To think many vegetarians and vegans are self entitled?

Anabanananaaaaaa · 24/06/2022 19:59

I know this is purely anecdotal evidence but of all the people I know or have met who are vegetarian or vegan (V/V for short) only about 1% were not judgement about other people's food choices.

Don't get me wrong I think business and friends/family should make some allowances for other's life style choices but the way many V/V treat others is just horrendous.

Point in case went to a local volunteer run food bank the other day and the lady in front of me had a melt down because there was meat in her food parcel. The organiser politely said why not give it to friends or family members instead but she the woman was having none of it and kept going off on one about how inconsiderate the organiser was.

I just couldn't believe the level of ingratitude this woman displayed considering these volunteers play such a vital role in the community.

Is my bias showing by feeling this way?

If someone goes to a food bank for help because they don’t have the money for food I’d say it’s shockingly insensitive to give them food they can’t eat and then suggest they give it away if they don’t want it.

Especially as you only use the food bank when you can't afford to feed yourself. You expect her to go without food because they can not manage the basics of giving people food they can eat because they like it/are not allergic to it/doesn't make them feel ill.

Ablababla · 24/06/2022 20:58

And if a Hindu person had been given beef would that have been unreasonable of them to be upset? I don’t think so? My religion is pretty niche but vegetarianism is a requirement. I’ve never eaten meat and the idea of it makes me feel a bit Ill. I’d never question others choices though.

While i like to think I’d be polite in this situation I might actually not be in a very good place about having to use a food bank. (Embarrassed, stressed etc) I might also feel I was being given less because of my diet choices which would be upsetting.

Try hosting a party with a vegan child in attendance. It costs a fortune but I'd never leave that child out.

Grapewrath · 24/06/2022 20:59

You sound absolutely ridiculous tbh.

Vikinga · 24/06/2022 21:00

Yabvu. I wish they had been more forceful. I feel really sick thinking of all the years that I have contributed to this needless cruelty to sentient animals.

enjoyingscience · 24/06/2022 21:01

If her food parcel contained meat which she couldn’t eat, she got less food than she needed.

that’s really kicking someone when they are down.

I can’t believe you would think that would be entitled - she’s just asking for the same as everyone else gets in terms of quantity.

And jackfruit is 100% inferior to lentils or pulses as a food. Eat it if you want, but nutritionally it is much poorer.

@RoseslnTheHospital as food banks receive mostly donated food, I’d guess it is quite difficult to replace canned meat with a suitable vegan alternative. How many people are going to donate a can of jackfruit (£3 in my local shop) vs a tin of tuna (.75p). I know when I donate things I look for affordable food, a couple of tons of jackfruit isn’t going to be at the top of my list. Food banks are largely run by volunteers - getting shirty with volunteers who are doing their best to feed you because your dietary preference isn’t available is clearly not reasonable.

Tofu comes in longlife packets and is a similar price to tuna, chickpeas are cheaper, lentils ?- seroiusly there are loads of things meat could be substituted with.

What vegan food costs a fortune?!

FourChimneys · 24/06/2022 21:05

I have been vegan for longer than most people on here have been alive. I am not entitled at all. I will always offer to take food if necessary.

I'm not sure why anyone should have to be grateful for meat however poor they are. Our local food bank will cater for any dietary needs or preferences, treating its clients with respect.

There's a good reason v/v have such a bad reputation

I'm happy to discuss the merits of their lifestyle choice if it happens to come up naturally in conversation but the experiences I've had with these people is akin to Bible bashers trying to convert me it's so boring

‘These people’

I think that you are winding us up. Are you bored?

ChompChamp · 24/06/2022 21:06

OP, you sound like a complete arsehole.

hope that helps.

it only costs a fortune if you let it.

All the other kids can eat vegan food too. Meat eaters wont die if they don't eat meat for one meal.

Coughee · 24/06/2022 21:07

What a load of bollocks. Have you time travelled here from the 70s op? Veggies and vegans are so common now they're hardly worth commenting on. It's certainly not something people bang on about much anymore.

PestorPeston · 24/06/2022 21:08

I suppose it depends on the aims of the food bank.
If the aim is to relieve hunger YABU
If the aim is to look good, YABU

Why? Half the things served at any kids party are vegan. Lots.of crisps, biscuits, cakes, crackers, sweets are accidently vegan and then there's always actual vegetables and fruit, hummus, falafel etc. You don't need to buy vegan products.

FourChimneys · 24/06/2022 21:08

Katya213 I regularly cater for vegans apart from myself. This isn't a dig at you but why is it costing a fortune? I have always found it a very cheap way to live.

Mosaic123 · 24/06/2022 20:48

Maybe the food bank user had some mental health issues or was just having a bad day?

Or was just plain hungry . Lots of people get grumpy when they are hungry.

underneaththeash · 24/06/2022 21:08

Vegans are just daft to think that withholding essential nutrients is in any way healthy. Best ignored.
everyone should be eating a vegetarian diet a couple of days a week. But children shouldn’t until they’re fully grown unless they understand they will be smaller.
i don’t think they’re entitled - just ignorant sheep.

Granted not the healthiest but not expensive.
This with some veggi sticks, humous and a vegan cupcake would be fine surely ?

People make such a fuss. I am not vegan but live with one veggi and one vegan. It's not that hard.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 24/06/2022 21:12

I feel sure that it's very difficult to cater for vegans from a food bank as the majority of donators will be putting meat / fish based products in the collection bins, wanting to provide a wholesome meal.

Even if they're putting vegetable based foods in, often they may have been processed with animal derived stock or dried milk/egg powder.

When people donate , they just donate , thinking that they're helping. They're not going to be examining the labels looking to see if milk powder was used in it's processing.

It must be incredibly difficult to be a vegan that needs to use a food bank but unless the majority of people are specifically asked to make vegan donations then it's going to be hard to accommodate.

Oh not this crap again. There is a difference between a vegan and a vegetarian diet. There is one study that showed that at one point in childhood, vegan children were on average 3cm shorter than other children. No evidence this persists into adulthood.

A vegetarian diet isn't deficient and children are perfectly healthy on a vegetarian diet. Vegans will need to include b12 in their diet or supplement it. A well planned vegan diet is not deficient and is healthy.

ChompChamp · 24/06/2022 21:13

Have I heard vegans/vegetarians evangelicize about their respective diets, for sure.

But not have as often as moaning meat-eaters frothing about it.
