To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

Your right

Im vulnerable health wise and I'm concerned for the elderly and vulnerable

Tinktravels · 14/07/2022 17:27

A lot of countries have heat like this for days or weeks at a time, we can manage two days

MyrrAgain · 14/07/2022 17:28

Disgustingly hot. I'm not even sure the kids should go to school and I should go to work

Rummikub · 14/07/2022 17:28

And the hot countries are more set up for those temps. I am scared of how hot it will be next week. Can’t cope with the heat.

RJnomore1 · 14/07/2022 17:29

It’s winter in Mali though.

heldinadream · 14/07/2022 17:29

People are in denial about climate change and want to pretend it's all fine. However there's this thread OP.

People die in these sort of temperatures. Air conditioned safe spaces need to be made available.Instead of taking good practice from other countries we indulge in whataboutery.

DisgruntledPelican · 14/07/2022 17:31

YANBU that people don’t realise how hot it will be, but YABVU to compare temperatures on the same day in hotter countries. Because as you know, temperatures vary day to day. Those places are consistently very very hot.

SirChenjins · 14/07/2022 17:32

Hot temperatures for some parts of the UK for a few days.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 14/07/2022 17:33

I lived in Australia, that was normal in summer.

Scianel · 14/07/2022 17:33

It hit 38 in many parts of the south in July 2019.

RJnomore1 · 14/07/2022 17:29

It’s winter in Mali though.

I thought it was in the northern hemisphere so sorry if I got that wrong. There are a couple of African countries I get confused.

Nope. But god forbid you should mention it. You will get leaped on OP and torn limb from limb.

Yes there are other countries hotter than us in this world, and yes they deal with it on a constant basis but they are set up to deal with it. We are not.

I mentioned I was too hot on FB yesterday and "friends" had a right go saying I should be enjoying it and not complaining!

Tell you what, you have head to toe heat rash and come back to me.

(Jumps off soap box) 🤣

Handyweatherstation · 14/07/2022 17:34

Other countries are acclimatised to the hot temperatures and we aren't. A lot of our architecture is designed to hold in heat rather than letting it out. And we have very little air conditioning. Where I live the main windows face west so unless all the curtains are drawn at lunchtime, the house bakes. You probably wouldn't get that setup somewhere very hot.

Marmite27 · 14/07/2022 17:34

I spent several summers in Turkey when my uncle worked there. It was consistently over 40 degrees for at least 3 weeks one summer. Pushing the 45 mark as I remember as the locals said it was unusually hot. Life carried on.

We didn’t have air conditioning either, or a swimming pool. We were in an appartement block and it was hot. You manage.

Summersdreaming · 14/07/2022 17:34

Can you tell dd's school? They are doing fitness week including a cardio bootcamp and a long hilly hike on the hottest day, I shit you not. Advice is bring an extra water bottle.

The UK is not Australia.

50mg · 14/07/2022 17:35

I'm fully expecting it to be like so many other extreme weather warnings and not to be quite as bad a forecast, but what do you want me to do about it? I know it's supposed to get very hot, but what can I do? I'll be sensible based on the conditions on the day, the same as every other day.

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 14/07/2022 17:38

Fully aware thanks. I used to live in a country where 40 degrees plus was normal in the summer

ThettaReddast · 14/07/2022 17:38

YANBU - hot countries in the most part are built to cope with those temperatures, building design, routine etc. We’re simply not and there will be an impact on a lot of individuals in the coming days.
I was due to do a 10k race at the weekend which has been cancelled due to the amber warning. Completely understandable and inevitable once the amber warning was in place, but the amount of complaining and “er, it’s summer just be sensible” comments being thrown at the organisers is unbelievable. No concept on the impact on people like the race volunteers etc l.

Rummikub · 14/07/2022 17:38

As pp said U.K. homes are built to retain heat. Interiors are carpeted. In hotter countries it’s stone floors and shutters.

It's normal in hot countries to keep windows and curtains closed until the evening. I think a lot of people don't understand how to help themselves.

Iflyaway · 14/07/2022 17:41

It’s winter in Mali though.

This makes me laugh. It lies south of Europe and partly in the Sahara desert. I've been twice in winter. Still hot. It's summer there now too.

AceofPentacles · 14/07/2022 17:42

Well in Spain for instance, all shops and offices close in the hottest part of the day, we do not have these mechanisms. Shut your curtains! Lol.

CuriousCatfish · 14/07/2022 17:43

It's only for a couple of days though. Not like it's going on for weeks.
