To send back that Jubilee book?

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

I’d have preferred the money spent on feeding the vast number of kids who come in without breakfast and go home to limited dinner. It made me cross as well.

Longroadahead08 · 09/07/2022 22:28

I hope you manage to enjoy the rest of your weekend op 💂

Cleopatra2022 · 09/07/2022 22:28

My childrens school never gave these out.

Dinoteeth · 09/07/2022 22:29

Not yours to get rid off.
My mum still has her Coronation Book given to school children at the time.

Not seen it Scottish school have broken up for summer.

SleepSleepRaveAsleep · 09/07/2022 22:29

If it's the one I'm thinking of I had to stop reading it to my kids as I was laughing so much 😆. My husband had read some of it the day before and said to me wait until you read that book it's hilarious, but I can't read it. We also received 2, a massive waste of time, energy, money and trees.

Dunnoburt · 09/07/2022 22:30

My little one loved it! I hope every one like you throws theirs away so in 50 years they may actually be worth something!

SheSaidHummingbird · 09/07/2022 22:30

Burn it. Think of it as the Royals' contribution to the winter fuel crisis.

leotardrock · 09/07/2022 21:12

I'm 55 & I still have my Silver Jubilee mug from 1977!

Send it back if you want to but really! 🤷‍♀️ Do you not have bigger stuff to be protesting about?

this!

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 22:32

Right, I've caught up I think.

I'll just have to agree to disagree with (what feels like the majority of) you in that I don't think it's a nice souvenir to 'treasure' at all. I do think it's blatant propaganda. And I don't think I'm being ungrateful to feel this way. The fact is, poverty (amongst individuals and organisations like schools etc) is rife at the moment and this scheme just feels crass and tone deaf.

To those who think that me not liking this book is a form of censorship... Nope. As previously stated, books, reading and education are a big part of my life (both personally and professionally) and I feel very strongly about letting kids read what they want to (I agree with the pp about David Walliams... I loathe his books but if my kids (at home and work) want to read him, they can have him!). If my DC love this book, of course they'll keep it. (I'm pretty sure they won't, though, because it's shit).

I quite like the suggestion of sending the book to my MP. Oddly, she is very local to me so I could even avoid the postage and hand deliver it!

I've not seen it but others are saying it teaches children about the royal family.

If that's the case, maybe it's a good thing after all. But how do they manage to explain inbreeding, Nazi-ism and paedophilia in child-appropriate language? I mean, are there pictures?? 😮😮😱

Think there’s a lift the flap page where you pull a tab and Andrew’s trolleys fall down in front of a group of children. Plus a colourful word search with terms like ‘privilege’ ‘unconstitutional abuse of power’ ‘interference in law making’ ‘archaic and undemocratic’ ‘stolen wealth’.

It’s absolutely super!

Fairislefandango · 09/07/2022 22:40

The best way to make it not a waste of money would be to give it to someone who would like it. But it sounds like you're more interested in making a point than stopping money from being wasted. Your only point seems to be that you personally don't like the book. I'm a republican and would absolutely not want that book. I'd give it to a charity shop. Sending it back would be utterly pointless! What point do you think it would convey? "Don't give me a jubilbook the next time there's a jubilee "? Grin

StrawberriesAndCreamPlease · 09/07/2022 22:43

Glad my boys have left school, we would not welcome this type of rubbish into our home.
to the pp who said it’s free, be grateful, who do you think paid for it? Clue: It wasn’t the queen. All the other sycophants, you sound pathetic.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 22:44

Excellent!

They could get really creative with the tie-ins: build-a-bear-hapsburg-chin, Long Lost ReichFamily with Davina etc ...

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 22:45

(that was to @Stath )

Well said. It is propaganda, pure and simple. Get 'em signed up to it nice and early so they believe in this crap like their sycophant, moronic parents; fairy tales about "ruling" families anointed by a god that doesn't exist (and, yes, god squad, I'm happy to burn in your version of hell, whichever one you believe in).

Pie in the sky nonsense and a complete and utter waster of money.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 22:48

Agree that it's nonsense but sadly going on this thread at least it appears to be money well spent in that it's fulfilled its remit: all the poor raggedy kiddies with no books will be grateful to the queen.

FlamingoYellow · 09/07/2022 22:49

Just a normal everyday conversation between an elderly woman and her 9 year old great grandchild...not propaganda at all...😂

To send back that Jubilee book?

Fullofhotcrossbuns · 09/07/2022 20:58

What is wrong with you?

Absolutely nothing, so far as I can see.

Katya213 · 09/07/2022 22:50

I’m not even from this country and was charmed by it. Get a life!

Quia · 09/07/2022 22:50

Didimum · 09/07/2022 22:10

You’re overestimating how much books cost to produce. It was commissioned by the government but produced by DK - a private publishing company who recoup their costs from its sale.

Time to take it easy.

But presumably they are selling it to the government?

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 09/07/2022 22:51

My DD was excited when she received her book (3 weeks after the jubilee……) she is keeping hers. She has said that she’s saving it as she knows she can make money selling it when she’s older. She’s a smart kid. 😂

Figarolechat · 09/07/2022 22:51

If anyone has a spare one I'd love one for my little one born this year :)

KettrickenSmiled · 09/07/2022 22:51

Fullofhotcrossbuns · 09/07/2022 20:58

What is wrong with you?

There's nothing "wrong" with feeling pissed off that £12 million of taxpayers' money has been spaffed on a grotesque act of sycophancy @Fullofhotcrossbuns. By the same administration that refused to feed hungry children & needed a footballer to take them to task about it.

Joyfultoes · 09/07/2022 22:52

The monarchy is revolting. And so is spending £12m on this whilst families in the 5th richest country in the world go hungry

Joyfultoes · 09/07/2022 22:54

All the people thinking they can make money on it, if they sent out 10m are you kidding? Also kidding yourself if you think anyone will give a fuck about over privileged monarchy in 50 years time
