To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

Did you know rape is used as a weapon full stop?

it’s not about sex, it’s about power and control.

yes it’s a fucking weapon. If you know rape exists, you must know it’s used as a weapon.

or did you think it’s just poor men getting sexually frustrated?

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2022 20:16

In my view America can not claim moral superiority over the likes of the Taliban.

A woman's body belongs to herself.

RedLemonade · 24/06/2022 20:16

This is so heartbreaking.

I had to travel to the UK for a termination not so long ago when abortion was totally banned in Ireland. Thankfully I had support and could afford it, but I remember being so moved to learn of the Abortion Support Network based in London that helped Irish women who couldn’t afford it to travel to the UK and get a safe, legal abortion- often staying in the house of one of the amazing volunteers.

I cried the day it the 8th amendment was repealed here, so glad that there was no longer a need for that brilliant and brave service. As it happens, the outcome in Ireland still has a way to go but much had been gained at least.

It’s devastating to think that such networks will now need to materialise in the US and more wonderful, devoted women will need to help their desperate sisters in other states. I have no doubt this will happen, but what a tragedy that it should have come to this.

Solidarity and strength to all women in the US for whom this is such a dark day.

Freya, 98% of abortions are before 12 weeks. I have provided a picture of eight week cells. 12 weeks is not significantly larger.

12 weeks is to me. 8 weeks may be a bundle of cells but my US scan photo of my little bean at 12 weeks is very much a baby to me. Hence my personal view of a cut off at 8 weeks.

So report me. I am not British either. Read the paper once in a while.

Who said I wasn't British? I am British and I read the news daily.

You know what, calling me stupid is just pathetic and offensive. Do you realise that not everyone was given the same chances as you I life? I'd love to be really highly educated but I my culture didn't allow it and that shouldn't mean I'm not allowed to have an opinion.

I have always said that anyone has the right to their own opinion, any opinion at all. But that opinion has to come from proper research, education and looking at both sides of the argument before reaching a conclusion. And you have to be able to back up your opinion when challenged. Otherwise it's just meaningless words isn't it?

You can't just say any old shit and then back it up with 'well that's my opinion'. Well, you can I guess, but you can't expect anyone to respect it.

Brideandprejudice · 24/06/2022 20:16

Don't believe it then. I didn't even know what a politician was until I was nearly 20. Not everyone has the same upbringing you know.

No, I know. Some are forced to give birth to a baby they don’t want, for example.

HogDogKetchup · 24/06/2022 20:18

OP I’m not sure I agree with abortion but definitely think it has a place.

I had an ectopic pregnancy and never considered it an abortion but know this is included in the legislation. I cannot imagine being left to bleed out and my children being left without a mother if the same thing happened again. Heartbreaking.

Toomuchred · 24/06/2022 20:19

Why?

GoldenSongbird · 24/06/2022 20:20

My only hope is that women now realise there is a concerted effort from the right and the left to remove our rights. We need to start organising and mobilising. We should not be leaving our DDs a world where they have less rights than we inherited.
The handmaidens and panderers need to step up or get out of the way. This is exactly what happens when woman is reduced to a feeling and men are reframed as the most persecuted minority.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 24/06/2022 20:25

Thank you for that excellent link, Anoooshka - I wasn't aware (though I should have known) that pro-lifers also opposed the Obamacare mandate improving access to contraception

From that perspective their stance would seem even more worrying, since contraception's an obvious and very major tool in preventing abortion

It’s hard to do anything about the laws of other countries but if a charity was started to provide abortion care elsewhere for the affected women I would support it/donate.

our next focus in the U.K. is the judgement on 13th July which seems to be little known about.

RiojaRose · 24/06/2022 20:29

I am so fucking angry and upset. It’s devastating. I’m investigating how to support organisations that help women access abortion, because this decision is absolutely sickening.

Athenajm80 · 24/06/2022 20:30

I read a book recently where abortion was illegal. A lawyer in an abortion clinic was arrested and sent to prison, a mother had a miscarriage but was accused of terminating the pregnancy and was put in prison. A doctor in the prison was fired for helping women. I thought it was horrific but dystopian fiction. It really isn't anymore.

Hands up, who learnt that rape is used as a weapon of war in school? Or like me did you learn about it from reading books, reading/watching the news and maybe even via the internet?

whynotwhatknot · 24/06/2022 20:33

its just so sickening all this-theyre so backwards its not even funny

here have a gun shoot people dead but dont forget pro life!

FreyaStorm · 24/06/2022 20:33

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 20:00

And what about how to take the contraceptive pill, or where to get an implant fitted? Or how you can access the morning after pill?

Yep, all of that too.
Had I fallen pregnant it would not have been through ignorance. Just sloppiness.

Squiff70 · 24/06/2022 20:34

Brideandprejudice · 24/06/2022 20:11

Also, you didn't know that rape was used as a weapon of war?

No, I didn't. Is that a crime? Do you know everything about everything?

Fucks sake. Haven't you seen, read or heard the news since Russia started attacking Ukraine? Russian soldiers have been raping - and threatening to rape - innocent women and children in Ukraine, just because they can. This is NOT new or unique to this particular war either. Either you're a troll or so unbelievably pig-ignorant that you really shouldn't be giving your opinion on such emotive topics. You're allowed an opinion of course (as we all are), however you claim to have educated yourself well but things like this, which are entirely relevant to this discussion, appear to have completely escaped your notice.

Cartoonmom · 24/06/2022 20:35

Can you explain how the left is taking away our rights?

Cartoonmom · 24/06/2022 20:35

Can you explain how the left is taking away our rights?

It’s a trans argument. If biology can be ignored in favour of feelings, the definition of what ‘women’s healthcare’ is becomes really loose. It’s a bit off topic but a lot of people feel the left are too relaxed about legal definitions of women and therefore that will cause problems as it does with say, women’s sports.

PurpleButterflyWings · 24/06/2022 20:40

I have been discussing this today with friends and family and colleagues, and whether they're left or right wing, or somewhere in the middle, or young or old, or somewhere in the middle, we are all unanimous on one thing...

America is the worst country to live in, in the 'free world.'

As has been said, it's going backwards there not forwards. And there are SOOO many negatives to living there. Zero healthcare, no/little maternity leave, poor womens rights, poor pay, extortionate fees for education, few rights for workers, people of colour treated like crap, guns freely available as easily as sweets, and now THIS shit. Everytime the UK gets on your nerves and you feel pissed off with it, and things seem tough, just be thankful for one thing... you don't live in America.

I seriously cannot believe this abortion ban shit is happening in 2022. This is medieval bullshit. It's sick, it's twisted, and it's like some horrible fucking dystopian nightmare. I feel so much for America women right now. What a dreadful place to live.

Agree with the posters saying it's sickening how they're happy to carry guns around, and shoot away merrily, (including shooting hibernating animals!) but then are sooo 'pro life.' Couldn't make it up!

Notonthestairs · 24/06/2022 20:40

"Had I fallen pregnant it would not have been through ignorance. Just sloppiness."

You are free to decide what is right for your body & your family. You should not be free to dictate to others what they choose to do with theirs.
