To think many vegetarians and vegans are self entitled?

Anabanananaaaaaa · 24/06/2022 19:59

I know this is purely anecdotal evidence but of all the people I know or have met who are vegetarian or vegan (V/V for short) only about 1% were not judgement about other people's food choices.

Don't get me wrong I think business and friends/family should make some allowances for other's life style choices but the way many V/V treat others is just horrendous.

Point in case went to a local volunteer run food bank the other day and the lady in front of me had a melt down because there was meat in her food parcel. The organiser politely said why not give it to friends or family members instead but she the woman was having none of it and kept going off on one about how inconsiderate the organiser was.

I just couldn't believe the level of ingratitude this woman displayed considering these volunteers play such a vital role in the community.

Is my bias showing by feeling this way?

After over 50 years of being vegan, I'm still waiting for my protein deficiency to kick in. Must be any day now.

For me I think vegans are most judgemental to vegetarians - they berate them for not ditching dairy etc.

Vegetarian for +30 years as mentioned previously, this has never happened to me.

Vegans are just daft to think that withholding essential nutrients is in any way healthy. Best ignored.
everyone should be eating a vegetarian diet a couple of days a week. But children shouldn’t until they’re fully grown unless they understand they will be smaller.
i don’t think they’re entitled - just ignorant sheep.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣my daughter has been fully vegan since birth… healthy, intelligent and 6foot tall 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

My sister and her husband are two of the most self entitled people I know. They’re strict vegans. I feel so sorry for my two nephews who are having the diet forced on them. One came home from school Upset as all the other kids had been eating pizza and he hadn’t been allowed as my sister had said he couldn’t (non vegan cheese) The kids are desperate to try meat but they get given things like cold broccoli and plain pasta 🤮 And they’re quite skinny too. Horrid to see.

Do you think that all vegans and vegetarians are like this? Do you also view people that have a religious diet at home to be "forcing it" on their children?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 24/06/2022 21:47

The two guys I work with both opt for veggie food or vegan food whenever we get lunch in, but neither are veggies or vegan. So they will happily eat meat (one will happily eat any part of an animal) while at home and in their personal lives, but they give me grief when I get a meat dish because I'm not 'doing my bit'.
I mean, I don't tend to eat red meat at home so if we're treating ourselves and getting burgers, I get a beef burger while theyll get the plant burgers.

They're purely performance veggies and it drives me mad.

Sailorchick14 · 24/06/2022 21:19

I'm vegetarian (technically pescatarian) but I would never judge others food choices. Just because I choose not to eat meat that doesn't give me any right to impose that choice on others. I even cook meat for my family, husband would never be veggie!

You husband has meat with every meal then?

DomPerignon12 · 24/06/2022 21:48

YABU, because she may have been upset at something else
But IME people who 'convert' to veganism seem to be more militant than those who were born into it. Same like religion really.
I'm Hindu, culturally raised in a mostly vegetarian household. But food is respected, hosts are respected. It's a much bigger sin to waste food, or refuse food offered with peace and goodwill, than it is to eat meat.

Of course over time some can't eat meat (as they've lost the gut bacteria to digest it).. but it's rude to be disgusted at food

BreadInCaptivity · 24/06/2022 21:51

Personally I think it's a bit of an old trope.

Yes a few vegans I know fall squarely into the "how do you know if someone is vegan - don't worry they will tell you" orthodoxy bit the majority don't.

Quite a few of my friends are vegetarian/vegan and don't impose at all. They are happy to bring their own substitutes (never necessary as I like to cater for all my friends inc those on a GF diet and enjoy cooking and being creative to find food suitable for everyone).

Frankly we should all eat less meat and I'm doing my bit even as a meat lover by restricting it to two days a week.

Given the cost of meat then it's silly for a food bank to provide it at really?

Wouldn't it be better to provide vegetarian food (with suggested recipes) that would be as nutritionally valuable and thus more food?

Katya213 · 24/06/2022 21:51

XenoBitch · 24/06/2022 21:06

All the other kids can eat vegan food too. Meat eaters wont die if they don't eat meat for one meal.

It cost a fortune, no way!

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 21:52

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea they're not any kind of vegetarian, they're just choosing a variety of meals and reducing their meat consumption. Nothing at all to do with vegetarianism.

