To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

Usually people look forward to the (rare) sun in the U.K., so this anxiety and fear around a couple of days heat all seems highly unusual and dramatic!

Toohot22 · 14/07/2022 18:07

I’m not sure why some people are getting so belligerent in their responses (too hot?)

I don’t want people to do anything about it. I want them to stop blithely saying ‘how do you think HOT countries cope?’ We ARE a ‘hot country’!

It’s not just ‘one day just above 30’ predicted for by me….

I don’t have a car and am dreading the walk home with dd Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday is going to feel like heaven.

If you dont have AC……google a diy swamp cooler. They were invented in the South of the USA before they had AC. They are surprisingly effective

Other ideas that work

damp towels..drape them over your shoulders or put one over dc when they are lying on their beds.

if you have a fan, run it in a window or door to bring the cool air in early in the day, then shut windows and doors and close curtains to keep out the solar load. After the sun is down and when the air is cooler outside than inside, run the fan to push the hot air out from inside the house. Open another window across the other side of the house and you will create a cross breeze and pull in the cooler night air. It works even better if your ‘pushing out’ window is high in the house as that is where the hottest air will collect

spend the day at a shopping center or somewhere with ac

dont forget cars often have ac

drink lots of water

if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or are elderly, be very sedentary and try to find somewhere cool for the afternoon at least

SmellyWellyWoo · 14/07/2022 18:09

Well it's not that hard to work out. Most people look at the forecast regularly - do you think they are morons?

Ringmaster27 · 14/07/2022 18:09

I’m really concerned about my DCs on those nights.
Our fan broke last week, I can’t afford to buy a new one right now. I’ve been banging on at my landlord for weeks that there’s no child safety latches on the bedroom windows that prevent them from opening all the way, and yet she still hasn’t done anything about it. I have the windows wide open and curtains closed during the day when the DCs aren’t here, but once they are home, it’s not safe to do that and their bedroom turns into an oven. I think I’m going to have to set them all up in my north-facing bedroom for those few nights, and I’ll sleep on the sofa. 🤯

PaperTyger · 14/07/2022 18:09

Agree London,people don't go out!!

We are supposed to be doing work and school runs!
People stay inside and rest and get active at night.

I'm not going anywhere and DH thankfully works at home.
We will stay inside, maybe watch dune...or ice cold in Alex and stay out of the heat!

I remember one extremely hot day, every driver seemed to have gone mad culminating with an elderly lady coming at me round a bend on the wrong side of the road!

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/07/2022 18:10

I came back from Eygpt a month ago. It was 37 degrees most days so yes i do understand the temperatures thanks

Toohot22 · Today 17:55
im sick about hearing about teachers moaning about the heat! These threads are all I’m reading teachers, teachers! What about nurses working on hot wards, or care homes? Factories and warehouse workers have still to go in. Im hearing folk moaning but in their next sentence they are flying out to somewhere hot during the holidays. Get a grip it’s only 2days. Wear cool clothes, drink plenty water, stay in the shade.

PaperTyger · 14/07/2022 18:11

Ring master that's awfull!!.

Very scary.

People definitely need to be flexible over bedding and sleeping.

Tinktravels · 14/07/2022 17:27

A lot of countries have heat like this for days or weeks at a time, we can manage two days

A lot of countries, like the one I spent half my life in, are better set up for hot weather. They design their houses to be cooler and better with heat, they are culturally used to the heat so services, offices, cityscapes etc take it into account, their infrastructure is built to withstand heat better, their public transport is (these days) air conditioned, etc.

They don't cope nearly as well with colder weather as we do, by contrast - to the point where we once had an exchange student from an Alpine country who said she'd never been so cold inside a house as she was in Australia in winter.

PaperTyger · 14/07/2022 18:14

Pushing I think another pressure on teacher is the responsibility for 30 others, and their medical needs.

Even on a ward a medic will be assigned fewer than that?
There is more freedom to move around, get drinks
...ask a colleague to momentarily watch.

As a teacher you're more stuck with your charges who you have a duty of care for.

DisgruntledPelican · 14/07/2022 17:31

YANBU that people don’t realise how hot it will be, but YABVU to compare temperatures on the same day in hotter countries. Because as you know, temperatures vary day to day. Those places are consistently very very hot.

Eh? This thread is not in AIBU it is in chat. The OP has opened up a discussion thread which is extremely informative - maybe have a bit of a read of it before commenting?

JustlookingNotbuying · 14/07/2022 18:16

I’m really panicking about it, I haven’t handled the last few days I am absolutely dreading the next few days.
I am concerned for all the vulnerable people who will really suffer with this.
I am also concerned for ds who has just started an apprenticeship on a building site and dh who works outside with zero shade.
No one I know takes this seriously and will say things like ‘woohoo, if this is global warming, bring it on!’ - knobheads

ZenNudist · 14/07/2022 18:16

RJnomore1 · 14/07/2022 17:29

It’s winter in Mali though.

Came on to say this

colouringindoors · 14/07/2022 18:16

yanbu op.

We are not set up to cope with these temperatures.

I feel that no-one making decisions eg in schools has actually read the Met Office's Amber warning "Population-wide adverse health effects are likely to be experirnced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential aerious illness or danger to life"

If my child was scheduled for anything other than lessons, I'd be pretty robust in communicating this to them!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/07/2022 18:17

In 6 months time we will be having exactly the same thread but substitute heat with cold/snow.
We are not set up for extreme heat or cold because we generally only experience either rarely and it would be very expensive to be set up for both.

spanishmumireland · 14/07/2022 18:18

Another piece of advice from past experience in heatwaves over 40C.
If you have to be outdoors bring always a bottle of water and always stay in the shade. When you feel the heat is becoming unbearable, don't think twice and pour a bottle of water over your head. Seriosly, you feel much better instantly. This prevents heatstroke.

CMZ2018 · 14/07/2022 18:18

Oh well

SpeckledlyHen · 14/07/2022 18:19

LondonWolf · 14/07/2022 17:58

We've got a portable air conditioner and I couldn't cope without it

Can I ask what brand it is? I am getting one (or two) next year and want to get something decent.

@LondonWolf I got this one www.inventorappliances.com/portable-air-conditioners/chilly and it is really good. And not too pricey. I got it on amazon so delivery was quick. It comfortably does one room and it is quite heavy but it is portable. I used it last night. They are not quiet but I guess you can't have everything.

BeneficiaryMadness · 14/07/2022 18:22

My friend is taking her 3 young children to a theme park on Tuesday, forecast is 38. I’ve gently suggested to maybe re arrange and go another day but she thinks it’s going to be fine.
I think it’s crazy to take kids out for a full day in that heat!

IrisVersicolor · 14/07/2022 18:22

Don’t panic, I’ve been in countries that hot. Buy a cheap rechargeable handbag size fan on Amazon Prime, buy some Dynamint roll on to keep you cool, and always have some water with you.

EnSextant · 14/07/2022 18:23

I can't wait. I hate dreary, grey weather and long for proper heat.

collieresponder88 · 14/07/2022 18:23

So what do you want us all to do then

Halleluja · 14/07/2022 18:23

The problem is that a lot of countries usually reaching these temperatures have more ‘hot’ days than here in Britain. We are simply not used to it, our houses are mostly carpeted, insulated and hold the heat more. I’m glad my workplace has air con!
