To complain about cleaner walking in on me naked

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:20

Staying in a chain hotel, Western Europe, 8am. I'm up but also naked in bed, having a coffee. Someone knocks on the door, I ignore it, not sure if it's my door or someone else's. Then the door opens and a man calls out something, I dive under my sheets and I think I shouted out 'there's someone in here', so the door closes. I throw some clothes on, go in the corridor and say to the guy that check out is 11, and also angrily 'don't come in my room, what the hell!' I didn't have a 'do not disturb ' sign on my door, but then I wouldn't expect to have to use it if I'm checking out before 11. AIBU to complain?

Did you think the cleaner was psychic? No sign on the door, no response to the knock, it's obvious that the room is empty, but lo and behold, you've just caused him embarrassment. You should be apologising!

onlythreenow · 25/06/2022 07:38

This could have been avoided if you had bothered to call out when he knocked on the door. YABU.

steppingcarefully · 25/06/2022 07:39

This happened to my son recently. He entered a room he believed to be empty and the door was even slightly open. The room number was on his list showing as being vacated, he knocked and called out but no answer. The occupant of the room was extremely abusive and then complained to management when he left later that day. If you don't want someone entering your room put the lock on or at least answer when you hear a knock, it's quite obviously going to be housekeeping. Their job is hard and very low paid, cut them some slack.

MistyRuins · 25/06/2022 07:40

Not sure what the guy is supposed to do.

Out of curiosity op, how would you suggest he tries to ensure a room is empty before going in to do his work, if not knocking and waiting for a response?

FourChimneys · 25/06/2022 07:40

Poor cleaner. Surely you are not seriously thinking of complaining about something which is your fault, not his? What were you hoping to achieve?

coffeecupsandfairylights · 25/06/2022 07:40

You were really rude.

You didn't put the sign out and ignored the knocking - he (naturally) thought you'd gone to breakfast or something and that it was okay to come in, but out of decency he still shouted out - and left as soon as he realised his mistake.

But you still thought it was okay to go down the corridor and shout at him for doing his job? 🤔

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 25/06/2022 07:40

you could have shouted back when he knocked, you didn’t AND didn’t have the dnd sign on. This is on you

SimonaRazowska · 25/06/2022 07:41

ehhhmmm that is why the do-not-disturb sign exists OP

you were being silly

ZekeZeke · 25/06/2022 07:44

That's what DND signs are for.

waitingpatientlyforspring · 25/06/2022 07:47

Years ago we checked into a hotel for a wedding (evening invite). My dh has a nap, I had a shower then laid on bed half naked to dry and read my book. In waltzes a tradesman! I was mortified.

At 8am (or 4pm in my case), you should not have to answer the door and place a do not disturb sign up to ensure people don't open your door to come in. What happens if you were in the bath? Having sex? Hard of hearing? You don't hear or register the knock so anyone with a key can walk in? No way!

Complain OP.

Mellowyellow222 · 25/06/2022 07:49

I stay in hotel regularly and have only used the do not disturb sign if I am napping during the day. I would not expect to have to put it up during normal sleeping times - which in holiday 8am is.

it is hard to tell in a hotel room which door is being knocked. And 8am is too early to expect guest to be awake and able to hear knocking (I would sleep though this).

but never sleep in a hotel room without securing the door. I put a chair up against is. Lots of people can access the room. This was unprofessional but harmless. You never know who will try and access a room.

hammsalllad · 25/06/2022 07:49

You didn't respond to the knock, and you didn't use the DND sign.

Completely and utterly your fault.

SandyWedges · 25/06/2022 07:49
  1. Use the sign, that is what it is for.
  2. If you hear a knock answer it, that is what it is for.

Mally100 · 25/06/2022 07:24

Yabu, entirely your fault for not having a sign on the door. He knocked, waited and called out and then immediately shut the door. You were rude to shout at him.

No it's not, don't be so fucking ridiculous
The room is her until 11, nobody should be knocking or attempting to come in unless she has requested it
Jesus wept.....
I'd complain too

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:53

It seems the majority opinion is I'm being unreasonable, so I'll go with that. I'm normally someone on the side of people in service jobs having done those jobs myself and don't want to get anyone in trouble, nor I'm I trying to get money off, seeing as I'm not paying for it anyway. I felt vulnerable with an unknown man entering my room whilst I'm, y'know, naked. I thought 8am was a bit early for a Saturday, especially as I'm checking out later, I could have been asleep (and in fact wanted a lie in after working all week, but my body clock had different ideas). I don't normally stay in hotels, I didn't think I'd have to use a do not disturb sign if I am checking out at the normal time of 11 anyway. If nothing else, surely it's bad practice to be knocking on hotel guests doors at 8am anyway?

Complain about what exactly.

So the cleaners shouldn't be allowed to clean the rooms that people have finished using before check out time? So they should try and fit 7 hours worth of work into 4 hours so that OP can avoid responding to a knock on the door or using the signs supplied for this very reason?

Yolojo · 25/06/2022 07:54

And BTW there is a code to enter the door, so I can't lock it from staff who have the code.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 25/06/2022 07:55

Well no, there's many rooms to clean in a hotel so they start early. That's why the DND sign is used. You do realise that people leave early for days out or even breakfast when staying in a hotel right?

Maybe he thought you'd checked out early, or had gone to breakfast, or any number of other things.

But you ignored him when you knocked on the door so of course he was going to assume the room was empty 🙈

What? They come in every day and clean/restock biscuits etc

Hotels aren't just used by holidaymakers though. Depending on location, for many hotels their core business year round is business travellers - some of which may well be up well before 8am for work.

I can’t believe you are getting such a hard time here!

MistyRuins · 25/06/2022 07:58

I'm beginning to wonder if some people on this thread have never stayed in a hotel.
