To think many vegetarians and vegans are self entitled?

Anabanananaaaaaa · 24/06/2022 19:59

I know this is purely anecdotal evidence but of all the people I know or have met who are vegetarian or vegan (V/V for short) only about 1% were not judgement about other people's food choices.

Don't get me wrong I think business and friends/family should make some allowances for other's life style choices but the way many V/V treat others is just horrendous.

Point in case went to a local volunteer run food bank the other day and the lady in front of me had a melt down because there was meat in her food parcel. The organiser politely said why not give it to friends or family members instead but she the woman was having none of it and kept going off on one about how inconsiderate the organiser was.

I just couldn't believe the level of ingratitude this woman displayed considering these volunteers play such a vital role in the community.

Is my bias showing by feeling this way?

There's a good reason v/v have such a bad reputation

I'm happy to discuss the merits of their lifestyle choice if it happens to come up naturally in conversation but the experiences I've had with these people is akin to Bible bashers trying to convert me it's so boring

Yeah, those damn poor people should just grovel for whatever is thrown at them, how dare they question Saint Food Bank Volunteer.

HoldingTheDoor · 24/06/2022 20:37

How many people are going to donate a can of jackfruit (£3 in my local shop) vs a tin of tuna (.75p)

Tinned Beans and lentils(all varieties) are much cheaper than jackfruit and are much more filling and are a good source of protein.

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 20:41

I've been vegetarian for three decades and never eaten jackfruit. Beans, pulses, tinned ravioli, so many vegan or vegetarian choices in tinned form. Doesn't have to be expensive or unusual.

Glad to see the OP is just doubling down on the vegetarian and vegan hate based on nothing but their own prejudices.

I’m vegetarian, have been for 30 odd years. I have never eaten jackfruit 🤷🏻‍♀️

fyn · 24/06/2022 20:42

@HoldingTheDoor I picked Jackfruit as an alternative because lentils and beans are great for bulking but don’t have the same levels nutrients.

DangerouslyBored · 24/06/2022 20:43

What does ‘self entitled’ even mean? Confused

@RoseslnTheHospital as food banks receive mostly donated food, I’d guess it is quite difficult to replace canned meat with a suitable vegan alternative. How many people are going to donate a can of jackfruit (£3 in my local shop) vs a tin of tuna (.75p). I know when I donate things I look for affordable food, a couple of tons of jackfruit isn’t going to be at the top of my list. Food banks are largely run by volunteers - getting shirty with volunteers who are doing their best to feed you because your dietary preference isn’t available is clearly not reasonable.

Princes do a lentil and mushroom bolognese, Sainsburys and Morrisons do chickpea Dahl, most supermarkets do mixed beans in chilli sauce, Sainsburys has cans of veggie red thai curry and veggie ravioli these days. Spaghetti hoops, baked beans, stir in pasta sauces and flavoured couscous are usually vegetarian too. There are so many cheap and quick to heat options that aren't jackfruit.

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 20:44

"There's a good reason v/v have such a bad reputation"

I never talk about being vegetarian unless I have to in order to give dietary requirements. What often happens is that people then take that as a cue to debate, discuss or even ridicule my choices. Do I think that all meat eaters are wankers as a result? No.

I think maybe you just hang out with a bunch of wangs tbh.

i know quite a few veggies and vegans and all of them are absolutely zero fuss, don’t mention it and would quietly bring their own food or eat a bowl of chips instead of making a fuss about how hideous we all are for eating meat.

maybe it’s the company you keep OP. Birds of a feather etc etc

I am not vegetarian, but I have a can of jackfruit in my cupboard. It is meant to be like pulled pork (which is expensive, hence why I bought the jackfruit).

NotMushroomInEre · 24/06/2022 20:46

@Anabanananaaaaaa I think you're one of those who actually love to question vegans/vegetarians, get offended when they say something you don't like, and then scream 'You are like Bible bashers'. It is your issue, not theirs.

PestorPeston · 24/06/2022 20:47

Jackfruit is not a meat replacement, it has no protein. Just stick a tin of mixed beans in 58p

In what way? Lentils are better than jackfruit on every count, they have more calories, more fibre, more protein.

Yeah the person getting the poor reputation in this thread is not the vegetarian woman in the foodbank you are using as an example here...

Mosaic123 · 24/06/2022 20:48

Maybe the food bank user had some mental health issues or was just having a bad day?

Summerlovin20 · 24/06/2022 20:50

I know a fair few vegans and vegetarians, my
dd is vegan and isn’t bothered by anyone around her eating meat, none of the v/v I know lecture others.
I find the carb police far worse.

Which nutrients? Jackfruit has less than 3g per 100g of protein, lentils 9g

The only reason jackfruit is sold as a meat substitute is that it has a similar texture, nutritionally it's nothing of the sort

Ncwinc · 24/06/2022 20:04

If someone goes to a food bank for help because they don’t have the money for food I’d say it’s shockingly insensitive to give them food they can’t eat and then suggest they give it away if they don’t want it.

Agree with this.

XenoBitch · 24/06/2022 20:52

Most of my friends are vegetarian/vegan. I have never been preached at by them, and equally I have never pulled out the overused trope of "what about bacon?" or waved steaks in their faces. Neither have I been one of the entitled meat eaters I am always reading about who moan when their vegan friends wont make them a meat based meal.

Some vegans are like the Jehovah’s witnesses for food. Others are okay and bring their own substitutes

What does this mean?

So poor people should eat what they are given, no matter what?

Obviously. Right, OP?

But this woman didn’t want to discuss the merits of a meat free / plant based lifestyle. She wanted (or needed) a food parcel which contained food that she could eat. I’m sorry someone upset that they will be hungry after having to give away part of their food parcel bores you. Must be a difficult situation for you to be in.
