To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

I think OYBBK did a good description of how this worked either on this thread and elsewhere...wonder if she's around..

In her stead ...the various Met forecasting organisations ( and there are a few around now) I think have slightly different methods/use slightly different models to generate their forecasts. ..so you get a scatter in the results..

Of course you'll only know which forecast is right and which is wrong on the day.

I see, I didnt realise there were different models uses, I thought it was just all the one met office.

Well, Im hoping the lower predictions are the accurate ones! No aircon in my office, massive windows, no insulation. Awful place.

BBC have 30 for us today and my thermometer in the shade does say 30, it actually feels quite pleasant, not too humid, I will go and have a little sit outside later under the shade

user1484056932 · 17/07/2022 14:45

On the bbc app it's saying Cambridge is 40c tomorrow & 41c Tuesday, so if that does happen MSM will be overjoyed.

notimagain · 17/07/2022 14:49

@bellac11

That's my rough understanding...For example nowadays the BBC get their info from this lot:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeteoGroup

....Not the UK Met Office.

PestorPeston · 17/07/2022 14:56

The average London temperature in July is 23C , I'm not sure it is worth arguing over whether it is 14 or 17 degrees above average.

eastegg · 17/07/2022 15:18

40 hasn’t just been ‘mentioned’, it’s been the BBC temperature forecast for my area for Monday, since Friday. I notice it’s gone down to 38 now though. So it’s not just media hype. Although I do understand the media love to run with it.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 14:03

The media will be disappointed if it's not 40 somewhere tomorrow or Tuesday.
The pics of people on the beach means people are refusing to stay indoors!! As long as they are really sensible I guess it should be ok though.

I wonder if the pictures of people on the beach is why government is saying schools must stay open tomorrow, to stop families heading to the beaches instead

I think it's tgat more of tge country tgey are saying 40.

We are a couple of hundred miles away, ours is now saying 40, it was 38

Bigmouthshouthotair · 17/07/2022 15:27

'gs should be hs 😳

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 15:31

I rarely agree with the government, but I think schools should stay open tomorrow and Tuesday
I'm sure they will make sure the kids are safe and many are closing for summer soon anyway.
If the option is there to bring them home at lunchtime maybe a few parents might do this if they can. Maybe just make it optional and let the parents decide ?
I'm sure that it's not a pleasant environment in many class rooms , but they are damned if they do and damned if they don't on this and the children have lost enough schooling already as well.

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 15:42

The 80s what schooling do you think they will be doing that is so essential?
One of my older DC broke up on Friday. Our friends with private school DC broke up at least a week ago and are on holiday by the sea?

Little one breaks up Wednesday, all teaching has been done.its fun and quizzes!
Thankfully our school has given us a choice.

Schools can only do so much, rather like during COVID when they had to keep windows open.

The teachers have limited resources!
They are not medic's or miracle workers.

TimBoothseyes · 17/07/2022 15:54

The forecast where I am started off on Friday to be 37 on Monday/Tuesday, yesterday it changed to 36 today it's now forecast on be 33 on Tuesday...by the time it gets here Tuesday will probably not reach 28. Tomorrow is now forecast at 33. The rain that was predicted for Wednesday is now predicted for Friday. Just goes to show that it's all guesswork and should only be taken as a guide rather than the "fact" MSM make it all out to be. It makes me cross that people are being whipped into a frenzy about something which MAY happen, rather than WILL happen.

