To think many vegetarians and vegans are self entitled?

I know this is purely anecdotal evidence but of all the people I know or have met who are vegetarian or vegan (V/V for short) only about 1% were not judgement about other people's food choices.

Don't get me wrong I think business and friends/family should make some allowances for other's life style choices but the way many V/V treat others is just horrendous.

Point in case went to a local volunteer run food bank the other day and the lady in front of me had a melt down because there was meat in her food parcel. The organiser politely said why not give it to friends or family members instead but she the woman was having none of it and kept going off on one about how inconsiderate the organiser was.

I just couldn't believe the level of ingratitude this woman displayed considering these volunteers play such a vital role in the community.

Is my bias showing by feeling this way?

I feel sure that it's very difficult to cater for vegans from a food bank as the majority of donators will be putting meat / fish based products in the collection bins, wanting to provide a wholesome meal.

Even if they're putting vegetable based foods in, often they may have been processed with animal derived stock or dried milk/egg powder.

When people donate , they just donate , thinking that they're helping. They're not going to be examining the labels looking to see if milk powder was used in it's processing.

It must be incredibly difficult to be a vegan that needs to use a food bank but unless the majority of people are specifically asked to make vegan donations then it's going to be hard to accommodate.

But lots of food donated to food banks is already vegan.

Lots of biscuits are vegan (e.g bourbons, jammy dodgers) as well as lots of ramen noodles. Most pot noodle flavours are vegan. The beef one definitely is. Not to mention baked beans and pasta which are regularly donated (and yes, before anyone starts pasta is vegan).

I think lots of people are probably already donating accidentally vegan foods without realising it.

JubileeTrifle · 24/06/2022 23:07

The problem is you only have your own experiences.
I worked with a vegan with a terrible diet (no fruit, virtually no veg, just fake meat and carbs) who took every single opportunity to criticise what everyone else was eating and tell them what the vegan alternative would be and how it would be better.
She had a massive falling out with her in-laws for not providing an entirely vegan Christmas dinner, so no turkey etc. it was bizarre and rude.

PlattyJubes · 24/06/2022 23:19

How reassuring in this crazy world to see that the weekly MN Anti-Vegan thread is alive and kicking 😁.

Do some people really have nothing better to do? 😴

Shelby2010 · 24/06/2022 23:26

I think your ‘Poor people should be grateful for our generous charity’ attitude is more entitled.

IRunbecauseILikeCake · 24/06/2022 23:41

There's a new veggie and vegan bashing thread here evert other week 🙄

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/06/2022 23:51

Imagine you had a nice box of fresh food and someone went and put a chunk of animal corpse in it. Eww.

deedledeedledum · 25/06/2022 09:49

OP seriously, the only person coming across as militant and judgemental is you

I know a fair few vegans and vegetarians, my
dd is vegan and isn’t bothered by anyone around her eating meat, none of the v/v I know lecture others.
I find the carb police far worse.

I'm a very low carb vegetarian the doesn't eat eggs...🤣

it's not ME that brings it up, it's other people!! I'm happy to discuss it, if people want to, but it's not something I choose to discuss and I don't comment on their non veggie/high carb food, except occasionally to say it looks nice/did they enjoy it.

so please don't broad brush low carbers either!!

Stompythedinosaur · 26/06/2022 09:43

I think, if someone has had to access a food bank, giving them food they cannot eat is awful.

PinkWisteria · 26/06/2022 09:56

Ncwinc · 24/06/2022 20:04

If someone goes to a food bank for help because they don’t have the money for food I’d say it’s shockingly insensitive to give them food they can’t eat and then suggest they give it away if they don’t want it.

This!

HangingOver · 26/06/2022 09:59

I don't care what other people eat. DP and both housemates eat meat, I don't bat an eyelid as long as I don't have to cook it.

Equally, I'm done being apologetic for my beliefs. When I first went vegan I was quite, "I'm so sorry, silly old me and my awkward food requirements". Some people ask questions about veganism from a point of genuine interest and some men people do it because they want to start an argument. Basically, if people prod me about it with the intention of giving me shit, I will give shit back.

But Christ no I don't go around trying to "convert" people. You get enough shit for being vegan anyway who has the energy to make it even worse.

Florenz · 26/06/2022 10:07

I don't think people who use foodbanks are in a position to be picky about what they eat. It's not that vegetarians can't eat meat, it's that they choose not to. The woman should have treated the meat item no differently than a packet of biscuits that weren't her favourite variety.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/06/2022 10:08

No we're not entitled, we just want to be left to get on with eating what we want in peace without people making rude comments throughout our meal.
Do you eschew all vegan/vegetarian food? I suppose you don't eat salad, fruit or vegetables then?
How do you feel when people criticise you for eating vegetables?
I am bored shitless with ignorant morons who think its ok to go on and on about what I eat. Its my personal choice to live a non violent lifestyle and I'll eat and do what I want.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/06/2022 10:15

Many cultures practice non violence as a lifestyle, Ahimsa is one practice, there is a very long history of veganism in India, I was brought up in Mauritius and there is a huge culture of veganism there as a religious lifestyle, both Gandhi and Martin Luther King practised non violence. Nobody calls them fanatics or "entitled".
Try educating yourself.

The woman should have accepted eating a piece of the body of a living animal which grew up in shitty conditions, was then murdered young, cut into bits, and served up to her in a piece of polypropylene film. And that’s the same as getting custard creams instead of bourbons. Ok then.

There's an obvious difference between eating a less favourite food item and eating a food item that goes against your beliefs. I suppose by your argument, a Jewish or Muslim person should have just accepted some bacon?

Ethelfromnumber73 · 26/06/2022 10:30

Oh god, this again?

Florenz · 26/06/2022 10:34

"There's an obvious difference between eating a less favourite food item and eating a food item that goes against your beliefs. I suppose by your argument, a Jewish or Muslim person should have just accepted some bacon?"
Yes, absolutely. Pretty much every religion accepts that dietary laws do not have to be followed when needs must.

RoseslnTheHospital · 26/06/2022 10:36

So you do think it's reasonable for a food bank to give Jewish/Muslim people bacon, rather than make any effort to find an alternative. Ok then.

hangonsnoopy · 26/06/2022 10:39

People using food banks are entitled to be given that they can eat. To get a referral to a food bank, a worker has to believe that you are in desperate need.

I refer people to food banks and we fill in the questions on the referral so that the person gets appropriate food.

If I found out they were being greeted by a bunch of people at the food bank carrying on like Mr Bumble I would refer them to a different food bank in future.

Really?

How about if they served up a nice dog steak, or cat mince? Would you eat that if you were in that position? Because asking a vegan to eat dead cow, pig or chicken is the same bloody thing.

I don't even have the energy for that shut.

I've been vegetarian for 33 years now, & I low carb because I'm diabetic. If I had the misfortune to need a food bank, I would have to go on medication for my diabetes & still try not to have too many carbs, but there's no way I could just start eating meat.
