To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

I agree. It is not comparable to other countries that regularly see these high temperatures. Even if they do not have air conditioning they have tiled floors/light colours, they are designed not to trap heat. The UK on the other hand has insulated houses/buildings, doubled glazed windows, carpets. All designed to trap heat.

Thejoyfulstar · 16/07/2022 23:27

Fun fact: if you're breastfeeding, the consistency of your milk will change in the heat. I noticed my milk started pouring out like water when it started getting hot in the European country I live in. Anyone else notice it?

A lot of countries have heat like this for days or weeks at a time, we can manage two days

And that’s why their population and infrastructure are acclimatised to it and we are not. It’s extreme for us especially the vulnerable (who wouldn’t holiday in said places)

the hot euro countries are also experiencing extreme weather drought and fires. They’re not just coping

GeekyGirl42 · 17/07/2022 01:22

All my Italian and Spanish friends & colleagues are taking it very seriously, because they know what this can do.

I think people have trouble understanding that 35 is just below human body temperature and so hotter than that is potentially dangerous. In Southern European countries that regularly experience these temperatures this is understood and they

  • Have school holidays timed with hottest months of the year
  • Adjust working patterns (is why you might find shops in Italy or Spain are closed early afternoon)
  • Have shutters on windows to keep the heat out
I manage a Spanish chap and he's visiting family in August. We've adjusted his working pattern so that he can follow local timings, for exactly this reason.
mathanxiety · 17/07/2022 02:29

@Thejoyfulstar all of my DCs were born in early summer and late summer in the US and I definitely noticed a change in the consistency when the heat finally broke and autumn started.

mathanxiety · 17/07/2022 02:33

Even assuming you're correct that there is any overlap between the two groups, the fact that when British people go abroad they're in accommodation designed for the climate, often with air con, and not doing any hard work while they're there would be a complete explanation.

YY to that, and may I add, people are wearing weather-appropriate clothes, not stifling school uniforms and what is considered work-appropriate attire.

isthismylifenow · 17/07/2022 13:42

Or just get up early enough to miss the hot temperatures, I think not walking them at all is lazy

Sorry for not quoting to the previous post( i Itried) but this was a reply to my advise to not walk your dogs in these temperatures.

To this poster who claims it is just laziness, please go for a nice long walk barefoot, then report back to how your feel once you are back. I think the amount of heat tar holds might surprise you.

And for those saying go for a walk in the morning, those of us who live with these temps as normal, start work and school at 7am, so its not always possible.

Unfortunately i think vets are going to pretty busy next week....

Prolonged heatwaves certainly cause a problem but 2 days shouldn't aside from those making stupid choices.

The only thing that is really still the case is the school holidays - in hot countries many people work in tourist and hospitality industries and the summer is their busiest time working long days. Few will be indoors in air conditioning. It's also low paid and majority can't afford nice airy well designed homes with shutters on the windows. The same as here, greed has meant that developers throw up flats for the least amount of money with little thought (and often far more lax regulations than we have in the UK).

Living abroad for a significant time, I don't know anyone who ever had the time to have siestas outside of those who were retired

People keep mentioning 40 degrees, I cant see a forecast which says this is on the cards.

The hottest place for Tuesday is Peterborough at 37. It might go above that of course but why are people mentioning 40 degrees?

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 13:59

40 was mentioned yesterday on the weather news , but that seems to have changed today and it's now 37.
What we could do with and need is some rain really.

The 40 will most likely be at Heathrow airport or somewhere like that it only needs to be 40 at one place, a bit like snow at Christmas, I guess there will be great disappointment in the media if we don't get a 40

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 14:01

I'm in Northants and we still have a forecast for 39 on both days

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 14:03

The media will be disappointed if it's not 40 somewhere tomorrow or Tuesday.
The pics of people on the beach means people are refusing to stay indoors!! As long as they are really sensible I guess it should be ok though.

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 14:04

Northampton?

it says 34 for midday Tuesday on MSN, not sure where that is from, must be the main met office prediction?

Its been mentioned everywhere it seems to me

Plus its now an amber warning, not a red warning.

Near Northampton, BBC weather

It's forecast to rain for much of the country on Wednesday

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 14:09

Obviously I will be happier if it is 34 rather than 39😀

Near Northampton, BBC weather

Thats quite a difference in prediction, I wonder why different sites have different forecasts

Im hoping the MSN one is correct, it has revised down considerably for where I am on the south coast, at one point it was saying 36, now its 29 for both days. Even yesterday it had 30 for both days, now today its saying 29 for both days and much cooler at night.

Still a red warning where I am for tomorrow and Tuesday. Amber is for today.

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 14:14

This is very interesting

Im now looking at the BBC forecast. its telling me its 20 degrees here now. MSN says its 24. I can tell you its probably 24.

BBC says its going to be 25 tomorrow and 29 on Tuesday. MSN says 29 on both days.

These are significant differences in prediction. Who's right?

I think OYBBK did a good description of how this worked either on this thread and elsewhere...wonder if she's around..

In her stead ...the various Met forecasting organisations ( and there are a few around now) I think have slightly different methods/use slightly different models to generate their forecasts. ..so you get a scatter in the results..

Of course you'll only know which forecast is right and which is wrong on the day.

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 14:26

In fact the more I look into this the less I understand it! Never paid much attention to forecasts before

So the BBC predicts 29 for my area on Tuesday. But as it takes you through the day, the highest prediction is for 8pm Tuesday night, which they forecast as being 27 degrees

So where is the 29 coming from?

Don't know. I noticed that the met office prediction is 36 for Monday and 37 for Tuesday. Red warning for both days. MSN says 35 and 37. The BBC is predicting 39 on both days. Confused

Anothernamechangeplease · 17/07/2022 14:28

They're all in agreement that it's 30 degrees right now!
