garden hose out. Give a quick sprinkle in her direction when she lights up whilst apparently hosing down the patio/cleaning the windows.

If she says anything, tell her you thought you'd be alright, because the wind usually blows in the opposite direction.........and you know this because..........

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:19

You wouldnt DrN - your sense of smell has been burned away by those "occasional" smokes......

I Smoke and I think you should talk to her. I never Smioke in front of DD or other Children, PG Ladies etc. I have never even sat in a smoking carridge on the train as it was too smokey!

If you came to my door and told me it was bothering you I would move. It is my nasty habit not yours. Luckily we are detached so I hope I don't annoy my nieghbours but you have made me think so perhaps I will move down the garden a bit now!

harleyd · 17/01/2008 20:22

lol vvv
if my neighbour 'hosed' me it would be wrapped pretty quickly round her neck

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:23

DH and I caught out FIL smoking because he thought that by standing outside the back door no-one would notice the smell......I mean FGS

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:23

Bloody hell, VV. If one person smoking in their back yard can make you smell like a ashtray because your window's open, I suggest you move a bit faster

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/01/2008 20:24

I doubt it harley - you'd be too busy 'saving' your ciggies and drying off your lighter or matches

I know how you all feel about losing that stress-relieving smoke
