To be totally gutted for American women?

Anothernamechangeplease · 24/06/2022 15:19

The US Supreme Court has reversed the Roe v Wade ruling. Millions of American women have lost their right to make decisions about what happens to their own bodies. Sad

I have never had an abortion and personally, I'm not sure if I ever could, but I have always been passionately of the view that individual women should be able to make that choice for themselves. It's awful that this right has been removed for so many.

My thoughts on abortion have become a lot more nuanced since all this in America has brought it to the forefront. Ultimately, I still believe a women should have the choice - of course she should. However, when you look at the abortion numbers - in the U.K. as well as the US. It is utterly sickening, horrifying, stomach-churning. So so many. It cannot be denied people have become too blasé about it. I personally have three friends/acquaintances (that I know of) who have had abortions when they are already happily married, well off (not rich but certainly comfortable), in their 30s, good health etc. They just already had all the children they wanted and didn’t fancy having another. I was outwardly supported but I did feel shocked deep down. All the stuff about the foetus not being a baby, just a bundle of cells etc is untrue - that is a person and they can feel pain and fear and their life is being ended. Sometimes this is unfortunately necessary and women need to be able to choose but we’ve lost our way culturally, lost our reverence and respect for babies and the fact that it’s seen as no big deal is wrong.

Why did you outwardly support? Cowardly arent you?. Your friends deserve to know what a sanctimonious two faced misogynist you are.

BruceAndNosh · 24/06/2022 18:16

Fucking Trump.
He couldn't give a toss about abortion but he stuffed the Supreme Court with conservatives to suit his own interests

RevoltingHumanHead · 24/06/2022 18:16

The current shower in government are currently trying to extricate the country from the EHRC and to bring in some half-baked Bill of Rights instead. I was thinking that I wouldn't be surprised if some of the head-banger factions in the Tory party (they're not in short supply these days) attempted to bring the death penalty back to the UK given the chance.

I wouldn't get too complacent about women's rights in the UK.

‘Absolutely raging on behalf of women in America’

Rage on behalf of American women but don’t think it can’t happen here. Maybe not as extreme but more limits at least. With the economic meltdown about your kick off, even though this was caused by right wing populists, there are people who believe the solution is to vote for even further right wingers.

Tg we have separation of judiciary and state at least

it’s hard to watch how impacted the judiciary is

And fuck all the women who will suffer and die as a result if this, right?

‘It will never get through Parliament’

the refrain of the naive at the moment…

Stop scaremongering. Westminster and Holyrood have just just ruled on keeping telemedication for abortion.

‘As the PP said, in the UK it is typically left leaning women who are fighting to retain the legal distinction between the sex and therefore our sex based rights.

If "men" can get pregnant then how is abortion a woman's rights issue? You can no longer argue that restricting abortion disadvantages women only. We all know it's an issue which only affects females but how do you make that argument without legal recognition of sex. It's really frightening how people cannot see where all this is heading.

For anyone who thinks this is not coming our way you need to wake up.’

Look, there are nuances here. I 100% am not saying trans is not an issue. Be it in sports or other contexts. I do believe a minority of predators will use trans rights as a way to harm women. Predators will use any ‘in’ they can. I also believe some of the TRAs on Twitter etc genuinely hate women and wish us ill.

However, in the wider context they are also on the extreme of the MRA flank and there aren’t many of them with power. We must fight the immediate threat firsts, the ones with the power. We need to see the bigger picture. Saying ‘I will vote for powerful men, who actually have the track record in, and have the power today, to harm women’ in order to prevent some screaming men on Twitter from calling themselves women’ is fucking stupid.

Women of colour like myself (mixed race) who are usually the frontline women to feel the impact of anti women policies feel let down by women, who are often white, voting for right wing governments based on the single issue of trans incursions into women spaces. We are usually the first to feel economic and other hardships.

Focus on the people with power for now and when they are dealt with we can focus on those who wish us harm who have less power to fuck us over. Women of colour are the canary in the coal mine.

Now look where we all are.

I understand all that you have written but you are still missing the point. You have no sex based rights if there is no legal recognition of your sex. You cannot argue that an abortion ban discriminates against women whilst erasing the relevance of sex in pregnancy by referring to pregnant people. I absolutely agree this will disproportionately affect women of colour rather than people of colour. I think the left have played into the rights hands on this issue.

America is heading down a very dangerous path. I'm worried for the women who can't access safe abortions and all the women of reproductive age who have now had their bodily autonomy removed.

Looking at all the news stories, I think what has shocked me most is how many women I can see enthusiastically cheering for their oppression.

