To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

Whoopi oh sorry, I was trying to avoid nesting comments, so I didn't quote you.

I do think that people who want to ban abortion are okay with the suicides that result, yes. Not an emotional statement, just a factual one.

Ifitistobesaid · 24/06/2022 23:01

@Faffertea wow that’s awful, so sorry you went through that.

FreyaStorm · 24/06/2022 23:01

EverydayIsPJday · 24/06/2022 22:45

@FreyaStorm I'm currently pregnant with baby #3. We plan for this to be our last baby. Can you just sum up please how me and my husband move forward after this pregnancy as the doctors have mentioned we should think about what we plan to do once baby is here and you obviously have all the answers. Seeing as no method of contraception is 100% guaranteed to not fail do you suggest we never have sex again or face, as you wish, to be publicly shamed? We cannot afford another baby, cannot provide for another, and I cannot go though another pregnancy. So please do let me know the 'right' way to move forward in circumstances such as ours, we'd love to know.

Since you say you can’t afford another baby, abort (you must have missed one of my posts).
If you could afford another then if I were you, I’d struggle to abort, conscience-wise.
In the meantime, use whatever contraception agrees with you and single (not double!) bag him indoors 👍
Thats my view, since you’ve asked.

Jott · 24/06/2022 23:08

Some facts:

Approximately 13% of maternal deaths worldwide are due to unsafe, illegal abortion - around 47,000 women a year

Over half of those are young women and girls under the age of 25

An estimated 5 million women suffer complications due to unsafe abortions such as bleeding, infection, disfigurement, and infertility

Unsurprisingly, the countries with the highest death rates are those with the most restrictive rules and/or outright bans

Countries with easy access to contraception tend to have far lower rates of abortion

The maternal death rate in America is going to go up.

Cartoonmom · 24/06/2022 23:11

@EmmaH2022 - early abortions were done by ingesting various herbs. If a woman didn't grow them in her garden, she could consult a midwife or buy an elixir at the drug store. If you google how early abortion worked, a Smithsonian article should come up that talks about it.

FreyaStorm · 24/06/2022 23:13

@Faffertea so sorry you went through that. There really are so many different reasons why a woman makes the impossible choice. I think my view is coloured by only knowing women who’ve had abortions for reasons such as shagging some random at a festival, forgetting to take the pill with stable boyfriend, wanting a baby ‘in a couple of years, not now’. If I personally knew someone who went through what you have, I may see things differently.

Gonnabegrandma · 24/06/2022 23:19

I felt poleaxed when I heard the result . How can any American woman accept she has no rights over her own body . It’s terrible there will almost certainly be a return to back street abortions and women dying . I just cry for the women of America

ThickCutSteakChips · 24/06/2022 18:37

Someone could equally say if you refuse a foetus the right to life you are a disgusting person.

Yeah, fuck the women who die as a result of this, who gives a shit about them? As long as the foetus survives at all costs. Oh, until its born and becomes and actual person of course, then it can get to fuck and its on its own.

Yeah, whatever. My point is, calling someone a disgusting person because they don’t agree with you is stupid and arseholish. No one said anything about not giving a shit about anyone.

EmmaH2022 · 25/06/2022 00:01

whoopi I'm not disagreeing. I didn't understand your reply to me so I'm not in a position to agree or disagree. 😂

I blame nested quotes.

It doesn't matter - there are definitely bigger things to worry about!

It’s horrific. I’m a Brit resident in Connecticut, so know we will be fine insofar as abortion provisions, but my heart breaks for women in red states. And I don’t trust Clarence Thomas one bit not to target gay marriage and contraception next.

Winniewonka · 25/06/2022 00:10

I haven't read all the thread so someone may have already commented but I was shocked at the numbers of young women on the BBC news CHEERING the decision.

You probably do know a woman who has been in similar circumstances, they just don't go around disclosing their medical history to people. Especially to people like you.

I think where I hit a nerve and caused a pile on is because I’m not one of the ‘all life is sacred’ crew that you lot can scoff at.
A baby created by rape? Not sacred. Get rid.
I just don’t think educated women in their 20s and 30s should be having abortions, particularly those in stable relationships, just to move up another few notches on the career ladder or to go travelling more. Get the implant, double bag him, whatever. You don’t need to be getting accidentally knocked up.

You didn't hit a nerve dearie, you hit my gag reflex.

