I don't think he is. Comes across as whiny and self-righteous. Next election I suspect the Tories are toast.

So - if not Dishi Rishi or Sir Keir - then whom?!

Yes please! I am totally up for a straight-laced, intelligent leader with morals. 'Charisma' can f*ck off.

We now have 24hr news and where once politicians looks and voice were unimportant, now they have 20 seconds to make an impact. And if they can't reach out through the tv lens and make an impression and grab people's interest, no one will even know who they are.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 17:36

The by-elections were not a particularly good result for Labour apart from in London

Have we had a London by election recently? Labour did pretty well in Wakefield with almost half the vote. As I understand it they didn’t put much effort into N Shropshire, Tiverton or Chesham & Amersham because the Libdems stood more chance of winning them. They didn’t contest Southend and they won Batley & Spen. Looks OK to me but then I’m an Anyone Except the Tories voter.

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 17:42

Looks ok

after this past year ? Right in the middle of partygate

under Blair they were often ahead 20 points we knew what the Blair leadership was promising long before the election was called

watch how the Tories will now pull the party together we shall be fed their next slogan we shall hear their plans they are not going to be sitting about biding their time to show us what the new leader is about

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 17:44

Sorry meant local elections …

He can't define what a woman is. For a man with a deep understanding of the law, that's fairly problematic.

Nobody actually cares about that aside from a few people on Mumsnet.

It's a fringe issue. There's hundreds of bigger problems to sort out first.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 17:47

Yes @HRTQueen, looks OK. As I said, as long as someone’s ousting the Tories - which they are, when did they last win a by-election? - I don’t care which party it is.

LemonsOnSaleAgain · 10/07/2022 17:53

I think Angela Rayner is great, especially at PMQT recently. She was certainly not the one who came across as uncouth.

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 17:56

The point is it should look a lot better for Labour they need to be questioning why isn't it looking better for them and all Starmer says is we are doing rather well like he is surprised 🙄

we now will soon have another Tory leader a change in direction for the Tories they will be looking at why they have lost support (much of it is glaringly obvious) who is still supporting them

misteek · 10/07/2022 17:59

Are you a member of both the labour party and conservative party? if not you cant vote for them anyway.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 18:02

The damage is done now @HRTQueen. Trust takes a very long time to rebuild and it’s extremely likely the new leader will have held a cabinet post and will be seen to be complicit with Johnson and part of his regime. Add to that the economic carnage coming down the track and I reckon the Tories will be relieved to relinquish the keys to Downing Street.

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 18:04

Me ?

im a member of the Labour Party and vote Labour (apart from under Corbyn)

I voted for Starmer I believed against Johnson he would be refreshing for voters and appealing I was wrong he isn’t particularly either as he just doesn’t connect

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2022 18:10

KS doesn't connect with me or my friends.
Most people i know don't like him at all
Not sure what it is really , I think he might be a bit too try hard ? Or just not cut out for the job.
He seems a reluctant leader.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 18:12

But you keep telling us all your friends are Tories @the80sweregreat so you wouldn’t expect the Labour leader to connect with them.

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 18:17

I think you are wrong the Tories never want to be in opposition too much to lose for many

they also can absolutely turn things around what applies to the Tories isn’t the same as Labour it’s always more of an uphill battle for Labour

the have rid themselves of a leader that won an 80 majority (his popularity can’t be ignored) and he didn’t go easily that’s enough for them to work on I wouldn’t under estimate them at all

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2022 18:23

I know Blossom !
I'm sorry I keep repeating this
They honestly are for the conservatives, so I understand why they don't like KS , but before they have had some good words to say about the leader , but with him they have nothing.
Even my one friend who is a Labour supporter isn't keen either : it is bizarre. I'm not sure why he can't connect with people ?
I'll be quite now !

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 18:24

OK @HRTQueen, we’re never going to agree. This bunch of chancers’ luck will surely run out eventually. No government will ever last for eternity. I waited 18 years to get rid of the Thatcher/Major lot and 1 May 1997 was all the sweeter for it.

Floraanddougal · 10/07/2022 18:26

I also think stammer has done a great job at kicking back the hard left and the anti semitic rhetoric that was embedded. But he’s not getting into power in three years we all know it, just like we knew Corbyn wouldn’t despite the polls. Albeit for different reasons. Labours still in the wilderness and the labours supporters would do better to fix it then try to pretend it’s not.

stammers not the guy. Labour need a charismatic believable leader with gravitas and a big personality, it ain’t stammer, it will never be stammer.🤷‍♀️

jgw1 · 10/07/2022 18:29

I am loving this thread. Starmer won't be the next Prime Minister, but is nearly twice as popular as the current Prime Minister. The logic is impeccable.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 18:31

I wasn’t having a pop @the80sweregreat.

Incidentally, anyone know who this stammer is @Floraanddougal keeps pontificating about?

Quia · 10/07/2022 18:42

Od130990 · 10/07/2022 01:36

Boris if he runs again.
I can't see any potential in any others tbh

How can he? Virtually no-one in the Conservative party (apart from idiots like Dorries, Bone and Mogg) will work with him.

vermicello · 10/07/2022 18:49

It will be whoever Klaus Schwab and the elite wants to be Prime Minster.

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2022 18:51

I know Blossom!
..

the80sweregreat · 10/07/2022 18:52

Who is this Klaus person ?
I've heard his name crop up a lot

User135644 · 10/07/2022 19:01

All this talk of Boris's popularity.

He got 43% of the vote in 2019. Teresa May got 42% in 2017.

Difference was:

  1. Millions more voted Labour in 2017. Those votes in 2019 went to other parties like the Brexit Party because it became a Brexit election. Also in 2017 many voted Labour (more for the local MP etc) not thinking Corbyn had a chance of winning, to the surprise of most, he nearly did. That stopped a lot voting Labour in 2019.

  2. Nigel Farage stood down the Brexit Party in all Tory seats. That would have massively eaten into Tory votes had he not been pressured to do that.

This was all when Boris was in the honeymoon of his leadership as well and 'Get Brexit Done' from those sick to death of it.

Katypp · 10/07/2022 19:04

I think the problem with Labour is they have completely lost sight of who they should represent.
I live in the North. I never ever expected my constituency to be Tory, ever. And yet it is. And the reason for that was - imo- people just could not relate to anything the Labour Party stood for. The day Emily Thornbury poured scorn on the habits of the very people she was relying on for votes was the day the Labour Party died for working-class people.
People in Northern ex-mining and ex-shipyard communities couldn't care less about arguments over gender, they really couldn't. Actually, apart from a very vocal but tiny group, I don't think anyone much cares tbh.
The Labour Party has been annexed by a bunch of people who are every bit as well-heeled as the Tories but pretend they're not. They all wring their hands and say how, awful it is and pretend they understand what it's like to struggle when they have no idea. Apart from Raynor, who is an absolute disgrace and should be sacked. Starmer is the drop that never dropped and is far too bland to be a PM. A leader needs presence and he has none, regardless of how clever he is.