ForBestResults · 24/06/2022 21:08

Why? Half the things served at any kids party are vegan. Lots.of crisps, biscuits, cakes, crackers, sweets are accidently vegan and then there's always actual vegetables and fruit, hummus, falafel etc. You don't need to buy vegan products.

But I wanted to include her having, cake, pizza, nuggets, sweet cones.

HelloHeathcliffeItsMe · 24/06/2022 21:54

You've probably met some you don't know about. I'm one and never say unless backed into a corner as I get a million questions about it. Women at my baby group think I'm always on a diet and it's a running joke to try and get me to eat cake. I don't want to admit it as then people start apologising for eating animal products or asking me if my car has glue containing animal products etc etc.

I can't imagine having to accept a food parcel so maybe give her a little grace and don't use what was probably not her being her best self as a reason to think everyone who'd rather not eat animals is a twat.

They are performance veggies. As in "not real vegetarians". They make a huge deal about people eating meat when they are out and about but would eat it at home and deny it.

pixie5121 · 24/06/2022 21:57

Is your name Marie Antoinette, OP?

Why would someone not be upset about receiving part of a dead animal in their package if they are a vegetarian for animal welfare reasons? Can you not imagine that would be unpleasant?

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 21:59

I just bought a load of sweets for a kids party that were all vegan, from Tesco, cheap as non vegan sweets. How much would it cost to get one vegan pizza, vegan cake for one child etc?

shinynewapple22 · 24/06/2022 22:07

I think it's quite shocking that organisers of a food bank would expect a vegetarian to be grateful for meat products in their parcel. Honesty I would have expected them to have more empathy /understanding than that .

shinynewapple22 · 24/06/2022 22:09

RedCarsGoFaster · 24/06/2022 20:19

I still call bullshit on this entire scenario.

Yes - you're probably right there .

Gemi33 · 24/06/2022 22:13

I am vegetarian but have never judged anyone else for their dietary choices, it's none of my business. I have, however, been judged and mocked for being vegetarian on multiple occasions by people who eat meat. I'm so bored of it now and OP, you are making a massive generalisation.

Somethingneedstochange · 24/06/2022 22:18

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 24/06/2022 21:36

yeah totally, she's gone through all the palaver of getting her voucher and getting herself to the foodbank, wanting food she can eat isn't an unreasonable expectation. As for you should just give it away, if she wasn't pretty damn desperate she wouldn't have been there right?

She must've been so gutted.

Exactly this who knows what emotional state she was in. People are struggling with the cost of living. For all they know she might not have eaten for days. Which will make her even more emotional.

We have a local community fridge recently been set up at a local community centre. It's mainly fresh food donated by local supermarkets past it's sell by but still ok to eat. Any meat goes in the freezer so it will last. You can choose what you like within reason. For example 3 items from the freezer It's a much better system than just being grateful for what your given.

They often have to open back up because they have a late delivery and say anyone is welcome to come and get some food. It's also cutting food waste. You don't need a voucher and can go every day if needed.

You can have vegan cake (it's delicious), pizza and sweet cones. Nuggets are revolting

MostTacticalNameChange · 24/06/2022 22:22

I never pronounce my vegetarianism voluntarily because of the reaction.

It's never 'ok'. It's always i had a friend who tried that who nearly died of malnutrition/ don't you miss bacon/ why are animals made of meat then/ your teeth are developed for meat-eating/ quorn is just processed shit/ the bible says we can eat animals. It is FUCKING TEDIOUS.

I have colleagues who don't know i'm veggie - they slag off a colleague to me for coming to a steak restaurant on works do when she was veggie. I was there too and ordered the risotto too, but she made the grand mistake of saying she was doing so because she was veggie. I just said i wasn't hungry because i knew i'd get the above. They reckon she should have stayed at home. Guess she made them feel bad or guilty or something or they just want an 'other' to bully. Worked together, ate together for 5+ years and they don't know.

It's cheaper to eat veggie. If you ae the opinion you should be grateful for what you get and shut up, as you clearly are, then it would make much more sense for you to support fully veggie foodbanks. Meat is an expensive luxury. Cheap meat is not nutritious.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/06/2022 22:22

I'm a meat eater, my Mum is vegan and my sister is vegetarian. Neither of them push their beliefs on others, both of them also will cook meat for their partners

Americano75 · 24/06/2022 22:36

happy with meat in her box.

Sorry @Frazzled2207 I did a childish snigger at this.
