To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

My mother was desperate to abort me. As a result, I am strongly pro-choice.

My mother shouldn't have been sacrificed on the alter of her doctor's religious beliefs.

I wouldn't have known if I'd been aborted.

I strongly believe a baby has a RIGHT to be born to a loving family that wants it, that prioritises its wellbeing, that can provide for it, physically, emotionally, and materially.

Really interesting perspective @mbosnz . Thank you for sharing.

Disgusted with this decision. A women should ALWAYS have the right to choose an abortion.
In America they will back to the hilt the rights for people (usually men) to kill with guns but not for a women to have agency over her own body. They are not pro-life. They are pro-controlling women.

They are not pro-babies and children. If they were they'd enable better access to free health care, free education and make sure they couldn't be shot dead in their classrooms. They are pro-controlling women.

Ending safe access to abortions puts women at risk, both physically and financially. America is going backwards and it's shocking. I could weep for the women there. Women's sports are being destroyed, women's access to single sex spaces ditto. And now they are being forced to go through with pregnancies against their will.

This, exactly. The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
We must never, ever relax on protecting our hard won rights; a moment's taking them for granted, which we should be able to do, and we go back decades.

Wouldloveanother · 24/06/2022 19:06

@Brideandprejudice im willing to engage with you respectfully as I know many people who hold your views, and feel i ‘understand’ your position (even if I completely disagree with it).

let’s say all these babies are born. There will be a huge increase in teen mums, kids in poverty, very disabled children, neglected children, children placed in care, children whose dads are rapists… the list goes on.

  1. are you happy to pay a significant tax rise to support these children and (as much as possible) spare them a life of misery?
  2. would you be willing to adopt such children yourself? As in next year when the first cohort of babies are born?
  3. what would you do to penalise men for abandoning their children? Or wouldn’t you? How would you make them responsible for their part in fathering kids?
  4. would you be happy for your pregnant daughter to be denied abortion with a ruptured ectopic, as she bleeds out?

One step closer to Gilead.

outshinethemorningsun · 24/06/2022 19:08

Hopefully they are planning some way for men to be held more accountable in cases of unplanned pregnancies

Cartoonmom · 24/06/2022 19:08

All the other Americans on this thread celebrating this decision as protecting life, do you really think the Republicans in Congress(and their court appointees) really give a shit about life? Why the poverty, gun violence, no universal access to health care, death penalty and over incarceration if life is so sacred in America?

They don't care about life. They care about upholding their white supremacist patriarchy. The origins of regulating abortion in this country had nothing to do with morality. They had everything to do with sexism and racism though.

It’s a real shame that we don’t have a wide array of contraceptives available.

Oh wait.

And as for women who are r@ped and fall pregnant, that’s not the 99.999% of abortions taking place every day, so it’s a red herring.

Pro punishment then? Or forced vasectomies?

Ha! Chance would be a fine thing!

It is only the "feckless women" Hmm who will have to pay the price. As always.

Yes, let’s have forced vasectomies! For every man, and they can pay to reverse it privately if they want kids. Because if they can’t afford that then they can’t afford a child, right?

So would you have a different rule for women who have been raped, then? Or would you just tell them to suck it up because they're statistically insignificant?Hmm

How do you know? Where are you quoting this from the reasons that women have abortions?

No one has the right to tell women what they do with their bodies. No one.

Wouldloveanother · 24/06/2022 19:14

If you truly believe that life begins at conception and abortion is morally indefensible, then that should stand regardless of how the fetus was created. The fact that so many people say ‘apart from in cases of rape or incest’ proves this isn’t about ‘valuing life’, it’s about punishing women for what they deem as ‘immoral behaviour’. Anyway, how the hell would ‘except rape’ work? A criminal trial before the abortion can take place? Trials take months to come to court, so you would be aborting a very advanced 8 month pregnancy when it could have been terminated very early on. So counter productive.

howtomoveforwards · 24/06/2022 19:15

The rate of abortions will not decrease

I'm not sure that's true. There will be women who can't manage to get an abortion of the back street variety either because of finances or lack of contacts. There will be others unable to travel out of state, again due to finances. There will be more babies born which will justify, in some people's minds at least, this court ruling.

Those same people will ignore the number of babies born in less than suitable circumstances, the toll that takes on both mother and child's mental health both short and long term, the increase in funding needed for the number of children who end up in foster care, the illness that results in women because of the back street abortions, increased suicide rates in women forced to carry babies they don't want, and ultimately the increased death rate as a result of botched back street abortions. All women that will be impacted and very few children who will be better off as a result. I can't imagine there are many men who will be looking after these unwanted children or giving two hoots about the women who die.

I think a woman should be able to have an abortion no matter the situation in which she fell pregnant. Whether the sex was forced or fun. Her body, her choice.

Absolutely!!!!! @Wouldloveanother

would you also @Brideandprejudice :

  1. Support changes to the law that will serve harsher sentences on those who rape and rapes that lead to pregnancy? Would you support the death penalty for such a crime?
  2. Support a change to the law holding men accountable for at least 50% of the medical costs associated with birth and any birthing injuries.
outshinethemorningsun · 24/06/2022 19:15

also seeing it pointed out America has shitty maternity leave, no universal healthcare and high rates of maternal mortality for a developed country (particularly for black women)

Pumperthepumper · 24/06/2022 19:10

Either is fine with me.

Make a few examples and (some) people would soon start taking from responsibility, rather than using abortion AS contraceptive.

Ever seen the brutal reality of a medical abortion? It should be more widely publicised (perhaps in schools). Might work better at lowering abortion rates than an actual legal ban 🤷🏽‍♀️
