To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

Shocked. Sickened. Angry.

Suburban women swung the election to Biden in 2020, and this issue is going to anger them

As a politician, this will be why Biden's all over the airwaves "regretting" the decision

But as a politician, it may also be why he doesn't necessarily mean it

No I don’t, they should be able to have abortions in those cases. My issue is that those cases are so rare, a tiny percentage of the total number taking place. Same for ectopic pregnancies, severe disabilities, etc

I thought all life was sacred? Why abort the babies of abusers or rapists? If it's about the baby, surely they haven't done anything to deserve being aborted? Not their fault their father is an abuser, is it?

A tiny percentage? A quick google has just told me that in the UK, 1 in 90 pregnancies is ectopic. And a quick google again states that in 2018 there were over 700,000 live births in 2018. So that's not an insignificant number of ectopics, is it?

Another google tells me that there were over 67,000 thousand reported rapes in the year ending December 2021 and that only 1 in 100 rapes are reported. So that's over half a million rapes a year?

You might want to read this on the number of rapes that result in pregnancy in the USA: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8765248/
A quote ' rape-related pregnancy occurs with signficiant frequency'. Again, a quick google gave me that.

Abortions as a result of disability are relatively low in comparison to the total number of abortions. But the majority are carried on the basis of 'significant harm to the physical or mental health of the mother'. If you are prepared to allow a woman who has been raped to have an abortion, why is their mental health more important any any other woman's mental health? Do you not see that a mother's mental health is important in managing to bring a baby to full term and and beyond?

I think where I hit a nerve and caused a pile on is because I’m not one of the ‘all life is sacred’ crew that you lot can scoff at.
A baby created by rape? Not sacred. Get rid.
I just don’t think educated women in their 20s and 30s should be having abortions, particularly those in stable relationships, just to move up another few notches on the career ladder or to go travelling more. Get the implant, double bag him, whatever. You don’t need to be getting accidentally knocked up.

How is it OK for small children to be collateral trade off for "the right to bear arms", yet a woman can't have an abortion because "all life is precious"? America is down the pan.

This in spades

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2022 21:15

@FreyaStorm - your choices are your own. Why shouldn't other women be free to make their own choices?

Gilead · 24/06/2022 21:16

Freya, some of women have no choice about getting knocked up by their abusive husbands.

How dare women want careers or to see the world or have there own lives...

At least with the "all life is sacred types" they're consistent. You are much more blatant in wanting to punish women.

What I don't understand is if someone is anti abortion-fine, don't have one!

But why do you think that your desire to not have one should be forced on someone else?

Sadly I'm not surprised by this as I think that the fact that it was even under consideration was the "writing on the wall".

It's bad enough that it will happen in some states-but to think that they can/want to be able prosecute a woman for travelling to another state..

Because the uncomfortable truth is - you are killing a baby. End of. Let's not dress this up.

I don't agree with what's happened though but there should be more control over abortion. Obviously there should always be extenuating circumstances etc (raped child for eg) or where the physical/mental health of the mother outweigh things - but it is bloody shocking to my mind that you can simply kill a baby for no reason other than it's your body.

Where the fuck did that notion go to during handing out of covid vaccines?!

  1. Plenty of contraception about. Plenty of education about how babies are made. It's hard enough to get bloody pregnant even if you really want to. Not that difficult to avoid. (as I said, extenuating circumstances aside before anyone jumps on)
Purplefoxes · 24/06/2022 21:19

Those parts of America choosing to ban abortion are a bloody backward disgrace. I hope some of the prolifers are volunteering to take in the babies that are born and dumped as a result of this. Thought not. Perhaps when some of the red states see their own dying as a result of ectopic pregnancies and so on they may have a dawning realisation that it wasnt such a good idea. But lets be honest, if you need that abortion and have means to travel you will have to travel for it. But if you don't have the means....you could die or be very unwell, you could have an unwanted child you are forced to abandon or you have an illegal risky abortion. I wouldn't want to be forced into any of those situations, would the prolifers? Who benefits from this?! Because it certainly isn't the unwanted or life limited child who results. If this has stemmed from so called religion then religion truly is the root of all evil. I mean why don't they just go back to burning women at the stake for being witches, that's pretty much where they are at.

