To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

A lot of countries have heat like this for days or weeks at a time, we can manage two days

This really makes me roll my eyes. Yes you're right they do and do you know what they do in, for example Dubai? They have intensive air con everywhere, no one goes out in it and over the summer holidays huge indoor events are set up for children to attend. There is literally no one on the streets during the day.

Louise0701 · 14/07/2022 17:54

It’s going to be gorgeous. Can’t wait!

Georgyporky · 14/07/2022 17:54

Back to our normal summer soon - rain is forecast for next Wednesday.

It would be lovely if I wasn’t in a stuffy school!

We did Vegas in August a few years ago, now that’s hot.

35 degrees is fine if you take sensible precautions. Stay indoors when possible and drink plenty.

I really hope people aren't planning to going to be out walking their dogs.

I have in the past been ploughed on here for saying I don't walk my dogs everyday. When I say it's because it's too hot, people have tut tutted me.

So those with dogs who berated me in the past, all is well and good, but please.... Your dog will be just fine for not being waked for miles for a few days. And their paws with thank you.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 14/07/2022 17:57

I think we understand but we are not excessively bothered. I come from a medium hot country where it is 46 today. People get on with it in the short term whilst trying to do whatever they can to tackle climate change in the medium term.

Yes I know the UK is not set up for hot weather blah blah blah but we can all take sensible measures to cope with a few days of heat. There's no point in frothing.

BTW where I am in the UK the temperature rarely gets to 25 so the "extreme" temperatures don't apply everywhere.

I was on holiday in Egypt in a heatwave and it was over 40degrees every day. It won’t be nice but for two days the majority will manage. Animals and elderly/vulnerable need more care but with good hydration and being careful should be ok?

I was also in Cairo when it was 40 degrees. Saw the pyramids and everything. My feet were swollen as hell by the end of the day after walking in flip flops. But no one was dropping dead in the streets. And don't try to tell me everyone there has air conditioning!

LondonWolf · 14/07/2022 17:58

We've got a portable air conditioner and I couldn't cope without it

Can I ask what brand it is? I am getting one (or two) next year and want to get something decent.

MarshaMelrose · 14/07/2022 17:58

I live in the north west. It's hard to get too excited over predictions of heatwaves. My electric blanket is on standby.

IdiotCreatures · 14/07/2022 18:00

@PollysPockets have LOTS of ice in. Towel wrapped around ice cubes for the back of your neck and feet in a bucket with ice added to cold water.
Hopefully you don't have to move around too much. I remember being over warm at that stage of pregnancy in Dec with my first and in Jan/Feb with my second. These kind of temps would have left me unable to function.

We can acknowledge it but whwt else can we do? Take sensible precautions. There's not a lot else we can do.

Crocsandshocks · 14/07/2022 18:01

People are totally in denail. I asked some mums at the school gate, whether they are ready for the extreme heat. They barely awknowldged it. I'm tempted to keep the dcs off school but I've been invited to a day long work meeting in an non air conditioned room. I'm thinking of excuses as we speak

spanishmumireland · 14/07/2022 18:03

Summersdreaming · 14/07/2022 17:34

Can you tell dd's school? They are doing fitness week including a cardio bootcamp and a long hilly hike on the hottest day, I shit you not. Advice is bring an extra water bottle.

Spain is used to it, we manage by drinking lots of water and staying away from the heat/sun and work around the cooler hours. We also eat liquid cold soups such as gazpacho o salmorejo. We normally don't use air conditioning and at the end you acclimatise, even if over 35C I do not like it.
What people would never do at high temperatures is going on a boot camp or fitness camp. Your daughter school is really not thinking that through. I would have a word with the school.
And a bottle of water is not enough. You need plenty of water, a lot more than a bottle.

PaperTyger · 14/07/2022 18:03

@LaurieFairyCake

Which one please? Does it need a vent?

Svara · 14/07/2022 18:04

DenholmElliot1 · 14/07/2022 17:50

We do know, it's just that there isn't much we can do about it.

Everyone seems loathe to get an air conditioning unit but in my experience it is the only thing that can cool a room down quickly. I don't understand why more people don't have them.

The cost maybe? I couldn't afford it in Australia as a single parent. I was given a portable aircon and gave it back as I was too afraid to run it. That wasn't with today's energy prices in the UK either!

teenagetantrums · 14/07/2022 18:04

Well l work in a kitchen ..it's going to be unbearable next week. But we have to feed the old people in the care home.
I'm actually sure kids will be fine at school with extra water etc.
If they close the schools l will have no kitchen assistant as they will have no child care. It's just a few days people really need to just get on with it

TheCanyon · 14/07/2022 18:04

Considering it's been so damn cloudy here, I'm looking forward to Sun/mon/Tues to actually be warm.

fizzywat · 14/07/2022 18:04

Mediterranean/Las Vegas etc. temps are often dry desert like heat. It is more bearable than the humidity we get here with similar temps.

Sweaty sticky heat is the absolute worst. Give me 35 in Andalucia any day compared to 35 in a big UK city.

Lordofmyflies · 14/07/2022 18:05

I cant get too excited. It's going to be 26 degrees here on Monday according to Met followed by 22 and rain on Tuesday. The intense heat may affect a small part of the UK for 24-48 hours. Just be prepared, close curtains, open windows with a breeze, avoid the sun and drink lots.

Fairislefandango · 14/07/2022 18:05

And? What good will it do if everyone panics and agrees with you? So it will be as hot for a few days as it quite often is in really hot countries. Then it will cool down again (and probably rain for much of the rest of the summer, at which point everyone will complain about that instead).

I'm in Cumbria, where it's not meant to get above 26, fortunately.

ivykaty44 · 14/07/2022 18:05

What is it with all the heat threads

Yes we can read the temperature

there are a few things you can do to prepare

sleep on a towel in a room with a fan

sleep downstairs as it'll be cooler - so decamp if you have an airbed etc

take a cool shower before bed as lowering your core temperature helps you sleep

wear cotton clothing in the day

keep the curtains closed on rooms with the sun directly on them to keep them cool

keep hydrated with plain water

restrict activities

sit outside in the evening

Coffeeandcaketime · 14/07/2022 18:05

The health and safety rules around max working temperatures need to be reviewed urgently .

NeedToLeaveNow · 14/07/2022 18:06

People saying
I lived in Australia / I holidayed in Africa

None of that is relevant
Homes, Businesses, Roads / Pavements and people here are not use to it and its not the same thing
The Ambulance system is expected to collapse under pressure
This is going to be serious!

KilmordenCastle · 14/07/2022 18:07

Veol · 14/07/2022 17:49

I think people understand but not everyone is as affected by the heat as much as others. People flock to places like Spain, Greece and Turkey every summer, so clearly lots of people don’t mind it.

I agree. I hate being too hot and I can't think of anything worse than going on holiday to Spain in the height of summer. But I know people that go to the hottest place they can when they go away. I honestly don't know how they do it.

I will be spending Monday and Tuesday hiding in my house with all the blinds down, curtains closed and with multiple fans going.
