To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

In my view America can not claim moral superiority over the likes of the Taliban. A woman's body belongs to herself.

I read a comment elsewhere which convincingly makes that exact point. Outside of a few coastal areas, 80% of the land mass of the US is filled with people who are often religious extremists, view women as second class citizens, and have a general fetish for guns and violence. They literally have more in common with hardliners somewhere like Afghanistan than they do with the majority of people in countries like Denmark, Canada, France etc.

Sorry for being an average person and not an expert on what's happening in every single country in the world.

I wasn't allowed an education and I've done well to teach myself everything I know so far.

But how is it possible to not know this?

it does make me wonder about your stance.

GoldenSongbird · 24/06/2022 20:20

My only hope is that women now realise there is a concerted effort from the right and the left to remove our rights. We need to start organising and mobilising. We should not be leaving our DDs a world where they have less rights than we inherited.
The handmaidens and panderers need to step up or get out of the way. This is exactly what happens when woman is reduced to a feeling and men are reframed as the most persecuted minority.

Agree with every word. I cannot imagine having to explain to younger females in my family how my generation absolutely fucked everything up for them.

RenegadeMatron · 24/06/2022 20:47

@Brideandprejudice - if you are uneducated and ignorant of many common-knowledge things that most average people know about, you have to accept that your opinion on certain matters might not be right.

WooFighters · 24/06/2022 20:48

Do you realise that not everyone was given the same chances as you I life?

Oh thanks a lot, my irony meter just exploded.
Wish people were less sloppy with their stupidity. It's costing a fortune in repairs.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/06/2022 20:52

And as for women who are r@ped and fall pregnant, that’s not the 99.999% of abortions taking place every day, so it’s a red herring.

Why on Earth do you feel the need to censor the word"rape"? It's what happens to women and it's what can lead to unwanted pregnancy? Why the need to sanitise it? So you can feel better about you anti woman stance?

BanditoShipman · 24/06/2022 20:52

dreamingbohemian · 24/06/2022 15:48

Exactly @ChompChamp

The Republicans and their evangelical base have been plotting and organising this for 40 years. Patiently and methodically getting right-wing religious judges appointed all over the country and eventually finally the Supreme Court. Now they've won. Now they will try to ban same-sex marriage and allow states to make contraception illegal again.

Haven’t finished reading thread yet but this jumped out at me… I can see why they would move on to same sex marriage now (because they are dickheads) but contraception???? Why would they ban that?

feel sick about the result and especially that alleged rapist kavanaugh was involved!

Wouldloveanother · 24/06/2022 20:52

EmmaH2022 · 24/06/2022 20:42

But how is it possible to not know this?

It’s not about not knowing every single thing in the world, it’s about not knowing basic information around an argument you yourself are making! Do you think the women fleeing Ukraine having been made pregnant through rape by a Russian soldier, should now be forced to raise the child? Because Poland won’t offer them a termination? God I simply cannot believe anyone would say no if it were them in that position. Anyone.

RenegadeMatron · 24/06/2022 20:53

America is officially a backwater.

Interesting NYT headline that Trump - the man who shaped the current SCOTUS responsible for this decision - has privately told people repeatedly that he believes the end of Roe v Wade would be bad for Republicans.

Suburban women swung the election to Biden in 2020, and this issue is going to anger them.

For the first time ever, I hope the man is correct.

To be totally gutted for American women?
FOJN · 24/06/2022 20:53

Agree with the posters saying it's sickening how they're happy to carry guns around, and shoot away merrily, (including shooting hibernating animals!) but then are sooo 'pro life.' Couldn't make it up!

Most of the "pro lifers" also support the death penalty. It was a right wing position to oppose mask and vaccine mandates too but apparently abortion is murder and denying women bodily autonomy is fine. Sadly the right can reverse the arguments to point out the hypocrisy of the left. You're right you couldn't make this up.

ThomasinaGallico · 24/06/2022 20:54

So how does Texas differ from Saudi Arabia? In Saudi Arabia you’re not allowed to carry guns…

Emotionalsupportviper · 24/06/2022 20:55

One of the judges (Clarence Thomas) who ratified the decision also said the principle should (not even could - should) be used to control access to contraception, get rid of same-sex marriage, and destroy "privacy in the bedroom" (effectively if a couple - even a married couple - have sex - even consensual sex - in anything other that the missionary position and this somehow becomes known, then they can be prosecuted for it).

A small ray of sunshine seems to be that a further judge (sorry - can't find his name) says he intends to challenge the decision.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 20:57

I wasn't allowed an education and I've done well to teach myself everything I know so far

I'm truly sorry to hear that, Bride; it must have been incredibly difficult, and all credit to you for pushing ahead on your own account

Gently though, I do wonder if with such a background you're in a good position to comment on something as involved as this? Hopefully nobody would deny you your own choices, but might suggesting what others should do be a step too far?

The sex position thing… what! I had a (cursory) Google search and couldn’t find anything?

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 21:00

Interesting that Clarence Thomas didn't mention Loving (which legalised inter- racial marriage). As he's in an inter-racial marriage himself. It's only the gays and harlots that he's got his beady eyes aimed on next. Nothing that would upset his life. Loathsome toad.

Cameleongirl · 24/06/2022 15:51

The contraception issue also makes me so angry, @dreamingbohemian . Surely easy access to conception =fewer unplanned pregnancies=less need for abortions.

They should be throwing free contraception at people in order to prevent unplanned pregnancies. It’s so illogical. 😡

It's not really illogical though, is it? If you want to keep women out of positions of power, endebted to men, forced to stay in marriages / relationships (because they have no other means of accessing financial support) etc., etc., what better way than saddling them with unwanted pregnancies and children? We're less of a threat when we're chained to the sink, barefoot and pregnant.

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 20:35

Sloppiness through enjoying sex?

Indeed. No need to create and then snuff out a life when I’m just getting my leg over, when there are so many contraception options.

No, indeed! Which is why you support pregnancy as a punishment for those who enjoy sex, but sloppily.

I imagine this is a reference to wanting to overturn Lawrence v Texas, a Supreme Court decision that meant states could no longer ban sodomy

Yes there were actual laws banning sodomy. Until 2003.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 24/06/2022 21:05

Michelle Obama. Nailed it.

And so did your other half.

Cartoonmom · 24/06/2022 21:06

@Pumperthepumper - got it, thank you for explaining.

"Indeed. No need to create and then snuff out a life when I’m just getting my leg over, when there are so many contraception options."

Freya - your choices are just that, yours. Other women should be free to make their own minds up.

Sod's law says I can't find it again now - I'll keep looking. I read it a couple of hours ago (in relation to Judge Thomas' comments) but things on Twitter move on so fast and it's disappeared from timeline.

Lifeismeh · 24/06/2022 21:07

It worries me for what decisions will be made for women next. Where is the line? Where does it stop?

my heart hurts for friends there, and all women.