Why don’t you though? Why don’t you want average women in average circumstances to abort?

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 21:23

Again, 'extenuating circumstances' makes no sense. You're not against abortion if you're okay with a sexual abuse victim being allowed access to one. You're just pro-controlling the bodies of women who don't conform to your moral code.

No - most of the time you're removing an undifferentiated blob of cells.

Its bloody shocking to my mind that there are people who think a 12-week old foetus is more important than the life it’s growing in, and that bodily autonomy is less important than that. ‘Because it’s your body’ is pretty important, don’t you think? What else should we control other people’s bodies for?

They aren't really pro-life. They're pro-foetus.

Once that baby is born they don't give adamn.

RoseslnTheHospital · 24/06/2022 21:24

@CoastalWave the alternative is forcing women who don't want to, to be pregnant, give birth, care for a baby and child till adulthood. That's barbaric. And comes with serious risks to their life, physical and mental health. Because the reality is that women and girls will always experience unwanted pregnancies because no contraception is perfect, peoples lives are chaotic and not in their control, sex is not always wanted or consented to, accidents happen etc etc.

The rights of a < 10 week old foetus (in the very vast majority of uk maternal choice abortions) should not outweigh the rights of the women in question.

Fifi0102 · 24/06/2022 21:24

Shocking thank god there are still organisations that want to help , abortion pills have been invented and it's generally safe so there will be ways. Women on waves are an organisation like that.

Still waiting to find out the magic formula in making a woman who doesn’t want a baby actually give it a decent quality of life after being forced to birth it.

I think it’s a reminder to be ever vigilant about women’s rights. We can’t afford to concede even small gains. I don’t think abortion rights here will be limited/removed on the same grounds as the USA, eg religious/moral. I think it will start as a ‘disability rights’ movement, antenatal testing will be limited, and it will go from there. I hope the court of appeal uphold the high court’s decision in July, otherwise it will the UK’s first step to following the USA I feel.

I agree, it's starting with antenatal testing, we need to make sure we oppose every rollback of our rights. Obviously anyone who decides to go ahead with their pregnancy after positive antenatal testing results should get all the support they need for themselves and their child, but it should be their choice to go ahead. I get very annoyed by Sally Phillips suggesting that non-invasive prenatal testing should not be used (she even did a BBC documentary that was quite biased), it isn't her choice to make. Non-invasive prenatal testing actually prevents miscarriages by avoiding the need for amniocentesis after false positives in the combined test at 12 weeks.

FreyaStorm · 24/06/2022 21:27

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 21:04

No, indeed! Which is why you support pregnancy as a punishment for those who enjoy sex, but sloppily.

Not punishment. Just consequences.
If you see pregnancy as punishment, be watertight on your contraception.
If you don’t, enjoy your baby 😊

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 24/06/2022 21:28

The way things are going over there I honestly would not be surprised if they decriminalised marital rape, with the way they seem determined to head backwards into the dark ages...

Heck, why not bring back racial segregation while they're at it too? 🙄 Evil fuckers.

Fifi0102 · 24/06/2022 21:28

It's disgusting America doesn't give a fuck about the existing children living in poverty. I saw a woman begging on the street with a tiny baby a sign in the scorching heat. The UK isn't perfect but that wouldn't happen here.

@FreyaStorm it is a punishment if you don’t want that baby though. What’s your magical solution to transforming an unwanted foetus a wanted baby?

greywinds · 24/06/2022 21:29

I've never understood why abortion wasn't secured through legislation from the democrats years ago and had to be allowed via legal cases.

Except that democrats have never thought it was a vote winning issue to have in any manifesto clearly - I wonder if that will change?

I can't understand either how we can tell what the constitution supports or doesn't support wrt abortion or contraception since it wasn't around at the time.
