To send back that Jubilee book?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:51

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

I agree! £12m for a shit book when people can't feed their kids or pay their energy bills. Another example of the royal family being totally out of touch.

Well, yes, but it's a democracy and dissent is still allowed. As a parent it is my choice/responsibility and privilege to say what my child gets or not, and this book, for me, is an item firmly for the recycling bin.

Totally ur choice, we cannot please everyone but the majority of parents from what I have seen are really pleased to get a keepsake.

Whereswallywonka · 09/07/2022 22:55

It cost £2.50 per child

What could you buy for £2.50 that would make a sustainable impact across a whole population? It’s not really a lot of money in the scheme of things.

If you have such an issue living in a country with a monarchy then feel free to go live somewhere else. This country wouldn't be in the poor state it's in if less people with such unpatriotic mindsets lived in it.

😂
Go on then @ImJustNotMeAnymore - explain to me, in simple sentences, how sucking up to a mindbogglingly rich & privileged family will improve the poor state of our nation?

While you're at it, tell me what you reckon is so fine about patriotism?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 22:58

Ha! My people have arrived to the thread! Glad it's not just me, after all 😊.

What is wrong with you?

This.

You live under a Monarchy. Bore off OP, honestly. You're more tedious than the book.

Yes, of course, totally my choice. I agree. I have, however, heard different feedback from other parents, but I guess we move in different social circles.

EssexSerpent · 09/07/2022 22:58

I’m not a royalist by any stretch but find it hard to get upset about this. I also find it tedious that any activity/thing someone doesn’t like is accused of being ‘tone deaf’. It’s become a really lazy phrase to throw around that has lost meaning because of it.

The DfE spending money on this is the least of our worries relative to what they and local councils waste VAST sums on. I’m a school governor and see budgets and local authority challenges (stupidity) frequently.

What volunteer/campaigning work etc. do you do to improve the situation beyond sending the book back in protest?

All the people thinking they can make money on it, if they sent out 10m are you kidding? Also kidding yourself if you think anyone will give a fuck about over privileged monarchy in 50 years time

Well, going by people on this post saying they are getting rid of the book, there won’t be many copies of the book left in 50 years time. So, the book have some value then.

The queens jubilee was a one in a lifetime event.

applecharlotte12 · 09/07/2022 23:00

@Whereswallywonka no sustainable but there are lots of ways that money could have a more positive impact on childrens lives,
injected into school breakfast clubs would be one way. Or towards art resources, or sports equipment, stationary, some nice coffee/biscuits for teachers who have been on their knees the last couple of years... I can list a million better things to spend this money on and I don't even work in a school!

Frankly I found you and the other monarchists rather depressing in your sycophantic servile attitude.

Practice curtsying. Kneel deep.

Serfs, you are serfs.

Whether you agree with it or not it is part of history. If you don't want it give it away. Nobody will care if you send it back.

But for some people on here the only versions of anything are those which carry the 'correct' message.

Are you that woman who wears the union flag skirt suit with cardboard cutouts of Prince Charles in her living room?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 21:04

My DS (5) is not remotely bothered by the book. My older DD (she's 9) is in total agreement with me

Well that's hardly surprising given your attitude.

whether you appreciate the monarchy or not, it's an historical event your children have been given a souvenir of, as adults, they may hold a different opinion than you.

just pack it away for them.

My sister got a silver Jubilee mug in 1977. My Dad got a coronation mug in 1953. Would you have sent those back? Or is it just books you object to?

I got a golden jubilee bookmark. I remember the look of rage on my dad's face Grin

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/07/2022 23:04

Whether or not you give a shit about the jubilee, it is an historic event.

A quick google tells me the estimated boost to the economy was £1.6 billion for the BH holiday weekend with increased spending and tourism. The books cost £12 million. Does that make it worse or better for you?

Monarchists always get so terribly defensive don’t they?

feistyoneyouare · 09/07/2022 23:06

If I've understood this correctly, it's not your book to send back. It's your son's. YABU.

ByeByeBoree · 09/07/2022 23:07

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing some poor sap on Dickinson's Real Deal twenty years hence, his capital city long sold to Ukrainian oligarchs and his citizenship plundered by the same government that gave him this book, desperately arguing that it's emblematic of his personal stake in the glory that is England (Scotland, Wales and Ireland having gone their separate ways some time since) and more pressingly if they do give him two quid for it he could afford to get a Freddo for his grandchildren to share at Xmas.

The difference being those tourists came of their own free will, people spent because they had a long weekend. That book was given out whether you wanted it or not.

PMAmostofthetime · 09/07/2022 23:08

I think YABU- it's not yours to send back. It's your DC. They may want it when they are older to pas down to their children.

GyozaGuiting · 09/07/2022 23:08

There’s horrific famine in Afghanistan and Yemen, war in Ukraine, in India there isn’t cancer care for a kid unless you can afford it, so you have to just leave the hospital and wait for your child to die… I couldn’t get worked up about this. It’s just a book.

EssexSerpent · 09/07/2022 23:08

Monarchists may be defensive but history shows very well how republicans are fanatics.

Yes, because a monarchist would call the book tedious?

You ok hun? Maybe you should go back to primary and learn to read. I hear they have some lovely new books.

leotardrock · 09/07/2022 23:10

This thread is like those threads where people start complaining about their kids doing Assembly or RE!
Unless you have just arrived in the Country you too will have received a gift for a Jubilee, taken part in. Christmas play, made Easter hats, if you have been through all that 'indoctrination' yourself & managed to come through the system with an ounce of independent thought why are you so frightened that your kids won't!

I just find it bafflingly!
