Should a male teacher have done this?

During a residential school trip, enter a girls' shared dorm to wake them up?
To my mind it's a safeguarding issue, and there was also a female teacher on the trip who could have done it.
I wanted to seek others' opinions before raising it.
Thanks.

And this is why a lot of teachers aren't prepared to staff residential school trips any longer. The paperwork and risk assessments and organisation take hours before hand.

Bad enough being away from your own home and family for several days for no extra pay. Bad enough dealing with daft kids who are pushing the rules, giggling half the night, falling out with each other over 'rooming' issues.

And then the parents and the complaints instead of any sign of gratitude or thanks for the effort you've made to give pupils a different experience.

It's a thankless bloody task.

Whatabloodycircus · 03/07/2022 18:48

Is this a joke question?!
If you're concerned about a teacher going in to a dorm them you must feel there is an issue anyway. If not then please do get a grip.

He entered a room of sleeping girls on his own. That is clearly ‘doing something wrong’

Smileyaxolotl1 · 03/07/2022 18:50

‘And this is why a lot of teachers aren't prepared to staff residential school trips any longer.’

becuause they are not allowed to walk into teenage girls bedrooms when they are sleeping? Or because they are called out on their behaviour if they do?

Perky1 · 03/07/2022 18:50

Male teacher walking into girls dorm is absolutely not ok with me. It’s a private female space and teacher should respect that. Female teacher should have checked the girls were awake.

It’s opinions like this that put male teacher’s permanently on edge for anything they say or do. It’s really sad and completely unnecessary. I’m sure the same wouldn’t be said for a female teacher waking a group of boys. Unless you have any other details that go beyond ‘went in and woke them up’ then to answer your question- no, you have no grounds to report. It would be sad if you did, as it would have to be taken seriously and he would be questioned over something that sounds to me to be completely innocent and just doing his job as someone leading a trip.

Bard6817 · 03/07/2022 18:52

Kids sometimes have a phone the parents don’t know about.

I think the OP has an agenda.

NattyNatashia · 03/07/2022 18:52

I don't really understand the obsession with Male/Boy, Female/Girl thing. I think okay for either/any gender to knock on the door, perhaps open a little to shout through but inappropriate to go in unannounced if there is a chance they are changing regardless of gender. It's never a question of of how many men vs. women are sexual predators it only matters if an individual teacher is regardless of gender or sexual orientation. In this particular case it sounds like it would be worth raising to clarify from multiple witnesses.

Sylvaniandream · 03/07/2022 18:53

Totally unacceptable. 100%. Knock and shout from outside and wait for a response, yes. Open the door? NO NO NO. And as a female teacher, I would NOT enter a boy's dorm unless there was a full on emergency. I wouldn't go into a girls' dorm either to wake them up..... A sceduled tidiness check, or to give out medication, or to sort out an issue, yes. But to wake them up? Still a knock from outside and a shout, possibly open the door after checking they're all decent to make sure they're up, but I still wouldn't go right in. Totally wrong. I would complain immediately. What else does this teacher think is acceptable????

AuntMargo · 03/07/2022 19:00

oh for goodness sake so bloody what - they were asleep not in the bloody showers !!!

Use your brain. They may not have been asleep. They may have been dressing or doing anything.

Are you sure your name isn’t Aunt Lydia?

I think it sounds like you are seeking an excuse to start something that does not need to be started. He hasn't done anything wrong, so I disagree that any action should be taken.

He has done something wrong. How many times has it been said on this thread?
He's breached safeguarding procedures.

They were this where they !!! He obviously wouldn't have done it would he another man hater I see

sugardonutnojam · 03/07/2022 19:07

OP has an alternative agenda, daughter causing hassle at school and taking this angle which is appalling. The fact OP hasn’t clarified how the teacher woke the children up makes me think her daughter is just like herself, telling half a story. YABU

No. Decent male teachers are not "permanently on edge". I work with many men who have managed to have long and successful careers while still observing the basic rules. It's not difficult. Just follow guidelines.

ThistleTits · 03/07/2022 19:08

@mycatisannoying
I have done many residentials with young people, although in a non formal education environment.
I would not be comfortable with a male team member doing this, I doubt the male staff members would be happy doing it either.
Yes, bad judgement and I would perhaps have a word with head of year.
May need some training around boundaries.

Yes, probably they did. On an anonymous board like this, you have no idea who the posters really are.

CupidStunt22 · 03/07/2022 19:09

No wonder so many male predators get away with their behaviour with so many grown women making excuses for their lack of boundaries and poor decisions.
Shame on you.

Kerensa70 · 03/07/2022 19:10

I think if it doesn’t sit right with you, discuss in a measured way with school. Having been on primary residential trips, it’s an unspoken agreement that females take care of the girls dorm, makes the boys. Out of context I can see how you might be concerned. Hopefully the school can add some context here. Also pitting children against each other, that definitely needs some explanation!

ManyBooksLittleTime · 03/07/2022 19:10

Just tell the school and let them question the girls. They will get to the bottom of everything very easily and be professional about it. Stop the rumour mongering.

Well, I did a bet with myself on how long it would take for someone to come along and ask this specific question.

So you knew you had double standards.
