To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

@Nothappyatal You sound like you have a very difficult situation - I read that as a crime has been committed - I think you should start your own thread in the relationships section and get some help there Flowers

They've promised us 40 before but it hasn't been delivered 😭

They've promised us 40 before but it hasn't been delivered

My thoughts exactly. I’ll believe it when I feel it.

Wouldloveanother · 17/07/2022 18:21

Well our heatwave today was 24 degrees with a mild breeze.

etulosba · 17/07/2022 18:24

It dropped to 28 here now. Lovely.

mumsneedwine · 17/07/2022 18:32

6.30 and 31 degrees here. At school is apparently 33. Wish I was where some of you are !

50mg · 17/07/2022 18:45

It actually feels a bit chilly, in the shade in my garden now because there's a nice breeze. I'm right in the "danger zone" for tomorrow, but looking at the forecast there's a stronger breeze forecast, so might that be our saving grace?

mumsneedwine · 17/07/2022 18:53

@50mg chilly ! I'm sooooo jealous

Galileu · 17/07/2022 18:59

I'm just think about how many winters I've waited for the "THUNDERSNOW!!!" promised every year by the tabloids. Never bloody seen it so far.

I'm hoping this forecast has a similar level of accuracy, but I suspect it will indeed be fairly warm Grin

TheLostNights · 17/07/2022 19:00

37C tomorrow
39C tomorrow
Both disgustingly hot.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 19:03

Just seen our local weather on the TV and the 41 to the left of Cambridge looked a bit close for comfort

mumwon · 17/07/2022 19:29

Most of us have insulation in our rooves & walls & double glazing & only a few openable windows - our houses are built to retain heat. Many hot countries are not humid at the hottest time of year. The tarmac on roads in Australia, for instance, add something to decrease melting (one of my relatives use to work on the roads there)only a few of our office buildings, hospitals & schools have air conditioning or good ventilation - & we simply are not use to living with this kind of heat.

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 19:47

The better insulated your house is, the better it will remain protected from the outside heat apparently, there was a recent article in the news about it, advocating for more insulation

Most countries are hugely more humid than ours.

GCHeretic · 17/07/2022 19:48

I was just thinking about the last time I was out and about in temperatures like this. It was a few years ago, and I was cycling in the Pyrenees. I did eighty miles, including an ascent of the Tourmalet.

Yes, it was 37 degrees, but it was also eight hours in the saddle. I reckon sitting in front of a computer with a fan will be fine.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/07/2022 19:53

It’s saying 39 for me tomorrow which, psychologically, is a lot better than 40. Am under no illusions it’ll be a crap time endurance test though.

ToCaden · 17/07/2022 20:05

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and he keeps shoving himself into my ribs which is decreasing my lung capacity making the heat today difficult (reached 29 here).

It's 36 degrees tomorrow and I'm working so can't sleep through most of it as I did today. I'm not looking forward to it.

People have different tolerances to heat and I think everyone needs to assess their own tolerance and whether they need to adjust their activities that day.

Aha, you've just explained why my house has remained at a steady 22 degrees today, much cooler than usual heat waves. I had new double glazing installed earlier in the year. Weirdly I never connected the dots before but it does make sense.

Thundersnow is awesome, I’ve seen it a couple of times. Would kill for some now, I’m bloody boiling and this is just the start.

Exactly. The misconception that insulation equals warm keeps coming up on these threads. It keeps heat out as well as keeping it in, like an insulated flask keeps drinks cool.

Sceptre86 · 17/07/2022 21:01

It's forecast to be that hot for two days. I really don't understand the hysterics. Take sensible precautions. Of course it's more challenging for those who have a long commute on public transport or kids that have to get buses or walk to school but again it is for a short time.

Going forward I agree that more buildings, schools included will need aircon, they will have to have policies for extreme heat in schools. If it becomes a more regular thing they we will need to look at outer infrastructure and adapt (obviously will take time and expense) but steps will need to be put in place.

mumsneedwine · 17/07/2022 21:09

Last week my classroom was about 8 degrees higher than the outside temp. Mainly due to being on a higher floor, no opening windows and heat trapped in building. V v v glad I'm not in for next 2 days. That and the trains and tube would be hell for students - in fact I think hell would be cooler.
Keep cool everyone 😎

TheSummerPalace · 17/07/2022 21:37

We’ve been to Greece twice in September, when there was a heatwave and it was 39 degrees for nearly a week! One day, DH and I walked 16 km, when it was 39. We walked about all day, the other days, just not so far - as did most of the other tourists, we knew. I think I understand what it’s like!

We’ve been in Turkey when it was 45 degrees. The beach was so hot, we couldn’t walk barefoot on the sand.

RubricEnemy · 17/07/2022 21:41

"I really don't understand the hysterics. Take sensible precautions."

What/who are the hysterics? People suggesting that they will take 'sensible precautions' (staying off public transport or staying home from school or missing a theme park trip) are then accused of being hysterical. I think the only non-hysterical, sensible precautions that I have seen allowed by the Don't Be Hysterical brigade are drinking water and closing curtains. Anything more? Hysterical.

I think people understand the idea of insulation keeping heat out as well as keeping it in. However, no insulation is 100% effective, so the harder bit to understand is how much more slowly a well insulated house would heat up than an average house in 40c heat, and, once it has nevertheless heated up inside, whether it would take much longer to cool down again than a poorly insulated house?

Exactly. The misconception that insulation equals warm keeps coming up on these threads. It keeps heat out as well as keeping it in, like an insulated flask keeps drinks cool.

Part of the issue, though, is that a lot of people don't know how to cool down their homes or keep the heat out, to give the insulation a chance.

The other issue is that insulation levels in the UK are actually very poor, so not good at either heat or cold. We have some of the leakiest homes in Europe.
