To hope Johnson doesn't resign?

Because if he clings on until the next GE, he'll be completely unelectable and we'll be rid of the Tories.

I'm hoping he digs his heels in just like he always has, even though by rights he should be fucking off with his tail between his legs.

Lefty media?

He enjoyed the rightwing media support and rewarded them in bungs and peerages.

'He had a great opportunity to take the country somewhere as he was so popular and had people hanging on his every word.'

Yes. Except the lefty media who wanted to punish him for brexit and get rid.

How convenient to blame the 'lefty media' when he was the architect of his own downfall and he has many news outlets still supporting him. You can't shut down different opinions, just because they don't align with his fans.

Thank the lord he's gone. I have no idea what will happen now and whether he's gone gone, but the country needs repairing

Interesting that he's gone so strongly for the betrayal narrative, obviously knowing how it endured with Thatcher. Trouble is that only endured for her because people saw her as principled in the first place.

I said earlier (this or another thread) how I felt his Ukraine bid in his eyes was his saviour as that's what restored thatchers popularity. Before that she was struggling as we also had high inflation.

I also think that's where the 3 terms bit came from. Because after Falklands restored faith in her that's how long she remained.

But love or thought Thatcher and her policies you are absolutely right - the biggest different is she had honestly and integrity. She stood by her morals and made them load and clear. She'd never have flip flopped about depending on what she thought she should say.

'No, I never watch GMB.'

Oh stop being so sniffy. Ditto BBC and sky news Grin

I genuinely was not being sniffy. I can't cope with Richard Madeley AKA Alan Partridge so don't watch it, that's all.

There's left and right wing media.

The Mail had 10 days of Keirs beer whilst publishing great things about Johnson.

But as much as their is media bias both sides - the country aren't as stupid as Johnson thought they were.

If you don't credit people with the same intelligence as you you dig your own grave.

Roussette · 07/07/2022 13:07

Yes. I listened to an interview with his right hand woman who worked with him when he was London Mayor. She admitted that no two days were the same, and that it was quite 'exciting' but said that she had enormous problems with being sent out to make a statement on his behalf, and then next morning he'd change tack and she'd look a fool.

She'd challenge him about this and say 'you cannot do this, it makes me look stupid'. His answer was 'don't worry about it. It's just words'

So he hasn't learnt from back then. Never will. He should never have been PM.

WhatdoImean · 07/07/2022 13:15

Amuses me sometimes with the Hero worship Boris gets from some posters.... it is almost as if "He cannot fail; he can only BE failed" - in other words, it is ALWAYS someone else's fault (Lawyers/remainers/lefty media/wets/the voters/sunspots), never his actions.

It would all have been fine, if only the it had not been for that pesky media NOTICING something he did...

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 13:17

Removing johnson because he's unfit for office and then letting him stick around for 3 months is so patently ridiculous that I'm sure they'll decide to do it.

That doesn't surprise me his comments about words.

I've often said to Johnson politics is just semantics

"It would all have been fine, if only the it had not been for that pesky media NOTICING something he did...'

Beergate/cakegate. Pincher/Patrick Grady. Russia/China donations. There's not much in it all, except BJ was responsible for Brexit so the media wanted rid. Oh and Cummings had a massive axe to grind.

If Starmer is fined and resigns (still very possible) we'll all be waiting on tenterhooks for you to say 'ok, I was wrong about this'.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2022 13:27

The media that told us all about the great brexit benefits we could expect?

Indeed.

In the industry I work in, if we get so much of a sniff of a 'bad actor', they are instantly shut down across all systems before they even know about it and then (metaphorically speaking, we work remotely) escorted from the building with haste.

Why on earth would you allow somebody who is so clearly inept and potentially dangerous stay in one of the most powerful positions in the western world? And more importantly, how on earth is government supposed to function when so many have expressed their distrust?

WhatdoImean · 07/07/2022 13:39

As noted - BJ was fined about the parties.... Actual criminal offence as a sitting PM, Starmer has not been charged with anything....

Roussette · 07/07/2022 13:40

Just as an aside... the Lebedev meeting where he assured the Liaison Committee yesterday that he had informed his officials of his meeting. (with an ex KGB Agent)
No he fucking didn't. FCDO records have been checked. So even yesterday he lied. He's a security risk. Hopefully this will seal his fate.

Totally agree. His sense of entitlement doesn't allow for accepting responsibility for his own actions.

The whole thing with Starmer was a pathetic attempt at equivalence from the start. The Tories and their media friends have no qualms about how low they'll stoop.

This.

The man is a pathological liar, to the extent that I honestly don't think he can even help it. If Johnson told me it was raining, I'd look out of the window to check.

Given that international relations are tense ATM, do we want to take that risk?

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 13:50

Interestingly on twitter the #BackBoris bots, which had been endemic since partygate, have almost all buggered off in silence. Time is money.

Oh yeah, can't blame the paymasters there. No point in carrying it on now.

Ah, see @SleeplessInEngland you think Janiie would then recognise that a person with integrity would resign. She wouldn’t. She’d think Starmer is a chump if he resigns and a hypocrite if he doesn’t. There’s never going to be a situation where she’ll have to reassess a previous opinion.

You’re talking to someone with a very Boris-esq world view that means they’re never in the wrong and are baffled why other people do the right thing to their own detriment when they can just mould reality to fit what they want.

*snorts

it does rather leave those who were doing it out of faith and loyalty hanging doesn’t it?

Would you like a signed photo corenettoninja? you do seem awfully interested in what I say and what I am.

Oh I'm sometimes wrong. Not often, granted.

God, that's worrying.

With all the drama I hadn't stopped to think about it, but Johnson's actually a real security risk now isn't he? Even if he handed over the keys to No 10 today. He's outside the tent pissing in.

He'll cuddle up to whoever best serves his ego and pays his child maintenance bills. Now that he's no longer in a position to play at being Churchill, his opportunistic support for Ukraine may vanish as the morning mist.

Putin is genuinely extremely clever when it comes to manipulating people (though thick as a brick when it comes to believing his own PR), and will be on this like a fly on shit.
