To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

Our house is 1930s and leaky but it was only 23C inside today so not too bad, it was 30C outside.

Part of the issue, though, is that a lot of people don't know how to cool down their homes or keep the heat out, to give the insulation a chance.

The other issue is that insulation levels in the UK are actually very poor, so not good at either heat or cold. We have some of the leakiest homes in Europe.

You just shut blinds and windows when it's hotter outside or the sun is on them. Open doors and windows in early morning and then the evening when it's cooler outside. Just common sense.

My house here in the UK stays cooler better than my Sydney ones did in similar temperatures. There were gaps under the front and back doors, in one house the carpet would lift when the wind blew under the house.

You say 'just common sense' and yet I've seen plenty of advice from schools, workplaces etc over the last week about opening all windows, etc. It feels like common sense to me, but I grew up in Queensland.

A lot of people here don't know it, and for those with decent insulation it means they don't get the benefit when it's hot.

We can't close windows in schools. We're still ventilating for Covid 😆

The official DfE advice is actually to leave windows fully open overnight "if possible" Hmm and to pull them to, but leave them open enough to ensure "adequate" ventilation, once the outdoor temperature is higher than that outside Confused

@Svara the common sense bit is the issue
Honestly the general public are stupid (customer service roles for 22 years)

Things I've been asked/told at work
There's a years grace period for an MOT
A car can use diesel as well as petrol
Windscreen washer fluid shouldn't run out ever
A red warning light means it's fine to carry on driving at 70mph on the motorway
Why can't the garage test a fault that only happens at 100mph
You can't drive a car without sat nav
Services for a car aren't ever needed and it's a money making scam

You should blog this. Your torture as employment can be our amusing entertainment.

I feel I’d have gotten sacked in the first week with any of these examples thrown my way.

Peloaddict, doesn't surprise me at all! 😂
Any customer threads on here are the same too, it's amazing what people do not know.

I highly recommend sticking cardboard on windows that the sun hits as a quick. temp measure.

The back of our house is always hit really bad on hot days and I already had window film on them which made little difference. Stuck thick cardboard, from some furniture boxes we had in the garage, with sellotape last night and it’s made such a difference this afternoon.. Left a few small gaps for light to come through so don’t need to put the light on.

@Liebig I'm on the phone so nobody can see my face WinkWink

@PeloAddict - I've been in customer service roles for over 40 years, and I totally agree about the general public being stupid!

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 10:27

The holiday rep threads about people being stupid were funny once ( might have been on Reddit too?)
I know I'm not always the sharpest tool at times , but some people really are hard of thinking at times or don't look things up.
It's much easier now to find out basic things as well
