Abortion is fine but euthanasia isn't??

With all the discussion on abortion at the moment, and the clear view from the majority is people that they're a good thing, AIBU to wonder why we still don't allow for legal euthanasia of terminally ill people in this country (England)?

My personal view on abortion is that is a terrible practise that makes me terrible sad to think about and a resource I would never use, BUT that it should be legal for woman whose views differ to mine, to allow them to make their own decisions about their bodies and lives.

It baffles me then, to think that while we are fighting for woman's rights on this subject, that we aren't also fighting for the rights of every person who is or will suffer terribly as a result of terminal illnesses, not to mention the trauma for their families who have to watch them deteriorate in health knowing that it's only going to get worse and often times won't get to be there with them at the end.

Would you be in agreement to make euthanasia legal?

If someone wants to die let them I think. We keep humans alive in conditions it’s seen cruel to keep animals in.

Not really, they keep lab animals in pain their whole lives.

Yes, I think euthanasia should be legal, and I can definitely imagine circumstances where I would want to avail of it myself.

Euthanasia will be legal. It is inevitable that in a 1984 world there will be unforeseen consequences when this law comes to pass.
When I think about their end of life I know it will be tough and the reality of it will be harder then I can imagine. I don't believe in wanting to beat death at all cost, force feeding etc.
Palliative care is key, and excellent sedation if needed.
Both my parents had near death experiences multiple times due to illness. Yet I cannot imagine my parents asking for it. I want them around me for as long as possible.
I cannot relate abortion with Euthanasia. Some weaponize sanctity of life when they actually have no respect whatsoever for the lives of women when in comes to abortion. I believe the foetus has rights but never above the rights of a full fledge human being.

I have to say I’m very thankful that I live in Switzerland, because euthanasia is legal.

@jrc1071

What do people in Switzerland think about this case?

I would like to do the same when I decide I want to die.

We are OK with it because it’s the right thing to do. The person decided they no longer wanted to live, they are suffering and that should be honored.

@jrc1071

That is so amazing. I really hope that we can get to that position in the UK.

Unfortunately, there are too many MPs who want to impose their sadistic religious beliefs on others and want people to suffer for weeks and months.

So many MPs including Ruth Davidson only changed their minds once they saw their loved ones suffer. I like her, but I can't understand why it took personal experience for her to see the light. Surely, decent human being wants another human being to suffer? How could she have ignored the plights of all the people who have gone to court to change the law?

As I said upthread, another MP only changed his mind when his own father blamed him for his own end of life suffering because the MP had voted against
assisted dying.

I assume that you had a referendum rather than leave it for your parliament to decide?

Did you have religious MPs who were opposed to it?

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/07/2022 10:13

*no decent human being

Also do many people in Switzerland do what this lady did? I assume that it takes years for doctors to agree to it?
