To complain about cleaner walking in on me naked

Staying in a chain hotel, Western Europe, 8am. I'm up but also naked in bed, having a coffee. Someone knocks on the door, I ignore it, not sure if it's my door or someone else's. Then the door opens and a man calls out something, I dive under my sheets and I think I shouted out 'there's someone in here', so the door closes. I throw some clothes on, go in the corridor and say to the guy that check out is 11, and also angrily 'don't come in my room, what the hell!' I didn't have a 'do not disturb ' sign on my door, but then I wouldn't expect to have to use it if I'm checking out before 11. AIBU to complain?

That's what the do not disturb sign is for. How are they meant to be telepathic and know you're checking out. They are paid to clean all rooms.

You shouldn’t need a dnd sign on your door at 8am. No hotel I've ever stayed at has had cleaners at that time of the day. Far too early.

There are two really useful ways of not having someone enter your room in a hotel. He came in to do the room because although it's only 8am and you have until 11am, some people will have vacated the room by then and they can get started and cleaning.

Thats what the DND signs are for. Are your deliberately being obtuse here?

It's too early, ideally reception could provide a list of empty rooms/ early check-outs to the cleaners if an 8am start is needed, rather than randomly knocking on doors of people who may want some rest.
As girl mom said, they either don’t have a list of empty rooms as you can self check out, or it just takes too much organisation and, once printed is obsolete anyway as people are constantly checking out.

That must have been really shocking op. It is a shame your lie-in and coffee were disturbed. I would have hated it too. But I really do think that the DND sign is there for this very reason. You didn't put it out so he knocked. You didn't respond to the knock, so he cautiously entered. I don't think he did anything wrong really. Housekeepers get ahead by cleaning the rooms of those who leave early.

You can't complain. The 'do not disturb' sign is there for a reason, and they did knock and you ignored it.

To follow through on the logic of a lot of posters here, should I then put the DND sign on the door when going to bed every night and take it off when I leave in the morning? It's not a bad idea, but I wasn't aware this was standard practice. I thought it was used for later in the day and you were staying in, tbh.

Depends on the person. I do put the sign there, however wether I had or not, I wouldn’t ignore the door being knocked on in a hotel, so really I don’t need the sign, I’d just shout ‘sorry im busy’ and the staff member would go away. But if you are not wanting to even shout acknowledgement at your door when staff knock on it (because it’s obliviously very likely to be staff) then I would use the do not disturb sign without fail really. Sitting naked on the bed without a do not disturb sign on the door, and then pretending you aren’t in the room, is just a bad plan.

8am is too early for cleaners to be coming into rooms. Unless it's an airport hotel who is up and out by 8am on a Saturday 🤷🏼‍♀️

I put it up the night before if I know I won't be up early. I sometimes leave it up all day if I don't need the room cleaned (I don't drink tea or coffee so don't need that replenished). Saves them time, and there's usually enough towels to do me for at least a week.

I wouldn't be impressed with him knocking at 8am on a Saturday. And it is hard to tell in a hotel whose door is being knocked.

And how about the guests who aren't checking out and just need their rooms cleaned each day?

And by the time they've checked the box, gone round and started cleaning, numerous other people will have checked out 🙄

Cleaner did nothing wrong. OP should have used the DND sign or answered the door!
