To complain about cleaner walking in on me naked

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:20

Staying in a chain hotel, Western Europe, 8am. I'm up but also naked in bed, having a coffee. Someone knocks on the door, I ignore it, not sure if it's my door or someone else's. Then the door opens and a man calls out something, I dive under my sheets and I think I shouted out 'there's someone in here', so the door closes. I throw some clothes on, go in the corridor and say to the guy that check out is 11, and also angrily 'don't come in my room, what the hell!' I didn't have a 'do not disturb ' sign on my door, but then I wouldn't expect to have to use it if I'm checking out before 11. AIBU to complain?

I would suggest cleaning later than 8am as most people don't want a 8am wake up call on holiday.

Ah ok. So you'd like check-in to be later to accommodate the fact you want the rooms to be cleaned later.

Gotcha.

MistyRuins I'm a business traveller myself, but it's a Saturday, not a day of work.

It is for the hotel workers

Not everyone works the same hours you do.

Then put the sign on the door. It's seriously not that hard.

Yes! Have you not walked down a hotel corridor and seen them all hung out on the doors?!

Yes of course. That's exactly what I do

What times acceptable for you? Are you happy to have check in 4 hours later to accommodate for them having time to clean all the rooms? Most people will be up and out for breakfast at 8am on a holiday.

Most people are out of their hotels rooms by 8am? Really?

I haven’t experienced this.and or or course varies by hotel. The night after a wedding - no chance. The night after a boozy dinner - no chance.

it does of course vary by hotel and location. People in city hotels ar et here for very different reasons, work, shopping trip, weddings, hen and stag weekends, city break.

In the hotel I just stayed at in London we had breakfast at 9am, and it was the busiest time. Later at weekends.

I agree he shouldn't have been knocking and the DND sign is NOT there to prevent an early wake up call from staff - do people really think that's what it is for?? It should be a given that no one comes knocking at 8am on your check out day.

I would say it likely was a mistake on his paperwork or he was under terrible pressure to get rooms turned around so was knocking to see if anyone had already left. He did knock and did leave as soon as you called to him so there was no need to run after him and shout at him. I am sure he was already mortified enough.

Ok, you are clearly more wise than the rest of us.

What is the do not disturb sign for?

Literally why they have Do Not Disturb signs for doors. Of course cleaners start early - they've got to get round all the rooms, especially if it's a checkout day because they've got to get it cleaned for the next guest.

11am checkout doesn't mean everyone checks out at 11am, it means everyone is supposed to check out BY 11am - lots of people will leave early to travel home.

hellcatspangle · 25/06/2022 08:16

I suspect they are short staffed so have to start cleaning early in order to get all the rooms done for check in.

YABU for not answering - if I get a knock on the door in the hotel I just call out so they know I'm still in there and they go away!

Cervinia · 25/06/2022 08:16

Generally speaking I don't mind a cleaner knocking and shouting "house keeping" or whatever, but 08:00 AM?

I don't sleep well at home for a combination of reasons including my age, but mainly the bloody cats who want feeding at the first bird tweet. In a hotel where the sheets are clean and crisp, the room is pitch black and the cats are home alone with a timed feeder bowl, I sleep like a log.

I would have been mightily pissed off at a bang on the door, let alone it opening.

girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 08:17

@Mellowyellow222 most hotels stop serving breakfast by half 9 at the latest

Yes what is the DND sign for? Enlighten us.

girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 07:53

No it's not, don't be so fucking ridiculous
The room is her until 11, nobody should be knocking or attempting to come in unless she has requested it

So the cleaners shouldn't be allowed to clean the rooms that people have finished using before check out time? So they should try and fit 7 hours worth of work into 4 hours so that OP can avoid responding to a knock on the door or using the signs supplied for this very reason?

