To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

So, just to be clear, you think that in a situation where a woman is raped as a weapon of war, that woman should not be allowed to legally access an abortion?

Wow....

First of all I didn't even know that was a thing that happened. Second of all it would be Very hypocritical of me to say that I believe life begins at conception and then to choose instances where taking that like was okay.

Why does abortion need to be the answer to everything? Surely the issue that needs our help is the horrific rape taking place.

America is falling apart at the seams. I don't think it will be a country in 20 years time. It will have broken up into 2 or more separate countries.

I actually hope so. In the absence of huge reforms (that will not happen), it’s probably the best thing that could happen.

Supersee · 24/06/2022 20:08

I was sent this, from earlier this year. I hadn't realised the implications for IVF and the coil, an informative if terrifying watch.

Yes abortion for rape is a tricky one, because it should be allowed imo, but then proving it times out while the foetus grows.
I’m in favour of abortion for rape victims, of course.
We’d just have to take women’s word for it, so it probably wouldn’t decrease the number of abortions very much, but it may make women think about it more. Perhaps only have one abortion in a lifetime, rather than a few, like a girl I knew who had 3 by age 18.

Yeah that girl must just have been feckless and lazy, doubt there was anything more serious going on there...

So what you are saying is, you don't have an answer to that, because you're argument doesn't stand up.

Yeah, it would be great if men stopped raping us wouldn't it? Fucking take it up with them.

Also, you didn't know that rape was used as a weapon of war? Confused

That’s not an answer to that question though. Not to mention how you square the circle of the life being worth less depending on the method in which it was conceived. If you took women’s word for it, the numbers of abortions would absolutely skyrocket. If that was the only way to be granted a safe, legal abortion, rape accusations would hit the roof. You’re not making any logical sense.

Sorry for being an average person and not an expert on what's happening in every single country in the world.

I wasn't allowed an education and I've done well to teach myself everything I know so far.

Meanwhile, in the real world…..

Women and girls will continue to be raped. Girls as young as 5 have given birth. You are delighted that raped children will be forced to give birth.

JanisMoplin · 24/06/2022 20:11

Rape is used as a weapon of war across the world. They did try to stop the unreasonable men from raping women so the sweet little fetuses could be saved but little things like genocide, colonialism and civil war got in the way.

Yes, I engaged. My self control deserted me. If you don't know that rape is used as a weapon of war you are too stupid to engage in this discussion. Report me.

Brideandprejudice · 24/06/2022 20:11

You may have been the minority, but you’re not insignificant should have been able to have an abortion. I am very sorry for what you went through.

It’s the non-rape, non-incest, non-fetal abnormalities, non-ectopic pregnancy abortion statistics that I find depressing.

i may be one of a very small minority but I was raped and fell pregnant as a young teen in the 1960s. I was dragged into a lock up while I was walking the dog in the early evening.

My mother and grandmother arranged a ‘back street’ abortion as that was all that was available. It was horrific and due to that I ended up with internal damage which left me unable to have children. If I had been able to have a safe, legal abortion my life could have been so different.

If I had been forced to carry that child I would have killed myself.

The rapist, of course, walked away and got on with his vile life.

I would not condemn one single female to go through what I did and end up with a ruined life like mine.

To you I may be part of an insignificant minority but it doesn’t feel like that to me.

You may have been the minority, but you’re not insignificant and you should have been able to have an abortion. I am very sorry for what you went through.

So you do think that a foetus conceived from rape has less value than a foetus conceived of consensual sex? Why should the foetus have to pay for being conceived from rape, that's not it's fault?

You know what, calling me stupid is just pathetic and offensive. Do you realise that not everyone was given the same chances as you I life? I'd love to be really highly educated but I my culture didn't allow it and that shouldn't mean I'm not allowed to have an opinion.

@FreyaStorm you keep mentioning stats and statistics. Link please? (Again).

Supersee · 24/06/2022 20:15

@Brideandprejudice What about children? You still haven't answered that.

howtomoveforwards · 24/06/2022 20:15

No I don’t, they should be able to have abortions in those cases. My issue is that those cases are so rare, a tiny percentage of the total number taking place. Same for ectopic pregnancies, severe disabilities, etc

I thought all life was sacred? Why abort the babies of abusers or rapists? If it's about the baby, surely they haven't done anything to deserve being aborted? Not their fault their father is an abuser, is it?

A tiny percentage? A quick google has just told me that in the UK, 1 in 90 pregnancies is ectopic. And a quick google again states that in 2018 there were over 700,000 live births in 2018. So that's not an insignificant number of ectopics, is it?

Another google tells me that there were over 67,000 thousand reported rapes in the year ending December 2021 and that only 1 in 100 rapes are reported. So that's over half a million rapes a year?

You might want to read this on the number of rapes that result in pregnancy in the USA: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8765248/
A quote ' rape-related pregnancy occurs with signficiant frequency'. Again, a quick google gave me that.

Abortions as a result of disability are relatively low in comparison to the total number of abortions. But the majority are carried on the basis of 'significant harm to the physical or mental health of the mother'. If you are prepared to allow a woman who has been raped to have an abortion, why is their mental health more important any any other woman's mental health? Do you not see that a mother's mental health is important in managing to bring a baby to full term and and beyond?

Your right not everyone is given the same chances in life. Some people for example are raped and impregnated as children. But that pales in comparison to being called stupid.

Don't believe it then. I didn't even know what a politician was until I was nearly 20. Not everyone has the same upbringing you know.
