What's so special about Lurpack?

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 12:55

I've noticed before how Lurpack seems to carry social kudos as the butter of choice for those that way inclined and now everyone is losing their shit about it selling for record prices. And people who use Lurpack as their usual butter always seem to find a way to mention it ("fetch the Lurpack from the larder will you darling?") or place it in pride of place of the breakfast table (haven't they heard of butter dishes?)...

I'm not asking about the cost of living. Obviously the price of Lurpack is indicative of the financial hardship we're all facing and like petrol prices it's utterly ridiculous and horrifying.

But...Why all the fuss about Lurpack? I've had it many times, it's fine but it's just...a butter.

Is it churned by maidens and lightly salted with their diamond-like tears?

Lurpak is the stuff in the fridge that I use for buttering baking tins etc. I have Britanny butter in the butter dish for spreading on toast, making sandwiches, adorning potatoes (jacket or new)…. surely Lurpak is a pretty basic butter….

LouisCatorze · 09/07/2022 16:03

I mistakenly bought Lurpak for the first time ever when it was on special offer a couple of months ago. I was horrified when it turned up in a tub and wasn't even 100% butter. Never again. Give me proper butter every time. I would certainly not be spending £7.20 on a tub (is that for 500gr or a kg?). I think what it is has in its favour is its spreadability throughout the year, and presumably that makes it good for baking too?

AmaryIlis · 09/07/2022 16:10

Make your own butter out of Jersey cream. Delicious!

AliasGrape · 09/07/2022 16:12

I really like Lurpak, I don’t particularly like other butters but I also hate other spreadable types.

I literally don’t give a shit what butter other people prefer. My nana loved lurpak, middle class she was not. The idea of it as a class
signifier is daft.

DarkDarkNight · 09/07/2022 16:14

I like Lurpak spreadable. I’ve tried the dupes but nothing else spreads as well straight from the fridge. I couldn't bring myself to pay £7 though, but I’ve seen it cheaper. I’m currently using Country Life because I was running low and my mum brought me some up. It’s not as nice.

Rosiesmydog · 09/07/2022 16:24

Shirgar is the only butter that I’ll use. It’s bloody gorgeous, salty, yellow creaminess 🥰🥰🥰

PenelopeGarseeya · 09/07/2022 16:25

Are some posters thinking that Lurpak only
comes in spreadable form? The spreadable one is waaaaay too soft. But actual Lurpak butter is lush. I didn’t realise it was churned differently. Growing up we had 2 butters. Anchor for my mum and Lurpak for me, could never get on with yellow butter and now I know why. My parents did get side swiped by vitalite for a while though, when everyone was obsessing over cholesterol.

Branleuse · 09/07/2022 16:25

Its a really nice butter. I get it when its on offer. Also president butter.
I like other butters too but not as much.
Im not sure what the issue is? If you prefer a different butter then get that instead. Ive never noticed any social kudos points for using lurpak.

DoNotGetADog · 09/07/2022 13:04

I think Lurpak is disgusting - it’s really pale and I think it’s not salty enough.

Butter is supposed to be yellow, not white.

Far from being a mark of high status, I look down on anyone who thinks Lurpak is nice butter…

Not so. The colour of butter depends on the season.

Angrymum22 · 09/07/2022 16:27

I have changed to an alternative from Lidl tastes better and is half the price. I can’t tell you the name, I don’t want them to run out😂

Daftasabroom · 09/07/2022 16:28

I agree with @coffeecupsandfairylights it's crap. Please all, look for the red tractor.

Skodacool · 09/07/2022 16:29

Colour of butter also varies with the cows’ feed.

LightDrizzle · 09/07/2022 16:39

Kerrygold is the King of butters.

Apart from my children, it’s the only positive legacy I have from my dickhead 1st husband.

I grew up with Lurpak and I think it lacks flavour and is somehow slightly metallic.

LadyEloise1 · 09/07/2022 16:41

Irish butter from the milk of grass fed cows.
Tesco do an own brand of it. Perfect.
or
Glenstal Irish Butter - it's a round shape.

Garron · 09/07/2022 16:42

I’m not saying this gospel, but an old neighbour of mine was completely bald from an early age. He had a real issue about if for some reason. Someone suggested that he try rubbing butter into his head at night and it might make it grow. He tried all the brands, none of them worked - except Lurpak. Within two weeks of doing it he had a full head of hair.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 09/07/2022 16:42

Lurpak spreadable is not butter, President is the only true butter end of.

Shodan · 09/07/2022 16:42

We have Lurpak, not the spreadable any more, because ds2 likes it and I don't mind it.

My first choice always used to be a Welsh butter whose name escapes me right now 😆but having Googled I think Shirgar might be the way to go.

After my diet though. There is no point in buying lovely butter if you have to scrape a measly half- teaspoonful on a crispbread.

lostintheglowofmotherhood · 09/07/2022 16:45

I think its the best of a bad bunch isn't it. Closest margarine type of thing to actual butter =)

strawberrylacey · 09/07/2022 16:46

We buy the Aldi's one, Norpak. Just as good for less

LadyHooHa · 09/07/2022 16:46

Lidl butter is better.

Blackberrybunnet · 09/07/2022 16:48

President all the way!! Even better - the one with sea salt crystals. No, wait - Beurre Isigny Ste-Mère

Butchyrestingface · 09/07/2022 16:51

ohmygash · 09/07/2022 13:13

their tv adverts are GREAT. Or they were a few years ago anyway, I don’t know if they’re still the same

Douglas and his buttery trombone... be still my heart.

Still, it wasn't exactly yesterday.

I was just going to say this - utterly delicious.

Goldenphoenix · 09/07/2022 17:01

Kerrygold all the way for me! Don't get the Lurpak buzz. Each to their own though.

President is overpriced pretentious garbage.
I bet if someone did you toast with cheap Tesco own brand butter without you knowing, you wouldn't know the difference.
