What's so special about Lurpack?

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 12:55

I've noticed before how Lurpack seems to carry social kudos as the butter of choice for those that way inclined and now everyone is losing their shit about it selling for record prices. And people who use Lurpack as their usual butter always seem to find a way to mention it ("fetch the Lurpack from the larder will you darling?") or place it in pride of place of the breakfast table (haven't they heard of butter dishes?)...

I'm not asking about the cost of living. Obviously the price of Lurpack is indicative of the financial hardship we're all facing and like petrol prices it's utterly ridiculous and horrifying.

But...Why all the fuss about Lurpack? I've had it many times, it's fine but it's just...a butter.

Is it churned by maidens and lightly salted with their diamond-like tears?

Let me guess, if you prefer President and Lurpak you're also the type that eats Kettle and Tyrrell's crisps aren't you instead of good old Golden Wonder?

3luckystars · 09/07/2022 17:03

I’d love to try it, I have searched many times but never found it.

Viviennemary · 09/07/2022 17:04

Don't say its going to be the new Mulberry handbag on MN. I have five packs of Lurpak in different sizes some salted some not. It will be unbearable.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/07/2022 17:07

I'd seen mentions about the price, so just checked ... HOW MUCH???!!! Shock Shock

A kilo of Beurre d'Isigny from Costco is less than that, and at least that's the real thing (trust me and try some if you haven't already Smile)

saddowizca · 09/07/2022 17:08

We use Yeo Valley butter in a insulated butter dish and it's perfectly spreadable. Posh butter with sea salt flakes for special. 😊

ivykaty44 · 09/07/2022 17:09

No idea, we had it at school and I didn't like it back then - not tried it since.

Like president, but usually just buy bog standard butter

Ewww rapeseed oil is one of the ingredients.

Thats NOT butter ….

Exactly it's NOT pure butter.

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2022 17:09

Can’t be that posh, Wetherspoons breakfast, toast comes with Lurpack 😂

It's disgusting. I'd much rather have my dromora country gold made with butter milk 😍🤤

That is correct.

Friars23 · 09/07/2022 17:15

I prefer Lurpak to many British butters, find it creamier. However, my favourite one is a French one that you could get in Sainsburys which is no longer available. Ocado still sell it at £3 for 250g, far too expensive, sadly.

JellyBellyNelly · 09/07/2022 17:18

It’s the best of what I can get where I live and is always available unlike the French butter I prefer and can only get every few months.

Occasionally we get Kerrygold but I don’t bother with it despite it being what I was brought up on butter wise. It makes me think of my granny, she wouldn’t use anything else, and quite honestly it’s like being thumped the chest.

MingeofDeath · 09/07/2022 17:19

@ghostyslovesheets
Oh yes, beautiful stuff, Lidl's version is exactly the same. Brittany butter that Sainsbur'y sometimes do is lush as well. Lurpak is awful in comparison.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/07/2022 17:20

I think its the nicest spreadable butter tbh lovely and salty.

I’m not saying this gospel, but an old neighbour of mine was completely bald from an early age. He had a real issue about if for some reason. Someone suggested that he try rubbing butter into his head at night and it might make it grow. He tried all the brands, none of them worked - except Lurpak. Within two weeks of doing it he had a full head of hair.

RoseLunarPink · 09/07/2022 17:27

I agree, I’ve never understood this and I think it must just be marketing. I don’t like Lurpak, it seems really tasteless and oily to me (i know all butter/spreadable is mostly fat but that’s the best description somehow!) - and I am the kind of person who spends money on posh food if it seems worth it.

My favourite is Graham’s Dairy, both the spreadable and the solid butter blocks. But I think it might be a Scottish only thing. Also happy with own brands but not lurpak. I love butter so I’m always a bit disappointed if I see lurpak coming my way!

thegreylady · 09/07/2022 17:28

I only use Sainsbury’s or M&S organic butter . To me Lurpak is a bit cheap and nasty. My next favourite is Kerrygold which is pure butter.

JellyBellyNelly · 09/07/2022 17:35

Lurpak is proper butter made from the milk of grass fed cows as is Kerrygold

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 17:36

@JellyBellyNelly are you Lurpak?

It's weird - Longley Farm butter is heaven

oakleaffy · 09/07/2022 17:44

I bought some the other day, and it is nothing, nothing compared to even supermarket's own brand butter in terms of lovely flavour.
It is pale, watery, doesn't taste a patch on proper butter.

The only 'Plus' is that it spreads straight from the fridge.

Oh, and it's a scandalous price!

Blankbias · 09/07/2022 17:49

I’ve never associated Lurpak with being upmarket at all?! It’s bland and tasteless and pretty bog standard. I like the French and guernsey butters with the salt crystals. The Aldi one is excellent and reasonably priced.