She hadn't checked out, so should not be disturbed unless she has requested something
Their schedule is not @Yolojo problem- to put it politely
Where do you draw the line then @girlmom21 , let them come in at midnight? 3am?, to make it easier/more convenient for them?
I'm interested to find out where you think the line should be drawn

WeLovePeaSoup · 25/06/2022 08:18

yanbu! I used to work in a 5* hotel in Europe. The rule was you start where the visitors have checked out. They would tell us ( boss) when we start which room we should go first. Then we can check on the television later on which room we should go next etc. It had a special channel to do that. Was this guy a cleaner or the mini bar stuff? The people who stock up the mini bar liked to go in first to check if there was any tip left and they took it without fail.
So no, he shouldn’t go in especially as it was only 8am he could have started on other rooms if he was a cleaner. Yes, please do complain!

HairyMcLarie · 25/06/2022 08:18

YANBU. I am a regular hotel user for work and have previously worked as housekeeping at a hotel.
Housekeeping should not even try to enter the room on checkout day before checkout time unless they have been given the list that says who has checked out already.
I have never used a DND sign on checkout day for this very reason. Those saying it's your fault for not using it are wrong although it does obviously help In the instance where they come to the wrong room in error.
Having said that though it's clearly an error for overworked, time limited staff so I'd cut them some slack. He left when you shouted so no harm done so I wouldn't complain.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/06/2022 07:28

Why didn't you have the deadline lock on?

Could be wrong here, but many deadlocks are disabled by hotel master keys . In case someone is taken ill or other emergency like fire evacuation.

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 08:19

I haven't shouted at anyone, for those admonishing me for apparently causing a disturbance. It's fairly common in the hotels I've stayed in for cleaners to start work only after check out time, it's not as shocking a suggestion as you are implying.

You're missing the point. I'm suggesting that it's bad practice, if nothing else, to routinely wake up hotel guests at 8am on a Saturday. It's too early, ideally reception could provide a list of empty rooms/ early check-outs to the cleaners if an 8am start is needed, rather than randomly knocking on doors of people who may want some rest.

OP posts:
girlmom21 · 25/06/2022 08:19

@MrsPrimulaSpread lots of places don't do a manned checkout now. You just drop your keys in a slot. If she's staying for more than one day they'd need to clean the room without her checking out.

Do the cleaners work at 3am? No they don't. Because most people are going to be in their room at 3am.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 25/06/2022 08:20

I didn't think I'd have to use a do not disturb sign if I am checking out at the normal time of 11 anyway.
What do you think the DND signs are for exactly? If this was the case they wouldn’t need to provide DND signs!

Lots of people will leave by 8am, those checking out early to travel somewhere else, those who have been away on business and are leaving early to get home. Saturday is also a working day for plenty of people. Basically you were wrong.

YANBU but don't complain. It was clearly an error.

Mellowyellow222 · 25/06/2022 08:20

I wonder is this the issue - some people are talking about 5* hotels while others are talking about lower star hotels. The service standards of course differ.

Honeyroar · 25/06/2022 08:20

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:53

It seems the majority opinion is I'm being unreasonable, so I'll go with that. I'm normally someone on the side of people in service jobs having done those jobs myself and don't want to get anyone in trouble, nor I'm I trying to get money off, seeing as I'm not paying for it anyway. I felt vulnerable with an unknown man entering my room whilst I'm, y'know, naked. I thought 8am was a bit early for a Saturday, especially as I'm checking out later, I could have been asleep (and in fact wanted a lie in after working all week, but my body clock had different ideas). I don't normally stay in hotels, I didn't think I'd have to use a do not disturb sign if I am checking out at the normal time of 11 anyway. If nothing else, surely it's bad practice to be knocking on hotel guests doors at 8am anyway?

But he only knocked on the door because there wasn’t a do not disturb sign up. That’s pretty standard in hotels. Sometimes people go out early and the cleaners use that opportunity to get a room clean early. You had two opportunities to let him know you were there and didn’t want the room servicing- putting the sign up and saying no when he knocked.

Ouchmytoe100 · 25/06/2022 08:21

You can't complain as literally nothing happened. Next time put thr sign on the door and don't ignore knocking? Would you really want to get the cleaner in trouble at his job for such an absolute non-event that you could have avoided by just not ignoring the knock or putting the sign on the door?

BattenburgDonkey · 25/06/2022 08:22

Also if you are business traveller yourself, then how come you didn’t no about the do not disturb signs because “I don't normally stay in hotels”
