To think many vegetarians and vegans are self entitled?

I know this is purely anecdotal evidence but of all the people I know or have met who are vegetarian or vegan (V/V for short) only about 1% were not judgement about other people's food choices.

Don't get me wrong I think business and friends/family should make some allowances for other's life style choices but the way many V/V treat others is just horrendous.

Point in case went to a local volunteer run food bank the other day and the lady in front of me had a melt down because there was meat in her food parcel. The organiser politely said why not give it to friends or family members instead but she the woman was having none of it and kept going off on one about how inconsiderate the organiser was.

I just couldn't believe the level of ingratitude this woman displayed considering these volunteers play such a vital role in the community.

Is my bias showing by feeling this way?

YABU. And rude!

"By the way the organisers this isn't the only instance users of the food bank are encouraged to share food that they don't particularly like from the parcels with others that they know"

Then I'm not surprised that you are stretched to the limit. You need better organisers. Tailor the food boxes for the people who are coming to the service. Don't give extra food for them to store and try to give away.

I completely understand that processed foods are tricky, but meat itself is surely easy to avoid.

oopsfellover · 24/06/2022 21:16

I don’t know any vegetarians or vegans who are openly judgemental about other people’s food choices. Guess as you say it’s all very anecdotal.

NotMushroomInEre · 24/06/2022 21:16

@underneaththeash go on then, enlighten me. Having been vegan for 6 years, I'll probably be deficient now, so please tell me what nutrients I lack. I might look it up and start eating meat again.

I feel sure that it's very difficult to cater for vegans from a food bank as the majority of donators will be putting meat / fish based products in the collection bins, wanting to provide a wholesome meal.

Even if they're putting vegetable based foods in, often they may have been processed with animal derived stock or dried milk/egg powder.

When people donate , they just donate , thinking that they're helping. They're not going to be examining the labels looking to see if milk powder was used in it's processing.

It must be incredibly difficult to be a vegan that needs to use a food bank but unless the majority of people are specifically asked to make vegan donations then it's going to be hard to accommodate.

The majority of donators put in beans and pasta, wanting as much volume as possible for their £ 😆 Food banks are always short of meat.

Sailorchick14 · 24/06/2022 21:19

I'm vegetarian (technically pescatarian) but I would never judge others food choices. Just because I choose not to eat meat that doesn't give me any right to impose that choice on others. I even cook meat for my family, husband would never be veggie!

Yolojo · 24/06/2022 21:21

I was a vegetarian for a very long time and never mentioned it because of the arsey comments I'd get when meat eaters found out. I eat meat nowadays for various reasons, and so it really annoyed me when a work colleague was complaining about the smell of my meat sandwich, something I never would have done when I was veggie. So basically, some arseholes eat meat, some are vegan or vegetarian. Same arseholery, different takes.

Blue4YOU · 24/06/2022 21:21

I have never understood why eating meat is such a norm that it’s “shocking” or “entitled “ not to want to eat it.

onlythreenow · 24/06/2022 21:23

Food banks are largely run by volunteers - getting shirty with volunteers who are doing their best to feed you because your dietary preference isn’t available is clearly not reasonable.

I agree, and why should volunteers have to spend so much of their time trying to cater for every possible dietary requirement? Getting food from one of them is not an entitlement!

underneaththeash · 24/06/2022 21:08

Vegans are just daft to think that withholding essential nutrients is in any way healthy. Best ignored.
everyone should be eating a vegetarian diet a couple of days a week. But children shouldn’t until they’re fully grown unless they understand they will be smaller.
i don’t think they’re entitled - just ignorant sheep.

That you, op?

ToysRMine · 24/06/2022 21:27

I’ve never heard of a food bank not catering for vegetarian diets. Our local one tries their hardest to cater for vegans too.

