I don't think he is. Comes across as whiny and self-righteous. Next election I suspect the Tories are toast.

So - if not Dishi Rishi or Sir Keir - then whom?!

@Katypp A lot of these places fell into the Brexit trap though. I doubt they'll vote Tory again, they were just adamant they wanted Brexit at all costs (i.e. the red wall towns) and would have voted for any party if it meant Brexit. Thus they voted Tory, even mining towns. It was a Brexit election.

Labour hasn't been the same party since the New Labour takeover though and Corbyn didn't exactly take it back to its roots, as a lot of his schtick was student politics.

They're crying out for Andy Burnham to come in. He's put himself for leader before and not win, but he's admitted he's learned a lot since stepping out of the Westminster bubble.

Katypp · 10/07/2022 19:16

Another thing that I think annoys people about Labour and their followers is the implication that people don't vote Labour because they don't care as much as Labour followers or they are too stupid to understand why they should vote Labour and need to be shown the error of their ways. I think the assumption that supporting Labour makes you such a good and caring person that it's perfectly fine to abuse those that don't agree with you does Labour any favour either.

Againstmachine · 10/07/2022 19:20

Keir's history at the CPS is disgraceful, but people give him a free pass as it didn't pass his desk.

We'll he was in charge it's irrelevant to me.

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 10/07/2022 19:23

Cost of living crisis hasn't really hit us yet.
Wait til October when further rises in energy bills kick in.
When the country has to start checking imports post brexit( ( postponed how many times ?) and there are shortages of food etc.
We are stuck with a small state low taxes government and public services like the NHS are collapsing.
I don't necessarily think the tories are a shoe-in...

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 10/07/2022 19:25

@Againstmachine like Johnson then ?

Which country are you talking about when you say small state, low taxes? Singapore?

Kowloondairy · 10/07/2022 19:34

My local mp, rubbish, only appears when there is a photo opportunity. Does not represent her constituents who voted overwhelmingly to leave the eu and did and continues to do everything that she can to stop it. Would not vote for her now if she was the only candidate standing.

Againstmachine · 10/07/2022 19:40

@Assanctamonioysastheycome yep but keir has been calling out Johnson for not taking responsibility.

When he clearly can't

Katypp · 10/07/2022 19:42

@User135644 I agree to a point but I honestly think if there was an election tomorrow, the Tories would get back in to my red wall constituency.
There's no doubt people voted for Boris's charisma and Brexit, but for that to take root, dissatisfaction had to be there in the first place.
Corbyn was a disaster for traditional Labour voters and Kier Starmer is so bland people don't know anything he stands for. For working-class people don't care about gender arguments or anti-semitism.

Do they abuse their constituents? If not they are a relatively good MP.

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 10/07/2022 19:54

@sst1234 clearly you haven't taken note of what many tories want and the potential party leaders are claiming to want. Only Sunak is talking about not raising taxes. Read Britannia Unchained (written by Liz Truss and Raab amongst others) and you'll see their blueprint for the UK which coincidentally is not a good look.

Assanctamonioysastheycome · 10/07/2022 19:54

Sorry that should be @Againstmachine

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 20:01

Only Sunak is talking about not raising taxes

Only Sunak says he won’t cut taxes. He’s the only remotely fiscally sensible one to declare so far.

Againstmachine · 10/07/2022 20:02

@Assanctamonioysastheycome

What's that got to do with it we were talking about keir Starmer who who was useless and denies everything that happened during his tenure at the CPS.

And then hosts a party but gets cleared of it, but morally he is still wrong

How is sensible to walk into stagflation?

Againstmachine · 10/07/2022 20:03

@Blossomtoes he's probably only one who has seen the books and is most realistic.

Given that they all ran on a manifesto to not raise taxes very recently and have only raised taxes since then, why should we believe them?

Precisely. How the fuck any of them think they’re going to pay for tax cuts beats me. Unless, of course, they’re going to revive austerity because that went so well last time.

I'm a Mancunian. I like that people admire elected officials of my fab city. It makes me proud. 🙂
So, out of interest, having been mayor for 5 years now, can you name me some things hes done as mayor that would lead you to say he'd be a good PM?

He's widely acknowledged by people who actually know about the work he did as one of the most effective DPPs of the last 30 years.

I always liked the guy for what he did regarding Hillsborough after the families were ignored by the Labour Party for 20 years. It was Burnham that did the right thing and got the ball rolling on justice.

But he just speaks a lot of sense. He wants to bring in PR and has good ideas. He's genuine about wanting to move away from a London-centric approach to everything. He recognises Westminster needs to change and Labour need to change. I like his no-nonsense character. There's no way Labour would have lost the red wall to the Tories if he was leader.

Blossomtoes · 10/07/2022 20:55

It would have happened regardless of who the Labour leader was, it was all about Brexit and Burnham is a staunch remainer.

MarshaMelrose · 10/07/2022 20:57

@User135644
So you can't think of anything good he's done in his 5 year tenure, then. Fair enough.

HRTQueen · 10/07/2022 21:12

I think many of us have been impressed with him fighting the government foe more money during Covid

I believe he has bought investment and worked on plans to make Manchester (the cleanest city air ?)

I guess your Google’s broken. You can search Andy Burnham achievements too. Big advances in addressing homeless and improving affordable public transport.
