What's so special about Lurpack?

I've noticed before how Lurpack seems to carry social kudos as the butter of choice for those that way inclined and now everyone is losing their shit about it selling for record prices. And people who use Lurpack as their usual butter always seem to find a way to mention it ("fetch the Lurpack from the larder will you darling?") or place it in pride of place of the breakfast table (haven't they heard of butter dishes?)...

I'm not asking about the cost of living. Obviously the price of Lurpack is indicative of the financial hardship we're all facing and like petrol prices it's utterly ridiculous and horrifying.

But...Why all the fuss about Lurpack? I've had it many times, it's fine but it's just...a butter.

Is it churned by maidens and lightly salted with their diamond-like tears?

Best butter personally that I've had was sea salt crystals one from Waitrose.
I think it was French.
Bloomin' gorgeous, just on it's own on wholemeal toast.

I'm hungry, just thinking about it!

AliasGrape · 09/07/2022 17:56

Lurpak butter is just butter and comes in blocks in foil.
The spreadable stuff is blended with oil, as are most spreadable butters (I think M&S do a spreadable one with no oil in).

waitingforautumn · 09/07/2022 17:57

I like to slather butter onto crackers etc in such a thick layer, Lurpack just hits different. I'm not a snob tbh though, I like all butter. Whenever I go to my friend's house she uses exclusively Country Life and when I'm there it's the best thing ever! Meanwhile my mum is devoted to Anchor, and has been known to bring it on holiday. Brother will only buy Lurpak or Aldi's version lol (maybe it's the branding he can taste). I love when abroad in Italy/Greece or somewhere and the butter is super creamy almost with a hint of sweetness. Mmm.

Sorry to deviate from the question! I think Lurpak is particularly tasty if you like to load butter onto things. I have one friend who really doesn't care for butter and buys margarine, so if I were to ask her the same question she wouldn't understand the hype either.

And agree with someone above - you can get some really really nice fancy supermarket butters! Someone mentioned Waitrose but Morrison's also do a salted French butter that is particularly nice, definitely tastes posh and worth the extra money if you're in the mood. Obviously it wouldn't spread like Lurpak though.

waitingforautumn · 09/07/2022 18:00

This was actually really informative!

Subbaxeo · 09/07/2022 18:04

Eh? Lurpak’s mass market butter. There are far better spreadables-M&S spreadable butter or President spreadable. Both the same price as Lurpak and don’t contain oil.

JimTheShit · 09/07/2022 18:05

Love a bit of Kerrygold or Lightly Salted President butter myself, albeit the latter has a slight taste of lemon of late so we have been sticking to the former. My other half bought Lurpak recently when the supermarket was out of Kerrygold and President; I didn't realise it was a Thing.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 09/07/2022 18:05

I prefer the one that Johnny Rotten used to advertise. Country Life. And the own brand from Aldi with seasalt.

Mousemat25 · 09/07/2022 18:08

In Scotland we have Grahams, which is far nicer than Lurpak or Anchor or the totally gag Norpak.

Itisasecret · 09/07/2022 12:57

I think it tastes nicer than other butters. Ours is thrown in the fridge though. I don’t know why people would put it on display tbh.

There’s a difference between the spreadable stuff that’s rocketed in price (because of the oil) and the real stuff that does NOT go in the fridge.

You don’t put real butter in the fridge otherwise it’s unusable.

I had something similar from M & S - just lovely.

We never buy spreadable, only the real butter. Doesn’t have to be anything expensive.

LovelyDaaling · 09/07/2022 18:11

Lurpak is nothing special imo. The advertising hype has worked on some people though, hasn't it?
Just like the Belgians promoted their own chocolate as the best. Who can prove it one way or the other? And what constitutes 'best'?

fuckfuckfuck2021 · 09/07/2022 18:13

I love lurpack but have never ever called it lurpack to anyone else it's always pass the butter! I hate the price increase and tbh country life just isn't the same 😡

BanditBluey · 09/07/2022 18:16

I love lurpak, but it's too expensive, I buy it at Christmas as a treat

JellyBellyNelly · 09/07/2022 18:26

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 17:36

@JellyBellyNelly are you Lurpak?

You know I’m not.

I was interested in finding out what goes into butters and found a good website that goes into detail about different butters, how the cows are fed, how they live and Lurpak and Kerrygold along with two others were in the top group according to ingredients and the cows being grass fed and free to roam about.

It also said that Lurpak gained popularity in 2018 when it won the butter world championships.

Time40 · 09/07/2022 18:27

For proper butter I like Kerrygold, but that's probably just the influence of an Irish grandma 😁

I bought Kerrygold a few days ago, and it was so incredibly salty that I wondered if there was a problem with the production process.

JellyBellyNelly · 09/07/2022 18:28

oakleaffy · 09/07/2022 17:45

It's got rape oil in it.

No it doesn’t.

you’re confusing it with the Lurpak spread.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/07/2022 18:30

Has it taken the place of the stunt pineapple?

Ooh maybe. Do you think people keep empty packets around for Insta staging purposes?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/07/2022 18:53

I like the silver wrapper best. In fact a chuck away the horrible buttery stuff and I notice that even the wasps won't eat it.
But the wrappers... There great.

KittyMcKitty · 09/07/2022 18:59

Lurpak spread IS NOT Lurpak butter! These are the ingredients in Lurpak butter.

Just casually leave it out, next to the coffee machine, when selling a house.

ginghamstarfish · 09/07/2022 19:23

Staying at Mail's house and she uses unsalted Lurpak. İt's an odd sensation eating it because it doesn't have any taste whatsoever, just an oily feel. You might as well spread oil on your bread! I sprinkle a bit of salt on my buttered toast if she's not looking

ginghamstarfish · 09/07/2022 19:26

MİL's house!

Mommabear20 · 09/07/2022 19:33

Because it tastes amazing!!! If we could afford it I'd get it every time!
