To hope Johnson doesn't resign?

LonelyPlanetGirI · 05/07/2022 18:51

Because if he clings on until the next GE, he'll be completely unelectable and we'll be rid of the Tories.

I'm hoping he digs his heels in just like he always has, even though by rights he should be fucking off with his tail between his legs.

Would you like a signed photo corenettoninja? you do seem awfully interested in what I say and what I am.

'You’re talking to someone with a very Boris-esq world view that means they’re never in the wrong'

Oh I'm sometimes wrong. Not often, granted.

Touchy touchy.

Removing johnson because he's unfit for office and then letting him stick around for 3 months is so patently ridiculous that I'm sure they'll decide to do it.

I’m not so sure. Apparently that speech has incensed a number of Tory MPs. Hopefully they’ll finish the job off properly now.

God, that's worrying.

With all the drama I hadn't stopped to think about it, but Johnson's actually a real security risk now isn't he? Even if he handed over the keys to No 10 today. He's outside the tent pissing in.

He'll cuddle up to whoever best serves his ego and pays his child maintenance bills. Now that he's no longer in a position to play at being Churchill, his opportunistic support for Ukraine may vanish as the morning mist.

Putin is genuinely extremely clever when it comes to manipulating people (though thick as a brick when it comes to believing his own PR), and will be on this like a fly on shit.

Yep.

I do think Johnson is genuinely angry with Putin now and opposes the invasion of Ukraine... but he was balls deep before that. And I wonder if part of the anger isn't because Putin invading has put Johnson in a more difficult position: this isn't what was supposed to happen, Putin was never meant to go this far. Russian interests were only meant to go as far as supporting Brexit and throwing some cash around.

Exactly. What if he does properly resign (don't think he has yet), what's to stop him visiting Ukraine anyway?
Or feeding secrets here and there.
Or gathering info for a book

I don't trust him one little bit.

I think Chris Bryant is on it. He won't let this Lebedev link fade. BJ did what Patel did with Israel. Break the Ministerial Code (not that the MC hasn't been debased since BJ has been PM...)

On another subject... there were very few supporters out there listening to his resig / not resig speech.
Wife, baby, Dorries, JRM, think I saw, other random MInisters not well known. Oh... and Steve Bray playing 'Bye Bye Boris' with an army of supporters!

Penguinwaddles · 07/07/2022 14:56

So bizarre that a disgraced PM, who has just resigned as leader of the Conservative party, is now busy appointing a new cabinet. If candidates had integrity at all, they would not accept any jobs offered!

DowningStreetParty · 07/07/2022 15:03

He’s not resigned as PM, he just says he will later. Can’t trust him to do it. Nothing’s really changed today has it?

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 15:06

The Mirror is reporting that Johnson will host a lavish wedding with Carrie at Chequers while he still has access to it this summer.

Couldn't make it up.

Provenceinthesummer · 07/07/2022 15:12

And you think it’s been a shit show to date?

You haven’t seen anything yet.

There will be a bloodbath choosing the next leader - and when they finally do….watch out.

Austerity with bells and whistles. Forget about the levelling up - that’s dead and buried. It will all be about tax cuts and then a bonfire of NHS/education/benefits funding followed by the social care funding. Finished.

The next leader first and foremost will be delivering for the Conservative party, and they need to make Maggie look like a hipster socialist in order to have any hope of consoling the party.

Boris wasn’t kicked out over some cake or the pincher character - he was kicked out because the Tories did not recognise any conservatism at all in what he was delivering- and he was taxing their constituents to an inch of their lives. This is pure self interest and the new leader will need to prove they are ready to slash and bloody burn 🔥

balalake · 07/07/2022 15:12

The wedding party does seem a plausible reason above all others.

Though I would hope no-one would attend. How long before Carrie is 40 and therefore Mr Johnson will look elsewhere?

Roussette · 07/07/2022 15:14

The possible Chequers wedding party makes me incandescent with rage. It's just taking the piss isn't it.

I pray he is out within days which will put paid to that piss take.