Children have so much catching up to do from covid and all the schooling they missed its a shame to hear that the end of the term is used to just do non academic stuff, theres a time for that in the future but these next few years should be used to focus on kids catching up

However whether schools should close really should be down to the type of building they have, some schools will be comfortable and better than kids staying at home, some areas really wont get as hot as people are panicking about, the forecasts are revising down, some schools are badly built and are in the central belt of the heat and should consider whether they could close or not

It really depends.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 16:02

I was just making the point below that if the government did close the schools again in the red zone areas next week they will get berated by parents who have to go to into work and the children miss out again.
Those with children at private schools know that the holidays are always longer ( hence they can take advantage of cheaper holiday deals too, but thats another thread)
They really can't win on this one although I can see all sides and how hard it is to keep cool in buildings not fit for purpose in hot weather as well :(

Benjispruce4 · 17/07/2022 16:22

Rich people get cheaper holidays. It’s all wrong! Sorry for derail.

Cornettoninja · 17/07/2022 16:23

where’s that?

Mines been going up since Friday. It was predicted 36 on Friday and is now 39 for Monday/Tuesday.

its 31 today and dd is basically a puddle, I’m genuinely considering keeping her off, especially as home time is the hottest point and we have no option but to walk.

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 16:29

Bellac , nearly all school will have covered the year's curriculum by now though?

It would be bad practise to be trying to finish set work by the last few days of school?

A line has to be drawn somewhere.

Reports went out two weeks ago?

I'm sure the games and stuff have an educational angle but this isn't may /April before major exam's.

I think only parents who are desperate should send the children in.

Certainly here on the south coast, was originally forecast for 36, then down to 30, now down to 29. Lets hope it keeps going in that direction. The nighttime temps are also down, from 22 originally those nights, down to 19.

As I said, it depends on a number of factors and not all areas are going to be as hot as forecast.

Onlyhuman123 · 17/07/2022 16:41

Summersdreaming · 14/07/2022 17:34

Can you tell dd's school? They are doing fitness week including a cardio bootcamp and a long hilly hike on the hottest day, I shit you not. Advice is bring an extra water bottle.

Good grief. I think my DD would be staying home instead!!

Benjispruce4 · 17/07/2022 16:43

@Summersdreaming Department of Education advice is to stop physical activity. So your school is in breach of their advice.

mumsneedwine · 17/07/2022 16:45

Predicted 41 for my school. TFL saying don't travel unless an emergency. School is not an emergency. So I'll see my students on Weds.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 16:48

I think the very hot area has maybe shifted a bit further north, so not so much in the very south and more in the midlands, though we are still in the middle of it.

Walkaround · 17/07/2022 16:50

It would be helpful if the DfE admitted that primary schools are expected to remain open predominantly for childcare purposes during this heatwave - if temperatures do get close to 40c for a couple of days, there will be little in the way of effective academic teaching and learning taking place in the schools affected. More time will be spent trying to ensure the children keep drinking plenty and don’t overheat than anything else. However, as the DfE won’t admit to that, they will doubtless expect all absences due to concerns about the weather conditions to be recorded as unauthorised.

Can I have your thoughts please ? My husband and I have been together forever and over the years he has encouraged me to drink and sometimes I’ve woken up with him having sex with me . I have said to stop but he says “I won’t be long “ or has just ignored me and carried on. I gave up asking him to stop as it didn’t make any difference. Recently I had had a few glasses of wine and as I rarely drink it really affected me and I fell asleep. He helped me to bed where I fell asleep. The next thing I know was he was having sex with me being really rough. I told him to stop several times trying to push him off me . He just carried on and the more I tried to get him off the more rough he became. He finished and had a shower and I tried to go to sleep but felt shocked. The next morning he acted normal and we started talking and I asked him when was the last time we had sex as we hadn’t been getting on very well . He said it was a few weeks ago . He denied having sex with me the night before until I told him I remembered and I’d told him to stop . He said sorry . Then I asked him is that why he had encouraged me to drink for all those years for that purpose and he said yes maybe .. I didn’t understand it because we had an active sex life .I moved out of our bedroom that day and I don’t want to go back but he is saying I need to forget it and get over it . I can’t because I don’t even want him near me now.He is saying if I don’t move back into the bedroom he is leaving because what’s the point in living together. He is making me feel like I’m making a big deal out of nothing .