It’s horrible. Feel quite sick about it. I am against late term abortions unless it’s detrimental to the health of the mother - it’s not always black or white but I’m pro-choice when it comes to your body. Just like the covid vaccination.

Naunet · 24/06/2022 18:22

From the country that still allows child marriage in some states. Shameful.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/06/2022 18:22

How quickly women's rights can be removed. Dreadful.

onthefencesitter · 24/06/2022 18:23

Lots of American women online (who don't want children at the moment) planning tubal ligation. They think access to contraception might be next.

I don't blame them...

notasillysausage · 24/06/2022 18:23

Yesterday, we were diminished to “womb carriers”. Today, one of the so called developed countries of this world makes abortion illegal. I am so sick of this backwards world and it’s treatment of women.

It amazes me women can support the loss of womens rights.

dadadeedadada · 24/06/2022 18:24

These are the same people who point at the Middle East and talk about their draconian anti women laws. These are the same people who argue passionately to preserve their right to bare arms even when those guns are used to take the life of children. If I was in that country I would immediately stop having sex, even if I was married, there are literally no failsafe contraception methods other than abstinence. And that is exactly what those women should do, abstain.
How many women are going to die having backstreet abortions? How many babies are going to go for adoption? If their not careful American people are going to end up in a situation like Romania.
And, as an afterthought, I have just heard some woman over there on the radio 'yay! It's about time, the right to life should be from the moment of conception!' Yeh, tell that to the parents of the children who were murdered at school.

The Handmaid's Tale is on its way to becoming a reality ... devastating news

Pippinbird · 24/06/2022 18:25

What PP have said, that it could happen here in the UK is so true.

Our political viewpoints on certain issues are now markers for others to judge us by. It’s no longer good enough to be polite and a law abiding citizen. Your value is based on your politics.

Voting in my first election yonks ago, I was astounded that my parents didn’t tell me who they voted for. I was open and told them in my excitement. I just couldn’t understand. Because they were from a generation where a vote is something sacred. Now I knew their politics, we discussed it every night with the news. But they were protecting themselves and OTHERS from judgement. They were facilitating a civil society. That attitude now seems lost.

People are now expected to not only have a viewpoint on certain issues but fall clearly on one side or the other. These are ordinary people who may not care much about the particular issue but will nonetheless are now forced to have one.

*Brexit
*Immigration
*Scottish Independence
*Trans rights/ Women’s rights

And I fear abortion will now be added to this list.

Florenz · 24/06/2022 18:25

I think this will lead to a long period of Democrat rule as a lot of people who vote Republican on fiscal grounds will be horrified by this.

Utilityroomenvy · 24/06/2022 18:27

I am absolutely devastated for women who are having their rights eroded. Abortion is controversial for some, yes. But it is a CHOICE and if someone chooses to abort, for whatever reason, they should not be vilified for it.

I had an abortion at 20 due to contraceptive failure. I was emotionally and financially unstable at the time. I went to the GP and told them I could not go through the pregnancy. I was encouraged to keep the child and claim benefits or consider adoption. Neither option was suitable for me at the time so I chose to abort. I have never regretted that decision. I found work, a career and got my life together. Went on to marry and have two children. I’m not sure where my life would be now if I had chosen to continue the pregnancy but I don’t think I would be where I am now.

I'm American, although I live in the UK (thank god) I can't decide whether to cry or scream. It's so fucking enraging.

If I was back home I'd be going to the barricades, I don't know what I can do from here.

The Democrats need to fucking get off their asses and do something about this fascist court.

The Democrats have allowed this to happen by letting identity politics dominate the left. The Left is hopelessly lost, and neither cares about women's rights (men in dresses more precious) or the welfare of children (let them get that double mastectomy). Left and Right are lost. But the Right will ensure the USA becomes a theocracy. It has the guns, after all.

Yes. Some of us have feared this for years. Look at how aggressive Britain is becoming, as both the government promote aggressive exploitation of others, and popular culture forces American gangsta aggression down the throats of males. All result in males being told to seek status by jumping on top of and being aggressive to those perceived as weaker, who are at the same time made to become weaker by removal of rights.

Women and girls in Britain need to be very aware that this could happen here, and probably will as Britain always follows Americas lead like an obedient little lapdog.

Okaaaay · 24/06/2022 18:30

It’s disgusting, frightening and like something of another era long ago. I won’t be travelling to the US again until this decision has been reversed. Totally agree that this is about patriarchal control and politics, not about the rights of babies and children.
