Are Tory voters that stupid?

StoneofDestiny · 07/07/2022 10:06

Listening to Tory after Tory coming on TV this morning and almost every one has mentioned Jeremy Corbyn as the fear factor in voting Labour at the next election. Seriously - is that the best argument they have got to steer the public disgust at this government's behaviour away from them?

Typical Labour voters though eh? Instead if trying to win people round to their party, they just throw mud and alienate the other voters even more.

I say this as a labour voter, we will never win with these attitudes.

I won’t be voting conservative again 🤷🏼‍♀️

Glad to hear it.

Justcallmebebes · 07/07/2022 10:29

I think anyone that calls voters stupid, is stupid. That’s how you got yourself in this mess in the first place. Calling socially conservative voters stupid. Keep going, who needs an opposition when you have smug, superior, enlightened, progressives to alienate voters.

Spectre8 · 07/07/2022 10:29

I'm not voting in anyone who doesn't know what a woman is.

thesurrealist · 07/07/2022 10:29

Yep.
The only thing more stupid than a Tory is a Tory who reads the Daily Mail.

pointythings · 07/07/2022 10:33

Calling people stupid because of how they vote is unhelpful. I have a lot of friends and family who voted Leave and voted Conservative - they're decent people, and they absolutely can be reasoned with. None of them think Brexit was a good idea now and most will either vote tactically or not at all. Engaging with people's hopes and fears is far more productive than name calling.

And I'm left wing as fuck.

Stellaris22 · 07/07/2022 10:35

Stupid, no. Self serving and caring about themselves more than the public, yes.

Makes me angry seeing all these journalists go on about how awful Johnson is, worst PM ever etc. Journalists and the media are disgusting, they are hugely to blame for him getting into power in the first place.

All those who still claim that ‘Corbyn would have been worse’ are incredibly blinkered.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 07/07/2022 10:35

The usual blowhards out in force this morning. Calling voters stupid is only going to offend. Or was that the whole point?

I don't vote Tory, never have but who, in your obviously superior opinion, is worthy of voting in, hmm? They all talk a good game - before they get into power. Then what?

I'm dying to know what the right answer is...?

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 07/07/2022 10:36

SteamingHind · 07/07/2022 10:11

Ironically, I blame Labour for all this shit.

In 2010, they picked the wrong Miliband. If David had been elected leader, I'm sure they'd have won 2015. No referendum, no Brexit, no Al Johnson and his comedy "Boris" alter ego. None of the shite we all have to deal with now.

Agree completely, it was the lurch to the left that ruined Labour's chances.

NotthatKindofpickle · 07/07/2022 10:38

Yes. Either that or they are racist. Or they just want to see someone less privileged than them get a good kicking.

siblingrevelryagain · 07/07/2022 10:38

Blaming Labour/Milliband/Corbyn for the position we're in now is like blaming an abuse victim for choosing the wrong partner. The person committing the crime is to blame in that situation, and the shower of shits in Government right now (and the enablers of the last 12 years) are responsible for where we are now.

And those who say they wouldn't vote for Starmer because he's 'bland', but would have voted by default to elect the party who advocated for Rwanda/banning protest and free speech/removing us from the terms of the ECHR/dodgy PPE contracts/Russian meddling etc are deluded.

I have no sympathy for Tory voters or politicians acting surprised that it has turned out like this - no one was gas lit or mis-led as he has been totally transparent from the start but people still held their nose and voted, whether it was because of Brexit or some other reason.

He hasn't got any calls right. We would have been in a better position now post-pandemic if it had been handled better from the start, if we hadn't allowed for massive fraud which has left us financially and morally bankrupt, and if we hadn't imposed sanctions on ourselves through Brexit

Is this the best way to welcome people who have admitted mistakes and want to join you? What was the purpose of this?

Exactly. I'm a swing voter, I've voted for pretty much all the parties in previous elections depending on policies at the time and have put a lot of thought and research into my vote whether that is Tory, Lib Dem, Green or Labour.

