To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

It’s winter in Mali though.

No it's not.

Awombaweha · 14/07/2022 17:44

Not tried myself, but read that (in desperation) you can hang wet/damp sheets in front of an open window and it will cool the house down a bit..

I like cooling towels, they work really, really well!

I lived in Australia, that was normal in summer.

A significant portion of Australia was also on fire in quite a dramatic fashion not more than a couple of years ago, I'm not sure "normal" temperatures of 35+ are something to be relaxed about.

bumblefeline · 14/07/2022 17:45

Agree, not looking forward to work next week. It has the sun facing the front window all day.

I have been to Vegas in August when it was 44 degrees, bloody lovely air con everywhere. We are not prepared for that kind of heat here. I think at least schools should maybe shut at lunch time so kids can be at home for the hottest part of the day.

isthismylifenow · 14/07/2022 17:46

This is just silly imo.

I live in a hot country and our schools would only do this type of activity early morning or in the evening if the Temps were reaching close to 40 degrees. To do this in the heat of the day (12 to 3pm)is asking for trouble.

Actually in my day, we would be sent home from school if it reached 42. We still had to walk or cycle anyway, but we were usually always happy about it.

Cornettoninja · 14/07/2022 17:46

I was in Turkey some years ago when it hit 40. I was told some Turks call that ‘camel killer’ weather.

Our internal body temp is what, 37 degrees? Once the outside air starts hitting around that it makes it extremely difficult for some people to cool down, which is why people get ill/die. It’s harder for people doing any kind of physical activity or surrounded by concrete which largely just reflects heat back at you.

This weather is going to be a regular occurrence. There’s no value in pretending it isn’t problematic on a population level with our current infrastructure:

QuebecBagnet · 14/07/2022 17:46

I was on holiday in Egypt in a heatwave and it was over 40degrees every day. It won’t be nice but for two days the majority will manage. Animals and elderly/vulnerable need more care but with good hydration and being careful should be ok?

PatchworkElmer · 14/07/2022 17:47

Is it the south east that’s meant to get the brunt of this? It’s ‘only’ forecast to reach 31 degrees here…

Summersdreaming · 14/07/2022 17:34

Can you tell dd's school? They are doing fitness week including a cardio bootcamp and a long hilly hike on the hottest day, I shit you not. Advice is bring an extra water bottle.

My quote didn't work.

YANBU - hot countries in the most part are built to cope with those temperatures, building design, routine etc. We’re simply not and there will be an impact on a lot of individuals in the coming days.
I was due to do a 10k race at the weekend which has been cancelled due to the amber warning. Completely understandable and inevitable once the amber warning was in place, but the amount of complaining and “er, it’s summer just be sensible” comments being thrown at the organisers is unbelievable. No concept on the impact on people like the race volunteers etc l.

This kind of pigheaded-ness drives me mad. Who the hell wants to run outside in this kind of heat?

tulips27 · 14/07/2022 17:47

It's normal in hot countries to keep windows and curtains closed until the evening. I think a lot of people don't understand how to help themselves.

This is important information. On my street everyone's got their windows open all day. It's a mistake and the effect will be more marked next week.

Veol · 14/07/2022 17:49

I think people understand but not everyone is as affected by the heat as much as others. People flock to places like Spain, Greece and Turkey every summer, so clearly lots of people don’t mind it.

PollysPockets · 14/07/2022 17:49

Im 37 weeks pregnant and struggling with the heat already this week so I'm dreading next week and not sure how I'll cope to be honest!

That is ridiculous!! If the temperature is really hitting over 30 degrees, surely they will cancel outdoor exercise activities?? 🤷‍♀️

DenholmElliot1 · 14/07/2022 17:50

We do know, it's just that there isn't much we can do about it.

Everyone seems loathe to get an air conditioning unit but in my experience it is the only thing that can cool a room down quickly. I don't understand why more people don't have them.

No, the East Midlands is predicted to be at hot as London at the moment. I know because I was hoping to escape to family in the countryside for a week!

Cornettoninja · 14/07/2022 17:50

That’s annoy me too @ThettaReddast.

Amber weather alert with ambulance black alert is not a combination any large event organiser should be ignoring. Can you imagine the comments if they went ahead and loads of people ended up in A&E with heatstroke?

dolphinsarentcommon · 14/07/2022 17:51

I wonder what percentage of the population actively seek out hot weather by holidaying abroad every year. Then lie baking in it all day.

Working in it might be difficult for some, but it's hardly going to last for long.

notyourmam · 14/07/2022 17:51

Mali doesn't quite have a normal Summer/Winter like most are thinking, even though it's in the Northern Hemisphere. Its hot season falls over the Spring months (average high nearly 40 degrees in Bamako in April!) and its coolest months are July and August. Weirdly.

LondonWolf · 14/07/2022 17:51

I realise. I have spent time in the UAE at the height of summer so I know exactly how hot it's going to be. Arrange to stay inside as much as you can and personally if my kids hadn't broken up from school already, they wouldn't be going. We are travelling to Wales on Monday and will leave at 5.30 in the morning - it's cooler there so hopefully we will avoid the worst of it.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2022 17:51

We've had our south facing windows/blackout blinds and curtains shut all week in London

It's like living in a cave Grin

We've got a portable air conditioner and I couldn't cope without it

Squirrelblanket · 14/07/2022 17:52

People do know. But it's TWO DAYS. Calm down.

Northernsoullover · 14/07/2022 17:52

I lived in gran canaria. 35 was a regular occurrence. We had a pool to cool off in and although no aircon my apartment was all marble and had sun shutters. You couldn't wander round in the afternoon though. It was hellish.

FictionalCharacter · 14/07/2022 17:52

We get this every time there’s a severe heatwave - pfft, it’s hotter in other countries all the time and they manage! Completely missing the point that it’s exceptional for this country. Hot countries do things differently and the people are acclimatised. My friend who goes to visit family every year in a hot country always comes back saying it was “a bit warm” when the temperatures were way above what we ever see here.

ParisNoir · 14/07/2022 17:52

I'm not really sure what you are expecting people to do about it- run around panicking? I looked at the weather reports and I am in the South and its only going to be really hot (over 30) for one day. ONE day. Then it goes back into the mid 20s. I think we can cope for one day........
