To complain about cleaner walking in on me naked

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:20

Staying in a chain hotel, Western Europe, 8am. I'm up but also naked in bed, having a coffee. Someone knocks on the door, I ignore it, not sure if it's my door or someone else's. Then the door opens and a man calls out something, I dive under my sheets and I think I shouted out 'there's someone in here', so the door closes. I throw some clothes on, go in the corridor and say to the guy that check out is 11, and also angrily 'don't come in my room, what the hell!' I didn't have a 'do not disturb ' sign on my door, but then I wouldn't expect to have to use it if I'm checking out before 11. AIBU to complain?

So you ignored the knock and didn’t have a do no disturb sign on?

he also didn’t see you….. and you were up?

i would say something yes but it all sounds very dramatic

QuebecBagnet · 25/06/2022 07:23

8am is far too early for cleaners to be letting themselves in. I’d certainly leave feedback.

ginislife · 25/06/2022 07:23

A bit of a none event ? Happens all the time. Yes, you'd think they'd know who's already checked out and start there but they didn't see anything, you stopped them coming in. Get over it.

rnsaslkih · 25/06/2022 07:23

I do think it’s weird that he entered on the day of checkout, 3 hours beforehand.

Darbs76 · 25/06/2022 07:23

You can complain, I doubt that anything would happen. Can you not lock the door so they can’t come in? Most hotel doors have an option to put a chain or something on. I always do that

Mally100 · 25/06/2022 07:24

Yabu, entirely your fault for not having a sign on the door. He knocked, waited and called out and then immediately shut the door. You were rude to shout at him.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/06/2022 07:24

You should have had the DND sign on your door, that's literally what it's for. Some of them say "please clean" so you can flip it over on your way out and let the staff know it's ok to come in.

He knocked, and you didn't answer, so he thought your room was empty, therefore it was ok to come and clean it. He was just doing his job.

Fimofriend · 25/06/2022 07:24

So now you have learned that the rude rule many mumsnetters live by in which they refuse to acknowledge someone knocking on their door is idiotic. Congrats. You were fully to blame.

Porcupineintherough · 25/06/2022 07:25

You didn't have a do not disturb sign on your door. He knocked, you ignored him. then he checked. He went away when you let him know you were there.

This is 100% on you.

AlexClo · 25/06/2022 07:25

Why would you complain? You didn't have a do not disturb sign, and you didn't answer when the cleaner knocked?
He only opened the door and closed it again when you made your presence known?
It's pretty pathetic to try and get a poor cleaner in trouble for this 😅

girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 07:26

You could have just responded to the knock and you didn't need to be rude to him for doing his job.

JohannSebastianBach · 25/06/2022 07:26

You should have put the dnd sign up. Failing that called out that you were in there.

Londonrach1 · 25/06/2022 07:26

Yabu. Door was knocked on, you no sign on door. Come on grow up ...sign on door next time

TidyDancer · 25/06/2022 07:27

The time is on the early side but this is the only bit you might be reasonable about. The rest is your fault and he didn't do anything wrong. I appreciate you're probably embarrassed but don't make a complaint about someone because of that.

custardbear · 25/06/2022 07:28

Don't complain as he's doing his job. He's got two things to keep the barrier shut, a sign and a knock, it's not his fault if these both didn't work because you didn't do them
FWIW loads of people stay in hotels and leave really early for work, cleaners start really early for this reason, getting the vacated rooms out of the way before checkout max time when many others leave

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/06/2022 07:28

Why didn't you have the deadline lock on?

CRbear · 25/06/2022 07:28

i think you ignored all the social norms - putting a do not disturb sign up and answering a knock on the door - followed the social norms, no sign, knocked first, called out, left when it was clear someone was in there. I think you got this one wrong not him.

carefullycourageous · 25/06/2022 07:29

You created the issue by not communicating, with with the DND sign or when the door was knocked.

You would therefore be completely unreasonable to complain.

Justcallmebebes · 25/06/2022 07:29

He didn't walk in on you though did he? He knocked, you ignored him, he opened the door, you screamed at him and he shut it. This is on you, not him. Poor blokes just doing his job and it's a pretty thankless one too

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 25/06/2022 07:30

He knocked, you didn't answer. There was no DND sign on. This is on you. You could have gone down to breakfast. You had an opportunity to say you were there and didn't. Why would you complain and blame some else for your mistake?

Memyselfandfood · 25/06/2022 07:30

So you didn’t have the dnd on?
how was he supposed to know you were there?
it was your fault and you were rude to someone simply doing their job.

EinsteinaGogo · 25/06/2022 07:32

It's a non-event, OP.

Hotel cleaners knock on the door to see if anyone is in.

No answer, and they'll open the door.

You called out, and the cleaner left.

I don't see why you ran out and shouted at the cleaner. They were doing their job.

BalloonsAndWhistles · 25/06/2022 07:33

YABU. We were in Spain recently. The cleaner knocked at about 9.30. We were in bed naked, we shouted out and she left. End of story.

Total over reaction. Are you hoping for money off your stay?

fungibletoken · 25/06/2022 07:34

I'm sure it made you jump but I wouldn't do anything more about it now (except out your do not disturb sign out!). I'm not sure there's ever a universally great time to clean rooms in decent sized hotels where people are coming and going all the time. You say you were checking out in a few hours but I'm not sure how much information the cleaners will have on who's leaving when? We now just use the do not disturb sign whenever we're in the room, having had rooms cleaned at different times all throughout the day.

Tillsforthrills · 25/06/2022 07:37

Bloody hell you’d expect a bit of peace at 8am!

It was too early.
