Sick of the push for Scottish independence

I keep seeing on the news that Nicola Sturgeon is pushing for another referendum and I just don’t get it. If she doesn’t get the answer she wants this time can she push for another in a few years? I just find it disgusting that half the country are struggling badly for things like food/electricity/petrol and she wants to spend millions pushing for something that she wants, that the majority voted against a few years ago? Am I missing something?

If polling suggested most 16 year olds were likely to vote for the Tories, I seriously doubt the SNP would have been so keen for them to be voting.

Stroopwaffels · 02/07/2022 14:48

Yanbu. I’m Scottish and sick to the back teeth of the snp and their neverendums which are toxic and divisive.

j712adrian · 02/07/2022 14:53

and here was me thinking "taking back control" was all the rage.

Or did that only apply to the English?

ItchyBit · 02/07/2022 15:09

Can you imagiine if there had been a no vote over Europe in 2016 and the Tories proposed another vote in 2025? How would that have gone down?

This. Respect both outcomes and be consistent; whilst making a note never to decide important issues by Referenda again.

Ironically the mainstream Tory position was to support a Remain vote in the EU Referendum. The fact they embraced the Leave outcome anyway is interesting.

Listening to Blackford talking about the voice of the people - the vote happened it was No

why can he dismiss this answer from the people so readily

Cheeserton · 03/07/2022 12:50

Sorry, but no. I'm no fan of Sturgeon or the SNP, but they have been strongly elected on a referendum manifesto. Also, Brexit. A true 'once in a generation' fuck up that completely changes the landscape and was sold on pure lies and xenophobia. Like it or not, people want to have the choice overall and they have been clear about this since Brexit at the ballot box.

onlywhenidream · 03/07/2022 14:18

"Strongly elected " with 45% of vote / so hardly a majority view then

Badlifeday · 03/07/2022 15:47

do you imagine governments normally get in with over 50% of the votes of the public?

Because it was the wrong answer

Every election since then the SNP have won a majority and there campaign is always on independence. People tend to forget that if we get independence it doesn’t mean that nicola sturgeon will rule forever, other parties will come into play.

Babdoc · 03/07/2022 16:49

Cheeserton, SNP supporters presumably wanted Brexit. If they had won their 2014 independence referendum, Scotland would have been out of the EU immediately as a new country, with no quick route back in. So in a very real sense, Brexit was what they voted for.

No

But I object to people talking about majority as if it's what the majority of people actually voted for

Absolutely correct. In fact, the SNP might not exist at all.

Frazzledmummy123 · 03/07/2022 23:28

I am Scottish and fed up of it. All we've heard about since 2014 is 'we are the 45' from all those wanting independence. Well what about the 55 (majority) who said no? So much for a democracy, hardly a democracy if they are getting another chance.

Sarahzb · 03/07/2022 23:51

Well the tories give no single fuck about anyone. Bankrupt idelogy Liars and cheats. An as for that person with the blond hair. Well I told everyone - especially the students not to vote for him after the highwire idiocy. They ignored me. Oh well. Hee. You reap what you sow.

“Hardly a democracy is they are getting another chance”

Wait til you find out that politicians get another chance to win an election at least every five years !

Would you think it was more democratic if we just had an election and then had to live with the result for 20 years?

I don’t think the ‘voice of the people’ is listened to in that case

Unless it’s Brexit then even Labour listen

DdraigGoch · 04/07/2022 13:15

Polls are snapshots in time - there’s no other area where we would expect politicians to pack up their bags and go home just because the polls indicate they will not succeed.

How many letters were written to the 1922 Committee on the back of opinion polling?

j712adrian · 07/07/2022 00:40

You might have noticed today that England is incapable of governing itself, never mind Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Did everything grind to a halt because cabinet has gone into meltdown.....nope!
The reason why is because what runs the govt machine is more then just 12 people sat around a table.

The Scottish govt are also pretty quiet as they have their own sex pest which they covered for 6 years and their head lawyer refused to sign off on their planned bill which is the reason its going striaght to court! Its hardly a glowing week for SNP so they have kept quiet mostly as they are guilty of the exact same thing covering up sexual harassment for their mates!

j712adrian · 07/07/2022 07:07

……. apart from the fact there’s no ministers left in England to do any business…… um, this is fine.

j712adrian · 07/07/2022 08:35

.... and now No10 won't pick up the phone and answer Radio4, and Braverman hasn't been sacked yet for telling Big Dog to go publicly before he's put down. If that's not English non-functioning government at it's finest, I'm not sure what is. As it is, they only serve the South East. Still, there are still Johnson's pervy mates left.
