What's so special about Lurpack?

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 12:55

I've noticed before how Lurpack seems to carry social kudos as the butter of choice for those that way inclined and now everyone is losing their shit about it selling for record prices. And people who use Lurpack as their usual butter always seem to find a way to mention it ("fetch the Lurpack from the larder will you darling?") or place it in pride of place of the breakfast table (haven't they heard of butter dishes?)...

I'm not asking about the cost of living. Obviously the price of Lurpack is indicative of the financial hardship we're all facing and like petrol prices it's utterly ridiculous and horrifying.

But...Why all the fuss about Lurpack? I've had it many times, it's fine but it's just...a butter.

Is it churned by maidens and lightly salted with their diamond-like tears?

You must know a lot of very strange people. I don't know anyone who behaves like that. Why are you having breakfast at so many people's houses?

RoseOud · 09/07/2022 13:14

I hate it. Doesn't taste of anything to me.

Much prefer Anchor spreadable or the ALDI (cheaper) version. Much nicer!

Each to their own. 😊

ghostyslovesheets · 09/07/2022 13:16

Nothing - it's insipid - give me a big slab of Aldi Cornish sea salt butter any day

MrsKeats · 09/07/2022 13:11

Nothing I think French butter is far superior.

Me too

I think Lurpak is disgusting - it’s really pale and I think it’s not salty enough.

Butter is supposed to be yellow, not white.

Far from being a mark of high status, I look down on anyone who thinks Lurpak is nice butter…

All this.

I've always thought of Lurpak being a type of margarine. A good margarine but not proper butter. I hadn't realised in all these years.

Ylvamoon · 09/07/2022 13:19

Nope, it's actually handsome young lads all muscles & tanned.... otherwise no woman in their right mind would buy it at THAT price.

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/07/2022 13:25

when I was younger Lurpak was always seen as rather try hard WC. Certainly not an aspirational butter.

littlepeas · 09/07/2022 13:27

It’s nothing special. I like that French butter with big salt crystals in it.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 13:27

Nostalgia maybe? My granny had it in the 80s, it was popular then.

I don’t think it’s seem as posh. It has a particular taste I quite like although I don’t buy it regularly.

Thesearmsofmine · 09/07/2022 13:28

I don’t get the fuss over Lurpak. M&S butter with salt crystals however is amazing 😻

pbj · 09/07/2022 13:28

I’ve never heard anyone mention lurpak ever!

it’s mass produced supermarket butter - hardly an artisan product to show off about? Confused

LemonSwan · 09/07/2022 13:29

It’s the best of the supermarket butters.

Not too dull, not too rich.
Not too greasy, not too dry
A little bit salty, on the savoury side.

Overall a good day to day all rounder as I don’t buy multiple butters for multiple uses.

Don’t get me started on low fat butters or margarines or butter alternatives. Why bother honestly.

Team Aldi norpak here.

Me too, it's less than half the price and tastes the same.

PeekAtYou · 09/07/2022 13:32

Younger people use the price of Freddos when discussing inflation. Is that a better measure?

Summerwhereareyou · 09/07/2022 13:34

Something about it's make up I can't remember the details it's something about what happens when it's cooked??

gogohmm · 09/07/2022 13:34

Don't know, I use supermarket own brand salted butter, I prefer it to lurpak!

PeekAtYou · 09/07/2022 13:35

Team Aldi norpak here.

Happy with Norpak here too

gogohmm · 09/07/2022 13:36

I don't use spreadable butter, has to be real

LetHimHaveIt · 09/07/2022 13:37

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/07/2022 13:00

Distinctive packaging and a good marketing campaign team in the late 1980s, mostly.

Probably true, actually.

DorritLittle · 09/07/2022 13:42

I can't believe anyone actually does that OP. Like a lot of middle class accusations!

I have always thought it cheaper to buy butter but I liked the ads with the little Lurpak man. (If i remember correctly).

TheThreadisMildlyAmusing · 09/07/2022 13:44

Well, it has a higher ratio of butter to oil than all the other spreadable butters, which is why I buy it for sandwiches and baking, but I also use real butter for my toast, nothing like it drools.

We used to call it 'LARDpak' as kids because it was so pale.

JoandLily · 09/07/2022 13:45

Anchor butter is so much better imo

LakieLady · 09/07/2022 13:45

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 09/07/2022 13:00

Most people buy the Lurpack that doesn't go in butter dishes because it is spreadable.

To be fair as spreadable butter goes it does taste good but isn't a patch of a good quality block of butter.

This. It's the only spread-from-the-fridge stuff that actually tastes like butter.

If I was buying butter to keep in a butter dish, I'd probably get French butter. President slightly salted is lovely, but Sainsburys do a Normandy butter which is even better.

TheThreadisMildlyAmusing · 09/07/2022 13:46

And yes Op, I do put my butter in a proper butter dish, but not the Lurpack, obviously.