Aussiegirl123456 · 25/06/2022 00:49

They hate women don’t they?

Honestly, all women should slam their vaginas shut right now and refuse sex indefinitely. It’s the only way we are all completely safe from unwanted pregnancy. Punish all men.

Honestly, when men who rape are given more lenient sentences that women aborting unwanted or unviable pregnancies then you know it’s a sorry day. America is going backwards, it’s scary.

Heyisforhorses · 25/06/2022 01:15

"Kill the rapist, not the baby, the baby did nothing wrong" not verbatim but almost. I'm heartbroken for US women, wtf is okay with this 😥

Scott Benton , Conservative MP for Blackpool South, tweeted his support for the Supreme Court decision. As he is gay and married, it will be interesting to see if he supports Judge Clarence Thomas' suggestion that the Supreme Court should consider same sex marriages - something tells me that he may have a different view on this??

I am really worried that he won't be the only MP who wants to limit the rights of women. I hope that we are able to come together to resist such backwards steps here and abroad. It's so sad that it has come to this.

He's a supporter of SPUC, who claim that same- sex marriage causes abortion. I've never quite been able to figure out the logic behind that one.

That's crazy. Hopefully the women of Blackpool will remember....

Furries · 25/06/2022 01:39

The posters here who are welcoming this. How would you feel if the right to contraception was removed? Take it further (many have seen the show) and fertile women are basically used as breeders.

Are you still happy to throw away your own, and every other woman’s, bodily autonomy?

Aside from the above nightmare scenarios - how can you be happy that, in some states, women won’t be able to abort even if it’s the result of rape or incest?

You are literally giving away the freedom and rights of your own body. And the bodies of millions of other women.

And to those who state along the lines of “I’m pro-choice, but …”. No, you’re not. Pro-choice has nothing to do with whatever caveats you deem “acceptable”.

It just doesn’t compute, for me, that women out there are happy to sign away their freedom of choice, independence, bodily rights, etc.

DeadButDelicious · 24/06/2022 22:02

I admit my judgement is very very much clouded from having lost a baby at 17weeks.

I lost a baby at 20 weeks. If anything that experience has made me even more avowedly pro choice than I was before.

My baby died unexpectedly, she was extremely poorly we found out later. Had she lived, we would have had a decision to make. I don't want to live in a world where the ability to make that choice, to spare my child suffering, could be taken away from me and I would have to endure the agony of waiting for something to happen. It was bad enough when it just happened, I can't fathom the horror of having to wait, to know your child is ill, to know they will die but because of people who wish to deny a mother choice, you must wait for 'nature' to take its course. With all the risks that comes along with that.

My experience ruined me. I will never, ever forget my daughters face, her little hands, her tiny feet, I will never, ever get over the shock and trauma and prolonged recovery that came as a result of things happening 'naturally'. I almost died. I was riddled with infection from retained products. I had two post partum haemorrhages. If all that could have been avoided by having a TFMR then I would have been grateful for it.

I support all women to make the choice that is best for them. As early as possible. As late as is necessary.

These words sound so empty, but I’m truly sorry for your loss and the impact on you 💕💐

Absolutely horrifying, and yet not surprising.
We can never be complacent either. Where the US goes the UK follows.

On this one, I don't think there's any danger of that.

US has some pretty extreme religious zealots and right wing ideologies, exemplified by Trump's "God made the decision". It goes with the madness that allows people to proudly display their gun collection on their front porch for their neighbours to see.

I cannot imagine UK society permitting that madness.

EmmaH2022 · 25/06/2022 03:52

daisy would you have imagined any of this though? It could easily come here. I have been worried about it for ages, given the way some states were going.

I sleep badly at the best of times but I have a real sense of doom tonight.

I can't say I want these people to rot in hell. I want them to rot here, now, on this earth. And though I don't believe in heaven or hell, I wish a hell did exist for such people.

daisychain01 · 25/06/2022 04:24

@EmmaH2022 i know it's a shocking day, but I think it's important to keep things in perspective.

US is a very different country, with an entirely different culture, legal and geopolitical landscape to ours. OK, yes you can always say "it could happen in UK" to everything bad that's happening in US but then you have to consider the likelihood, and I personally think it's comparing apples to oranges comparing what is happening in US to what can happen here.

it’s a spoof account, feels weird to defend a Tory MP, lol, but it’s not him.