Calling Tory voters idiots and name calling is not going to win hearts and minds, and I agree that the previous poster that said the decline of Labour started with Ed Milliband. Loads of traditional Conservatives have been absolutely aghast with what's been happening to the party under Boris Johnson. It's toxic and does not represent me at all.....as someone that has voted Conservative in the past.

stuckdownahole · 07/07/2022 10:44

Butterbean9 · 07/07/2022 10:13

It's like a cult for idiots who don't care about anyone but themselves.
The lack of critical thinking is astounding.

And yet this "cult of idiots" have just managed to get rid of someone who would have lost them the next election. They will find a more palatable leader and therefore be in a strong position to defend their majority.

Conversely, a blind, deaf and dumb man could have told you that Jeremy Corbyn was going to lose Labour the 2019 election. But the only person that came forward to challenge him was a nonentity, Owen Smith, who never was and never will be the answer to anything more than a quiz question.

Ha, ha, stupid Tories, laughs Mumsnet. We all know better! And the stupid Tories carry on winning elections.

pistachi0nuts · 07/07/2022 10:46

Yes they are that stupid. Either stupid, racist or greedy. It always bothers me...the parties, they are so different, they have fundamentally different core values. How do people flit from one to the other so easily. I don't think labour are perfect by any means, but I could never, never, ever vote Tory as a matter of principle and what they stand behind.

PutYourBackIntoit · 07/07/2022 10:47

I would never vote green, but I understand why someone would.

I would never vote for the snp but I understand why someone would.

I can have interesting, enlightening, conversations with people who vote differently to me.

Has listening become such a rare skill, that the only possible reason you can think of that someone would vote differently to you is that they are stupid?

Makes me mad that we find ourselves living in a polarised, twitter driven society. Get talking, listening. Improve on your art of conversation.

My social media is full of this. Along with 'how can anyone working class vote Tory? How thick can they be?' Always have a good laugh at these posts Grin

MissBridgetJones · 07/07/2022 10:47

stackhead · 07/07/2022 10:20

I'm a fairly (apparently rare) swing voter. I've voted Tory, Labour, Lib Dem and Green over the course of my voting history.

I voted Tory for the first Corbyn election because yes, I didn't agree with Corbyns policies. It wasn't about the man, it was about the policies. I read the manifesto didn't think they were detailed properly and voted accordingly.

For what it's worth I voted Labour in the last election (still Corbyn).

Don't lump us all in the same boat. Some of us are still capable of nuance.

What she said. I am also a swinger. My local council is LibDem.

JC was a terrifying prospect.

Somanysocks · 07/07/2022 10:49

Nope, being called names and insulted will never, ever, change my mind to vote like you.

GreenLunchBox · 07/07/2022 10:51

NotthatKindofpickle · 07/07/2022 10:38

This

I think we're stuck with the Tories forever now for this reason

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 10:51

Labour will never win another election until the party and their voters stop treating anyone who falls off the proscribed script, including those inside and outside of their own party, voters who have never voted for them and voters who gave up on them, like utter shit.

You are doing the heavy lifting for the Tory party. They are the most obnoxious party we have known but it is true to say that people will vote for those they hate but not for those who hate them.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 10:52

I think if you're only now surprised and dismayed by who Johnson is and didn't realise he was also that in 2019 you're incredily stupid, yes.

VladmirsPoutine · 07/07/2022 10:53

Yes but Corbyn has been vindicated. When he spoke for example of universal broadband people thought he'd lost their minds. A short while later during covid lockdowns turns out universal broadband wasn't such a shit idea after all. Same thing with the Tories having to be bullied in to feeding school kids during the holidays - one of them even suggested that some parents would exchange food vouchers for crack. The reason why A LOT of people in power don't want Corbyn close to power is because he believes in equity for all. The tories are really only the party for you if you're wealthy, elite and occasionally white. I think the Tories will also win at the next election because one thing consistent about the Brits is that they can't imagine a different future - they're wedded to universal suffering.

Beefcurtains79 · 07/07/2022 10:54

Smugly calling people that vote differently to you stupid, has worked out really well in the past few years hasn’t it?
I despair.