As he announces his resignation, Boris Johnson's net favourability hits a new low of -53

Favourable: 19% (-2 from 24-26 Jun)
Unfavourable: 72% (n/c)

Theresa May's lowest point - a week before resigning - was -49. Jeremy Corbyn bottomed out at -55.

It certainly explains why she was smiling beatifically earlier. She’s his last chance @balalake, he’s got fuck all to offer any younger, more glamorous model now.

'fgs Janiie back up your points with reality not fantasy events that didn’t happen. You’re repeating propaganda that isn’t even backed up by actual real life events mate.'

Mate Grin

Well of course my points aren't backed up by real life events as Labour weren't in power throughout the pandemic, thank God. If they had have been they'd have has us in lockdown longer as evidenced by Starmer's repeated whines for further and longer restrictions.

@JaniieJones I have it worked out. Thank you for your persistence.

The reason that it was perfectly acceptable for Boris to have a birthday party during lockdown is because the rules existed because Starmer was whinging on and wanted us to be in lockdown forever. If only Boris had been in charge he would have been able to remove the restrictions in time for his birthday and have another spike in cases just like all the other times Boris removed the restrictions to try and boost his popularity.

So Mr Shameless de Grifter Me-First is hanging on to the keys to No 10 and Chequers for ANOTHER FUCKING PARTY?

Yeah, makes sense.

Did you miss that one?

I can't recall ever posting the polls tbh. I'm sure one of my avid fans will be searching as we speak in desperate attempts to prove me wrong.

Cornettoninja · 07/07/2022 16:48

desperate attempts to prove you wrong? You mean those times you’re actually proved wrong because facts are facts 🤷‍♀️

A brilliant and dignified speech. Wet weasels like Ellwood and Baker who have been trying to oust him for months should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, it might have been nice if he had apologised for repeatedlysending his colleagues out to lie for him to try to cover up his appointment of a known sex abuser to a very sensitive post And maybe one or two of the other obvious lies which led so many of his colleagues to realise (finally) that he is wholly lacking in integrity and honesty.

Which reminds me, @JaniieJones: you've been asked before if you thought Johnson's conduct around the whole Pincher affair was OK, but I don't think I've seen an answer. Any chance of one now?

Given the mess everything is in I would expect a GE. Which the Conservatives I think would hope to lose.

Labour aren’t going to magically get us out of this shit. The world is having similar problems. So we are going to go through 4-5 years of pain which will be associated with Labour then just as the tide is turning and everyone has blamed Labour for losing their homes and people starving on the streets. The Conservatives rife to the rescue for another 15 years.

Be careful about what you wish for because it looks like you might just get it.

Thing is: A lot of people seem perfectly capable of blaming Labour for the mess we're in ANYWAY, despite the fact that they haven't been in power for twelve years, didn't initiate the Brexit referendum, didn't back Leave in it, weren't in charge of the Covid (non-)response and based their 2019 manifesto on policies (renationalisation of utilities) which - regardless of whether you agree or disagree about the broader philosophy of them - would have largely protected UK citizens from the current cost of living crisis in the same way mixed-economy social democracies on the continent have protected theirs.

If the Tories can have power AND not even be held responsible for the catastrophic consequences of how badly they exercise it, then why would they need to relinquish power?

'You're very sad he's gone aren't you'

Not 'sad' no as I'm a grown up but as it is consuming the news it is hard not to have an opinion.

As he said no one is dispensable. His party have stabbed him in the back whipped up by the constant media hysteria and smears.

If you watch gmb on a morning we've had 2yrs of them tutting and criticising him, yet smarming round Nicola and Sir Beer for exactly the same issues! Perhaps we should stop general elections and just let telly presenters pick?

"The problem with UK politics is that the media doesn't sufficiently support the Tory party".

Jesus, now I've actually heard it all.

SueSaid · 07/07/2022 17:19

"The problem with UK politics is that the media doesn't sufficiently support the Tory party".

'Jesus, now I've actually heard it all.'

Who said that? 🙄. What I actually said is the media treat them differently. Sex pests in the snp, so what. Sex pest in the Conservatives sack BoJo. Ditto cakegate and beergate. They sycophanticly creep around Ange and SirBeer whilst hissing at Conservative ministers like they're stupid.