People using food banks are there because they can’t afford food. I think it’s shocking that they’re giving out food people can’t eat. You don’t even know why she’s vegetarian.

nomistake · 24/06/2022 21:29

I think people who eat meat are incredibly entitled. I mean, killing animals, tearing them from their mothers, destroying the planet. All for their own greed. What could be more entitled than that?

Just let the poor people starve, eh? Ethics and beliefs and preferences are only for the wealthy.

Food banks don’t try to give meat to vegetarians who can’t eat it, because they don’t want donated food to go to waste. (Actually they don’t generally give meat to anyone unless it’s in a tin, because they can’t usually give out anything perishable.) If there was a tin of stewing beef in there or something the volunteer should have just swapped the parcel for a vegetarian one.

How handy that you happened to be queuing at a food bank right behind someone who just happened to illustrate all your prejudices about poor people and vegetarians in a single highly unlikely incident. Real stroke of luck for you, that.

I've been vegan for two years, I'm
So protein deficient I barely have the energy to post this reply 🙃

BalloonsAndWhistles · 24/06/2022 21:35

My sister and her husband are two of the most self entitled people I know. They’re strict vegans. I feel so sorry for my two nephews who are having the diet forced on them. One came home from school Upset as all the other kids had been eating pizza and he hadn’t been allowed as my sister had said he couldn’t (non vegan cheese) The kids are desperate to try meat but they get given things like cold broccoli and plain pasta 🤮 And they’re quite skinny too. Horrid to see.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 24/06/2022 20:02

She’s a vegetarian. She doesn’t want meat in her parcel. That’s fair enough.

yeah totally, she's gone through all the palaver of getting her voucher and getting herself to the foodbank, wanting food she can eat isn't an unreasonable expectation. As for you should just give it away, if she wasn't pretty damn desperate she wouldn't have been there right?

She must've been so gutted.

NotMushroomInEre · 24/06/2022 21:37

@JimMorrisonsleathertrousers please start eating meat again. I died after 3 years of being protein deficient 😱

NuttyinNotts · 24/06/2022 21:38

Tailoring food parcels to dietary requirements is better for meat eaters too. More tuna and stewing steak for them and less chickpeas and lentils. Why should requiring help mean giving up your dignity and going against your ethics?

Somethingneedstochange · 24/06/2022 21:40

She's a vegetarian do they not consider vegetarians/vegans need to use food banks? Why would she give food away? She's at the foodbank because she is skint and needs to eat. If she had specified she is vegetarian why would they hand over a non vegetarian food parcel?

Some people just don't like the texture of meat and the thought of eating a dead animal with blood running through it.

My own son doesn't like the texture of some meat's. He will only eat the thigh and legs part on a roast chicken. The chicken breast is too chewy for him so I give him the part he does like.He prefers vegetables. Should I force him to tuck into a roast beef dinner knowing he hates the texture of it and just chew it but will end up in the bin?

Maybe she was OTT she could have politely pointed out she's vegetarian and could she please swap some of the items.

@nomistake @NC12345665 💯

Toottooot · 24/06/2022 21:42

For me I think vegans are most judgemental to vegetarians - they berate them for not ditching dairy etc.

Wafflesnsniffles · 24/06/2022 21:43

I have a vegan friend who is really annoying (never shuts up about it) but LOADS of vegan/vegetarian friends who never lecture/harp on about their food choices. Easily the nicest people I know.
A huge percentage of meat eaters that I know however.............. urgh! Constantly going on about how boring they perceive a veggie/vegan diet to be, how they couldnt possibly manage without meat every day etc. Really tedious.
But........ people are people - ignorance abounds, it just so happens I know more annoying meat eaters, others will know more annoying vegans etc - too small a sample to make a sweeping statement.

garfieldfan22 · 24/06/2022 21:44

I'm a vegetarian for years and speaking for myself couldn't give a toss what anyone else eats. You haven't met every vegetarian or vegan in the whole world so can't pass judgement that we are all entitled. There are good and not so good in all groups of people
